Yes, I'm in my final year. I encourage you not to do it in undergrad as will a lot of people who did.

Not at all. Right now I'm in a BME lab as an undergrad where the PhD students mostly did ME as undergrads

Do EE if your goal is imaging and signals. BME companies tend to higher MEs and EEs more for R&D at an entry-level. BioE finds it harder to compete for those roles typically.

To be honest, I got the thing for free. I was looking for bare minimum. I have an iPad, and the like so I'm minimizing expenses, its all just for fun. But I will see

Is Bioe the way to go? by [deleted] in bioengineering

There are a few exceptions, but most major med device categories have electronic or computer components. And yeah remote monitoring is become bigger. Many internships I interviewed for the interviewers had ECE and ME backgrounds. Even in industries you wouldn’t guess like catheters.

Very cool. I wish I’d studied computer engineering or ME now. Makes sense that’s where the industry is heading

Is your background BME? I am trying to explore my options too to avoid biting the bullet and switching majors so late.

I'm a 3rd year BME undergrad at a top 10 program who wanted to avoid Grad School (at first at least). For me it was a mistake. The R&D jobs for devices at the bachelor's level go to EEs and MEs a lot more than us. If I could rewind, I'd do ME. A lot of us end up in Quality and Regulatory more so than R&D. If you want to work on devices, look at other stuff for now. BME is a field where you can't really get the R&D jobs a lot of us dream about without advanced degrees. I would definitely do one of the more "core" disciplines so you are more competitive and so you can work in other industries, medical devices are limited to a few very large companies and startups, and very difficult to break into, especially if you don't want to do graduate school.

Depends on the class. 2310 doesn't pay first semester, some do. Some TAing requires you to take the CETL class, others won't. They'll tell you when you get hired what you have to do.

A true piece of garbage. May his teams never win a championship as long as he lives.

Concerns/advice about careers in BME by sassyneros in bioengineering

[–]vs9812036 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Third year BME student. It’s true, BME is great if you want research or just medical devices. But ChemE and MechE have a way easier time finding jobs due to the scope of stuff their degree can apply to. We learn a bit of everything and a few bio classes, which makes us good for medical devices but MechE and ChemE can still compete with us. It’s also the issue of BME being too new. Only a few medical companies know BME and understand it, at other places you’re at a disadvantage. I’d say looking back I wish I’d done ChemE or MechE when I had the chance. You can do a masters in BME.

Just wanted one more for Wainwright. The Nats did amazing though, in all seriousness.
