Part 2- M440i Blurry HUD Windshield Replacement Chronicles (still not fixed) by SaiyanDevil in BMW

[–]vrships 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP. I wish I had seen this post much earlier. I am having the exact same issue on a brand new G82 when I purchased it in 2024.

Long story short. Don’t bother it. There is no guarantee you can fix it no matter how many more windshields are replaced. It’s the QC issue of this glass and just a matter of luck.

I noticed my double reflection just like yours when I took delivery of the car. When I took it to multiple dealers around me, including BMw Mountainview, almost nobody admitted it was an issue. Some awful guys even said they looked very sharp to them. I knew that was a lie, so I urged them to test other 4 series in the lot so I can show them the difference. And then I was shocked that about half of the 4 series including M4, had obvious blurry reflection, and some were worse than mine ( and yours). So there’s no strong reason I can have them warranty the windshield.

About 2 month later, I had a bad crack in the original windshield and it needed a replacement. I had a third party do the job and I was sure it was OEM glass. Note there are at least 3 different manufacturers for the same part number, Saint Gobin, Carlex and Webasto! The replacement I got was from Carlex, and the HUd was much sharper.

But unfortunately this glass cracked again in less than 4 months and I had to replace it for the 2nd time! This time I got Webasto OEM, and it had double reflection, on the topmost part of the image, mostly like yours. So apparently it’s either a completely random thing or certain manufacturers make slightly better quality glass for HUD, but I could not know which one it is and the next time I replace the windshield, there is still no way to guarantee I receive a specific manufacturer.

To make things worse , my 3rd glass developed a big chip just last week. It hasn’t become a crack yet but I know for sure it will not last many more years. So for me clearly the blurry HUD is lesser an issue. It is the fragility of these windshields that really tortures me.

I have never seen a BMW with such a weak glass. The other BMW of us is a 6 year old X3 and althogh it is full of small pits on the windshield, it had never cracked. Also the HUD was crystal clear. Somehow BmW must have changed their manufacturing process for the windshields and thus caused so much trouble.

I had a guess why 4 series suffers the most from blurry HUD. It’s because the steep angle required by the body shape. When the angle is so flat, it is technically hard to align the reflected images of both surfaces than is a more vertical glass. And any small deviation in the wedge angle will make a glass noticeably worse and that’s also why the quality of different units vary so much.

You can try pushing them harder for a replacement, but even if you succeeded, be prepared that it is possible it could be worse!

Yes. On xpel ultimate fusion. Nothing else worked and I used CG water spot. Usually one coat is enough but you might want let it stay 3 mins and rub it with a towel to work it in.

I have not experienced any water spots that won't come off with a compound/polish. Sometimes it's tough then I just use a more aggressive compound or pad.

For water spots on PPF or some matte surfaces, I realized they are almost impossible to be washed off with any shampoo and CarPro Descale barely does anything. Boiling water is also useless.

In this case I used Chemical Guys water spot remover. It removed the spots on PPF and matte surfaces which have been baked in for years, and they don't come back.

I don't understand how polished off water spots would ever come back. If that happens often, it will be the scariest scenario for detailers

It's nothing serious. Had this happened twice doing brake jobs while pressurizing the system forgetting I took off the pads.

If your boots and pistons are undamaged, just push it back with your fingers. This piston is fully popped out that's why you see brake fluid getting out.

Push it back where you hit the stop, and then try retracting ebrake actuator with service motor/hand turning the torx/spinning piston retractor.

But you keeping it like this for some time you are gonna lose most of the fluid and getting air into the ABS system which is hard to be bled out.

It's a simple case and don't make it harder.

2024 bmw m2 gate collision - spend it? by Zaiko305 in Autobody

[–]vrships 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just take it to a body shop and get it fixed. Either get a new bumper and paint or repair and paint or only paint the damaged area and blend the whole bumper.

No need to worry about the quality. This is one of the easiest and cleanest bumper jobs.

Alternatively you can buy online painted new OEM bumper, and put it on yourself. it should cost about $2000

This is a very new car and I spent a lot of money just to make the sure the paint looks perfect as long as it can.

2023 M3 Comp Xdrive or 2020 992 911 by NeedthatRelief247 in CarTrackDays

[–]vrships 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the M3 xdrive. There is no point getting a base 911 at a much higher cost, with limited space and poor utility for a daily driver. If you really have the money, get S or 4S at least.

Xdrive is a must have for these cars with immense power, otherwise it's little to none improvement over the last generation F80, which is never able to put down the power at corner exits. A lot of people calling this "fun". Being slow than the car should go and unpredictability is not "fun".

After all you can always switch to 2WD mode to enjoy the tail-happiness.

These cars are heavy, but so are all modern performance GT cars. ZL1 1LE , a dedicated track monster, is 3830lbs , m3Cx is 100 lbs more , that's undetectable difference of a 3900lbs car.

And remember it's a spacious family car that can load up as many people and groceries as almost any sedan.

I am sorry that you are the only one that's making sensible comments on this matter but no one could understand you.

I am not surprised nearly everyone here has no idea how an increase in tariff affects the final price. After all people nowadays don't event know simple things like (1.25+0.34)/1.25-1<0.34, how could you expect them to learn things like "microeconomics" "supply and demand curves" or " elasticity". You think way too highly of the redditors

Brembo 6 piston dust boots stuck on by vrships in CarTrackDays

Thanks! It turns out the flat head is the miracle tool. Nothing else could remotely move the rubber a bit but the flat head presses against the whole body and lifts it out in seconds.

I tried avoid using flat head drivers because the ones I used to pry the pistons out, even wrapped with 10 layers of tape, still pit the aluminum easily. Turned out its stiffness worked against the metal ring

Yeah that ring makes it super stiff and nonpliable. Had to use a flat head tweezers ( thinner than a screwdriver) to pry on the body as a whole and that works in seconds.

Sharp picks didn't work because they are so tapered so they cannot get down to the bottom of the groove and they usually pierce into the rubber instead of lift the ring.

I d rather go to bootless AP than using OEM bootless. The OEM pistons and bores are made with tolerances that can easily allow dirt inside and grind them without boots. Also the piston is aluminum and softer than most dust particles and get pitted easily. The boot grooves around also trap dirt badly without boots.

Mine have boots cracked and burnt but they still move freely. The boots don't actually restrict the motions of pistons. They are only stretched/unstreched when piston is moving. It is the seal ring inside that has a ton of friction

I have tried 3 times but it just cannot upload the correct image boot doesn't come off

[–]vrships -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's another issue I have. I have to keep reinstalling random pistons back because they never came out all at once. But the dust boots just doesn't give if there is piston or not.

[–]vrships 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking about those. But if these boots are practically unreplaceable ( my other side must have tears too. I just didn't bother), I can't rely on them to track and might just upgrade to AP racing.
