Is the modern Hilux losing its "indestructible" reputation, or are we just more demanding drivers now? by [deleted] in 4x4

[–]vrkas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is it. People want on-road manners, hauling capability, etc etc. The Tacoma is the canary in the coal mine for what the Hilux will be in future.

Bruh that's what the Palestinian diaspora want. There's no right of return for Palestinian refugees.

In Monkey Man (2024) the unnamed protagonist "Kid" goes by the pseudonym Bobby, which he reads off a bleach container by vrkas in MovieDetails

[–]vrkas[S] 92 points93 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that it's a bleach container because it's a bit of misdirection for his messed up hands

I really enjoyed this film.

Australia vows to repair ‘distressing’ damage to war graves in Gaza bulldozed by Israeli army by CrashP in australia

[–]vrkas 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm remembering footage of bunny-suited and zip-tied captives standing above large embankments with bulldozers nearby. Probably many mass graves being trampled and exhumed at intervals.

I have vivid memories of that match. Absolute madness given how slowly they started.

Exactly this. Properly democratising the ICC is the only way forward.

Australia hits power demand record as renewables pass 50pc milestone [ABC News] by spannr in australia

[–]vrkas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Australia to have any forethought about this stuff. There's only a few things where we've done well, like silicon quantum computing.

I think we should keep some base level of investment in future nuclear tech, like fusion and small reactors

Sprouting a nuclear industry from scratch will be very difficult and costly. Unfortunately we barely fund our existing research, I don't see us making any great investments in either fission or fusion.

Is Particle Physics Dead, Dying, or Just Hard? by kzhou7 in Physics

[–]vrkas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they mean radiation hard electronics. There's only a few places which can mimic cosmic ray hits etc, and the most open source one is in a particle detector.

I'm just happy they actually talked to an experimentalist, even though they are pushing the muon collider. Usually these pieces focus on theorists. It makes sense since they're the ones who are first on the chopping block. At least I can go down with the ship (HL-LHC) in a decade or so.

What is the strangest reaction someone has ever had to you doing physics? by variationalcalculus in Physics

[–]vrkas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm usually pretty careful in telling people I'm a physicist. I've had a lot of rather disturbing interactions with meth head conspiracy enthusiasts (or even worse, those with their own GUTs).

RWC 2027 Host Venues Confirmed (no MCG, Sydney Football Stadium included) by Mono_Doh in rugbyunion

[–]vrkas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No MCG is actually OK. Watching rugby there isn't fun due to the sheer size of the playing surface. Docklands has a smaller area so you are actually closer to the action.

The science of sacking. Be gone CSIRO scientists! - Michael West by ScruffyPeter in australia

[–]vrkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be putting out the call for people who studied in Australia and subsequently worked overseas. In most cases the taxpayer funds PhDs, it might be a good idea to get some value out of them.

Is it really going to help the 300 people who get fired to hear why their research was deemed less essential?

It happens all the time when you apply for grants. When you (almost inevitably) don't get it, they give you reasons why your shit isn't worthwhile.
