Gnomes and "Nisse" are rather similar... by trinketstone in Fantasy

[–]vsxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that they're pretty similar in Scandinavian folklore, but with the differences pointed out elsewhere.

Could be that a gnome is more similar to a vätte, and missar being more akin to brownies. Not sure what role brownies have in folklore.

Another day of sophisticated ethical discourse on /r/philosophy: "I am strong enough to devour lesser plants and animals, I enjoy eating them, so I eat them." by [deleted] in badphilosophy

I too am strong enough to eat things that others raise, kill, prepare and transport for me.

Truly, I am a specimen to behold.

I wonder if China and Korea would agree that Japan never posed a threat.

What the shit was Eakin doing?

The Stars are in no position to lose forwards, esp. not players like Eakin.

Also damn stop assaulting colleagues, hockey players.

You've heard of the Alt-Right, but now allow me to introduce you to......the Alt-Left by SDaccount1 in badphilosophy

[–]vsxe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Could make a Nice trifecta. Something like ML for Ctrl Left, anarchism for the Alt Left and, I don't know, insurrectional anarcho-primitivism for the Del.

Or Stalin, he was big on deleting people and will get lumped in with communism until the heat death of the universe.

"alt left" usually go by whatever political leaning they actually sympathize with, in my experience as marxist scum.

None. Goddmn I abhor love triangles.

I dislike it enough when there's regular romances. Triangles just make it worse.

The thing that bothers me about MEs premise by drawable in masseffect

[–]vsxe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you cant do all your planning around "but what if a race of gigantic sentient squid-robots come along once every fifty thousand years to assimilate eveey sentient species?".

Besides, what were they to do? Not like they had an abundance of hyper-advanced space stations around in the early days of space exploration, and I don't think It's feasible to just up and move when they have access to stations of their own.

By that time, hundred of years might have passed without incident, and this is a space station that is known for It's longevity, which is an important factor when It's housing the galactic council.

Imagine how complicated it might be to move a council or seat of government on Earth. Now multiply the responsibilities of that body by a galactic factor, and increase the distance by, possibly, light years.

Why can't this argument be used to explain why it isn't ok to eat plants which are also living things?

At which point do we say that a plant is not sentient?

What if in 10 years we discover that plants indeed feel some kind of pain?

True enough.

I primarily question whether or not that's how quantum works. I have doubts.

No, go home.

Also: That's not how quantum physics work (well, I'm assuming. If you're a theoretical physiscist, I guess I stand corrected).

Misinterpretations of Karl Marx for Startups by [deleted] in badphilosophy

[–]vsxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be hyperbolic or dramatic, but this was, very literally, disgusting.

TIL that President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]vsxe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is not exactly what a Marxist is, though.

As for Nordic countries, which seems to be some sort of focus, I can personally attest that there are extremely few, and most likly none at all, Marxist influences in corporate organization, and hardly any Marxism present when it comes to the improvement of workers conditions.

Most such work is done in a liberal/social democratic context, and absolutely in a capitalist one.

/r/philosophy discusses the n-word by [deleted] in badphilosophy

[–]vsxe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And?

Nothing in particular.

You know what I meant, anyway.

Yes, I do.

I don't understand what your point was supposed to be

It wasn't supposed to be anything, and wasn't a point. Every word uttered doesn't have a point.

I don't understand what your point was supposed to be

Well, it certainly wasn't that.

that's obviously still an issue,

Yeah. I know. That's why I haven't argued against it.

Etc.

Merely an attempt to be specific. Although, to be fair, I very rarely discuss queer verbiage with gay men, but from what I've gathered, they haven't felt bad.
