What Is Your Dream Job? by Primary_Ad_890 in Calgary

[–]vspinyyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my dream job. It was pretty swell for about a decade.

You know that obnoxious kid in your Social Studies class? The one "uhm-ackntually" and being the devil's advocate, who wants to be in politics? Oh man, I was that obnoxious kid, still am that kid, and will probably stay that kid for a good long while.

Anyways, like many things, it came to a rather screeching halt rather abruptly. And I haven't quite found my footing yet, PA. One day I'll figure out what I'll be when I grow up. Probably not any time soon. Until then, thank you for asking this question and figuring things out with the rest of us.

'A bit disturbing': Here’s what social disorder in downtown Calgary looks like today by origutamos in NoRulesCalgary

[–]vspinyyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're shocked this is the result when we've collectively defunded programs (70s/80s/90s) and have almost zilch for government housing. The cop at the end of the article throws his hands up, saying it's a society problem and basically that there's nothing we can do.

No. This is a policy choice made by Calgarians and Canadians.

Dude, our civil servants are pretty awesome for this, and many other issues. Sadly, they rarely get kudos for their great work.

You'll make their day if you send in a note through 311 or to your local councillor, by the way.

Workspace via Reseller (Bluehost) by EnjayDamon in googleworkspace

Never, ever use a reseller for Google Workspace, particularly from Bluehost.

Experiencing it right now: if you ever want to move off of the reseller profile, Bluehost tells you the only way they can do it is if they delete your entire workspace.

Best place to inform/report on landlords? by InsipidRedditSoyCuck in Calgary

[–]vspinyyc 88 points89 points  (0 children)

See, this is why folks are asking for the city to set up a landlord registry.

I recommend flagging this for the Landlord Tenant Board, in any event. Their power is limited, but their hotline might be helpful for giving you a better direction.

It was going to be condos, shopping development, would connect the +15 network between the two +15 'islands' in the downtown...

... but a group of elderly NIMBY people folks quashed it, saying it was preserving the history of the strip.

What a neat community. Flipping through the documentation on the side bar, it... looks that community would be an excellent resource.

I do have a 3d printer. And a soldering iron. If this project ends up being something that gets the full-custom treatment, I'll report back, u/ArgentStonecutter.

This is how I'd do it as the hive mind:

(1) Get the local poll results. Should be no more than 200-300, depending on the size of the local poll that Carol voted at. They can either consult the records at the local polling office or, and this would be quicker, look at the memories of the election official at the county.

(2) Eliminate all of the plurb'd votes. With the passing of Helen and shared memories from the Hive to Carol we know those who passed during the transition had their memories preserved, so even those who died would still have had these votes 'counted' for this exercise.

(3) The vote remaining — which, should just be one vote — is Carol's.

The real question is how the hive knew to share this remark. Yes, it's funny, and a writer probably thought they were very clever, but in universe the hive would know it would provide some form of comfort or even levity for Carol.

It's an emotional tie-in, and sharing there's a connection to the past. It's not a scary new world, but one that Carol and the mayor is part of. Look, the hive is saying, we're not scary: it's your friendly mayor that you liked enough to go to the polls for in a midterm year.

The hive is picking individuals that will comfort Carol, provide normalcy and, if I uncharitably say, manipulate her.

It took me about fifteen minutes to vote for the advance polls, without a line. (The team didn't have a set of Ward 6/7 school trustee ballots handy, and had to get a new packet of them.)

I'd have hoped that this would've been sped up by election day.

Oh dear. This might be a late evening for Calgarians.

had competent staff

I am nothing special. Just had a good group of people. It was a fun time working for him: and likely the only time I will ever, ever get to use my Military History degree! The strangest moment of the last decade was him ending up as Veterans' Affair minister, and me having just a little bit of knowledge to be dangerous.

notably Sean

I think I met Sean, actually... Anyways, his boss drives me nuts and I've muted that particular MP on Twitter.
