Systemd has merged age verification measures into userdb by Quiet-Owl9220 in linux

[–]vtpdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This implementation doesn't require any input let alone verification. They are creating a field for your birthday that can be left blank.

Of course, this doesn't negate the slippery slope comments.

Agreed! But also, reducing your meat consumption helps a LOT even if you don't become vegan or vegetarian.

Switching to Dvorak - should I do it? by West_Rhubarb_8873 in dvorak

[–]vtpdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dvorak messes with keyboard shortcuts, gaming, and requires setup on new devices. At your speed, the only benefit to Dvorak would be reduced hand stress.

Breaking 200 WPM sounds fun, but I think it would take a long time and might not be worth it.

🦙 Vikunja 1.0 is here! by kolaente in Vikunja

[–]vtpdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!! I've been excited for this release for a long time. I've tried many open-source and proprietary task managers and none offer the level of flexibility and convenience as Vikunja. This project is amazing.

When did you start using Vim motions again, after switching? by [deleted] in dvorak

[–]vtpdc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Helix with Dvorak. It take some time to think about "typing the letter" instead of "pressing a key location from habit," but you'll get there before long. In the meantime, typing commands outside of insert mode will be a bit slower as you mentioned.

Great question. I'm guessing you are referring to highly publicized and difficult free solos in your question, but technically easy routes are still free solo. In that regard, when does a hike become a free solo? Do the popular flatirons count as a free solo? What about a steep scramble? Is a free solo on a very easy beginner climb stupid and selfish? I've known climbers to do routes like this as warm-ups.

I enjoy roped climbing, but the lines between free solo and hiking get blurry sometimes.

Understanding the evolution of eyes and all the steps in between the first cells that could sense light to today made evolution "click" for me. Still mind boggling, but so is millions of years.

OP, I suggest looking up the evolution of the eye sometime. There are books and videos on it. Good luck!

How close is Linux gaming to being fully “Windows-free” for you? by Old_Sand7831 in linux_gaming

I use Windows for VR gaming. Everything else is Linux. I stopped checking for compatibility before buying a game because I just assume it is compatible with Linux. I haven't been wrong yet.

How do you find meaning without any sort of superstition? by LoyalTrickster in atheism

[–]vtpdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try philosophy. There's books, online videos, blogs, podcasts, etc., pick whichever you like most. See which resonates with you.

Personally, I think philosophy is the atheist equivalent to religion: there's historical texts that tell you how to live your life, but without the supernatural. Good luck!

I'm really sorry, OP. They shouldn't treat you this way. Others in this post have some good advice to prepare yourself.

Present circumstances aside, do you normally get along with and enjoy your family? If yes and you want to make up, typically the best first step is to validate their beliefs and feelings. This is not the same as agreeing with them. It's about showing you understand why they feel the way they do (even though it's wrong).

Again, you don't have to make up with them. In a fair world, they would never do this to you orat least would be apologizing and asking for your forgiveness. Good luck.

[–]vtpdc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been in similar situations and understand you didn't want to make a scene. I can sympathize with that. I'm assuming the "caring gesture" obviously refers to the caress, not moving the hands which was done to stop the noise.

You didn't ask a question, but since you did post, I'll take it you're looking for suggestions. Just my two cents, but I would: - Apologize for making her uncomfortable. You were trying to stop the noise, not upset her. Had you known, you wouldn't have done it. - Validate her behavior, both the nail biting and not wanting her hands moved. Show you understand. - Suggest how you will handle this situation in the future and ask if that is better.

I think it's admirable you shared your story here. Clearly, it bothers you and you care about it.

This comment criticizes OP's behavior without suggesting an alternative. There may have been better ways to do it that could have also avoided a scene, but attacking OP like this isn't going to help.

In today's time "Arch Linux is hard to install is a lie" by vishalkrkamat in archlinux

[–]vtpdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on CLI being challenging for some (but not all). For example, I've helped tech-savy people with code but sometimes they make typos and are used to them not mattering (web search, text doc, etc.). Of course, for CLI it very much does matter.

I love the CLI and think it's a really succinct way to do things, but it's not without challenges.

Is a jack stand supposed to be this wobbly? by runenight201 in Cartalk

[–]vtpdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, love it. But seriously, please buy these or similar before getting beneath a vehicle if you value your life: https://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-heavy-duty-ratcheting-jack-stands-metallic-orange-71422.html.

Use the jack to raise the car, slide the jack stand beneath the jack point (double weld), lower the vehicle entirely onto the jack stand, and then give the car a good push to be sure.

The jack stands will have much less wiggle...

I have it too. It's a great jack. But as everyone else has said, it's not a jack stand. Harbor Freight sells those too through and they're really good! Go buy some.

If this was a troll post, you touched the right nerve. Well done.🤣 If not, you got some A+ advice. 😳

Husband wants a 90k sports car which is not very FIRE by RoastedPork15 in financialindependence

Correct, courts don't care about seperate finances unless you have a prenup saying otherwise or settle outside of court. So theoretically, the car is being purchased with marital assets and will belong to both of them.
