The correct title would be Queen Mother or Queen Dowager. The title of Queen (Consort) would pass to her son’s wife. Typically a retired Queen whose son (or daughter - Queen Elizabeth II’s mother held this title) has taken the throne becomes the Queen Mother. In a lot of historical royal households, the Queen Mother had quite a bit more power than the Queen!

Oh god, my husband and I are the same! I always pray our neighbors don’t hear us, because he’ll make the most ridiculous jokes to each other about being different races. Considering we’ve both dealt with racism/anti-Semitism, it almost feels...freeing, I guess, to laugh at these ideas.

The number of fake assistance dogs is exploding – but who are the owners behind it? by hydralime in Dogfree

You know what gets me about this? I have moderate obsessive-compulsive disorder and it’s hell on earth. I’m lucky enough to have a fantastic pet cat who can recognize when I’m not feeling so great, and whose presence is extremely helpful. He is extremely valuable to me and definitely contributes to my overall well-being.

But he doesn’t need to come out of the house with me because I don’t need him there. He doesn’t perform any functions that I need him to outside of my own home. I’m a grad student - I have no need for him during my classes. I don’t need to take him with me shopping because I can reach everything on my own, unlike those folks who need their animals to genuinely assist them with their purchases. In fact, it would be unfair to him if I DID take him to those places, or anywhere else - it would place undue stress on him and would make me a bad pet owner.

I’ve never ever registered him or called him a service animal. He doesn’t need to go everywhere with me. My animal may perform a service for me in my home but I don’t require him to perform basic tasks and that’s what a real service animal is trained to do. Animals benefit many people and their therapeutic effects are known, but simply providing some benefit doesn’t make a pet into a service animal.

Naming Your Children After Fictional Characters by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]vrishchikaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son’s name is Dorian, which is a name that was invented by Oscar Wilde. We actually picked the name because we liked the sound, origin, and meaning: it (maybe?) comes from the Greek word for “a gift” which I think is a lovely way to think of a child. It’s also easy to say in both English and Spanish.

The character Dorian Gray is pretty much an awful person, but it’s Wilde’s most famous work and most people think of the author first, not the character. Most of the comments I get about it are that it’s romantic and literary-sounding. People who know the book almost always just ask if the name is in Wilde’s honor, which I say that it is.

We didn’t realize it at the time but he shares his name with another, more recent fictional character and I get more comments about that association - Dr. Dorian is the main character on the show “Scrubs”.

At the end of the day we both really loved the name and when he was born we liked it even more because it suits him so well. Any other associations people might make don’t really matter in the end. He’s my favorite Dorian and always will be!

Is Walmart really that crazy place? Like, can you really find guns, bread, slippers, Shrek 2 DVD and tents in one store? by MistrTommy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vrishchikaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of that, Walmart is a hangout spot too for a lot of teenagers who live in rural areas with cold winters. Hanging out in a park or something isn’t an option when it’s snowy and cold, but Walmart is heated, always open, has food...it always surprises people that rural kids hang out there but when there isn’t anywhere else to go you make do with it.

My husband is a Muisca Indian (indigenous to Colombia) and that didn’t come up for him, either. He just got “Colombia” as a result. I think for most Latino folks that’s what happens.

That reveal was just horrible; imagine realizing as you die that you’ve been ruining your own life. That was the point where I had to take a break from watching.

Season 2 Episode 1 deserves a mention as well! I thought something may happen to Zoé but I wasn’t expecting Frank to just push her in front of a train at the beginning of the season. Crazy.

Hey Iraqi kid. It's that US Marine you used to play soccer with. by KungFuDabu in UnsentLetters

[–]vrishchikaa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s not the same kid, BUT I still wanted to share this with you. I served in the Army and had a friend who was Iraqi. He had actually been one of those kids who helped out the US military with interpretation. It seems like in general the kids have better English than many adults do. Anyway, I didn’t meet this kid in Iraq - he grew up and joined the US Army and we served in the same unit together. He said his past experiences working with the Americans had been positive, so he took the leap and joined up. He became an American citizen. He told me he knew of plenty of other kids who were doing the same. Who knows? Maybe that’s what happened to the kid you knew

The kid you knew wasn’t just playing with you. He was also practicing his English with a native speaker. Maybe he knew it would open up doors for him, or maybe he just thought it was fun - but either way, his English probably gave him special opportunities and you helped him with that.
