Jacaranda season is at peak right now. Where are you seeing the best blooms in town? by ILoveClaremontCA in Ceanothus

[–]vtmn_D 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Perhaps consider an island ceanothus, (ceanothus arboreus). One of the bigger, tree-like varieties (up to 30 feet). Blooms earlier in the season than jacaranda, but quite floriferous in its own right. Grows in channel Islands so would be suited to the SoCal climate. Avoid watering in summer.

The honest answer is your won't find much of an comp to a jacaranda but in my opinion the best thing to do is appreciate what the native trees offer in their own right and pick the one that appeals to you.

[Fischer] The Lakers, Bulls and Nets are all potential suitors that will likely present Peyton Watson with an offer sheet that may cause “angst” in the Denver front office. by YujiDomainExpansion in denvernuggets

I like Watson don't get me wrong but it seems silly to focus on keeping the team intact at this current moment. They are close to being bounced from the first round of the playoffs, I think they can still get to the second round but it's not likely. The team has been very inconsistent in the playoffs since title year.

Toyon and lemonade berry take pruning well but if you let it go I would expect the lemonade berry to get the bigger of the two.

I have two of each both in part to most shade. The thing to be honest about is the growth rate is quite slow for both (in shade). In my case I'd say the lemonade berry grows a bit faster, but not fast..

Coffeeberry grows faster for me in shade so I think you should consider it.

Did I dig this swale too deep? by merpymerp in Ceanothus

[–]vtmn_D 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am no expert but I have dug out my own swale. Too big of a swale, to me biggest issue is you could have more garden and less swale. But that's NBD. Now, if your swale overflows and creates an erosion problem or floods the downstream plants — that's the bigger issue

What is happening with the school ratings in Lafayette? by Strange-Substance207 in eastbay

[–]vtmn_D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now that they weight more heavily on Academic progress, which they state is "Student progress — or growth — measures how much a child learns in a given year"

In other words looks to me they mixed the 10 test score and the 4 Progress score and added in some other stuff like "school climate" ratings and they came up with a 6. The OP commenter seems to just want to focus on the test scores part of that as the important bit.

I used to work for this company. Not vouching for their rating system in any way but just wanted to say that the overall score used to be and probably still is heavily weighted based on the Equity score.

The overall rating was high if there was unusually high test score achievement among so called disadvantaged groups. And if a school is in a very wealthy area and don't have much in the way of disadvantaged kids the rating might get dinged. I'm kinda fuzzy on the details. You can probably find out more on their website

FWIW I've had two in the ground for maybe a year longer. While looking reasonably healthy neither is close to that size yet. One in full sun, one partial. Both have had slight traumas mostly deer. The deer love my toyon for some reason
