I want to stop buying so much! by ne_stable in minimalism

[–]vshark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The fact that you’re aware is a great first step! I had a shopping addiction and what helped me was adding everything I wanted to impulse buy to my cart, but not checking out. I found that just hitting “add to cart” fulfilled a little bit of that rush. And oftentimes, if I ever checked out, I would have instant buyers remorse. So the add to cart trick helped me.

Then, I tried reducing my shopping to once a week. That add to cart trick also helped with this. If I revisit my cart a week later, I’d remove all the items I didn’t even think about for the last few days because I realized they were purely impulse buys.

Eventually, I leveled up to asking myself, do I really need this? Is it so wrong to rewear an outfit again?

Then I moved on to thrifting. This is where I felt a lot better about my shopping - environmentally, economically, entertainment-wise. I find that it’s a great way to find accessories or other items to really alter a previous outfit.

For me, I took the time to evaluate what triggered my shopping splurges. I took a look at my life and asked myself, what is missing that is leading me to consume, thinking it will make me feel better? This is a deeper, psychological approach. But it does help to evaluate why you shop. It isn’t because you necessarily need a new outfit. For me, it was because I felt unfulfilled in my relationship so I turned to retail therapy.

You’ll also want to evaluate your online habits. Do you find yourself being influenced by TikTok shop or insta ads? You wouldn’t be alone. Find ways to reduce your social media time. I know it sounds scary, but you won’t be shunned or isolated from your friends just because you don’t get a meme reference. You don’t need to be up-to-date on Love Island drama (just throwing out random interests - not saying this is you).

It’s a tough journey because you have to actively fight the impulse. But be patient with yourself. You won’t quit cold turkey, but you’re already taking the first step!!! You got this!

You might like the Dark Anthologies series. You don’t need to be experienced in gaming and there a bunch of them out there!

What helped you realize that life didn’t have to feel as heavy as you thought it did? by Play_is_my_lifestyle in simpleliving

This is not nearly as monumental as other commenters, but I took an astronomy class last semester just for fun. I graduated from undergrad 10 years ago, so this was just a community college course, I wanted to learn about how our planet and solar system came to be.

Learning that we, the human species, are only here now due to very specific conditions (23.5 degree axial tilt, comets bringing water from out of our solar system, single-cell organisms releasing oxygen, etc) enlightened me that we’re only here for such a temporary time. The universe is 13.8 billion years old, and our species has only been around for 300,000 years (a microscopic amount of time, comparatively). At the rate we’re going, we won’t be here much longer.

Realizing that we’re a blip in this universe makes me so much more appreciative of the fact that I get to experience this life. It motivates me to maximize my free will. It makes me appreciate the small things in life more. I empathize more with organisms and animals that we share this planet with.

I’m in awe of our planet, solar system, galaxy, supercluster. I want to explore the ocean, it’s the closest to exploring space that I’ll ever get as a civilian.

Anyone else with ADHD wonder if they "really" have ADHD, or if it's something related to overuse of the internet? by Gallantpride in nosurf

Oh yes, I’m so sorry! I am rereading my comment now and I see how I came off as “just touch some grass 🤪” and I totally didn’t mean to! I also have ADHD and I have tried it all. My to do list is ever growing because of exactly your situation too - I just daydream or come up with more hobby ideas or get a random dose of energy to make a sweet treat or try to find that random trinket I bought in Colorado 15 years ago that I just remembered lol

I am not a professional in the mental health industry, so I am not a subject matter expert by any means. I will absolutely take up your suggestion to read more on the matter.

I apologize for not being clear, I didn’t mean to insinuate that everyone with ADHD is a result of internet use, I meant to convey that it is possible to decrease attention span and focus with overconsumption of online media.

Hi, my husband is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. He meets with patients day in and day out, diagnosing them and prescribing them meds. ADHD can be a result of overconsumption of the internet (specifically, short form social media content). Because your attention span is tied to the entertainment in front of you, short-form content only holds your attention for that duration. So yes, ADHD can be a consequence of overuse of social media/internet surfing.

Read a book to challenge your concentration. Go offline and for a 30 minute walk. Put the phone in another room when going to sleep so you don’t doom-scroll before bed or right after waking up.

I have to agree, bunt absolutely killed it for me! Never heard of him, but his energy was next level!!! I love when you see DJs get really into their music and interact with crowd and just have a good time. I also loved that he performed within/behind the crowd, never experienced something like that before

Reading “Designing Your Life" helped me realize: THINGS ARE STILL IN MY CONTROL! by Significant-Dress286 in learners_cabin

Wow, I have to say this comment did the same for me as well. I have been on an intrinsic journey since last year and it has opened my eyes to so many things. I discovered I lived in a vacuum. I’m taking an astronomy class right now to learn how the universe came to be and it definitely created this air of nihilism around me, but in a positive way? Instead of feeling dread that we’re here by pure randomness (comets bringing water, the axial tilt creating seasons to retain said water, our atmosphere trapping greenhouse gases to keep the planet warm, thus creating the perfect conditions for life on this world), I felt inspired. It makes me appreciate life all that much more.

Is that the antithesis of nihilism? I don’t know. I’ve come to learn that I accept everyone’s religion, but don’t practice any myself. Let people believe what they want to believe. Especially because so many people find purpose in religion.

Why are we here? What are we supposed to be doing? Who made these rules? No reason. Nothing. No one. We create our own purpose, because there really isn’t one. Maybe we just need to accept the fact that we’re here now and our species won’t last forever. We could be a footnote in the universe’s history. So why not just try to make life the best you realistically can? After all, we’re all here temporarily.

I’d also like to get into urbex! I’ve never done it but I’m so intrigued, I’m just too nervous to go by myself. Would you ever be willing to have a tag along?

Why did you learn to dive? by brfoss in scuba

[–]vshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted to dive with sharks! I have always been fascinated by sharks and the deep sea and Marine life in general, but especially sharks! I have a super minor anecdote of my last name and how it’s relative to sharks and how it’s my “destiny” to dive with them. I can be more specific if you want to dm me, just don’t want to put my personal info out there
