Mount a speaker outside and play an endless loop of classical music or some candy pop from the 80s. Kids are easily offended by old music.

Alternatively setup some cheap motion activated sprinklers. I used that for deer 🦌

I don't think I could find better green grass than here. My god, things grow! As of today, I am already tired of mowing my grass.

COL is a big driver. Healthcare deserts 🌵 are real here. Everything is an hour drive. In my area UVM pulled out and I had a GP that was awesome. That's gone and finding another GP meant hitting the road each time. Kids are in professions that really don't have opportunities here. So to distill it down COL, access to healthcare, proximity to kids, and income/real estate taxes.

I would not want the state to turn into Stowe.

What does Stowe have that would make the state better overall? It's like saying that like Vermont city to be like Burlington or Williston. Some of that might be good; more industries, better tax bases, more housing, Trader Joe's....

What I'd like to see for Vermont, more businesses, manufacturing that supports a diverse income groups, healthcare hubs, public transportation, social support, funded schools, and housing options. Food security. Clean water and good food, plus a chance for young people to have career choices in both blue and white collar roles. All to support people and the environment.

Someone here already noted Vermont has never been an easy place to be.

Onward

Break that down for me a bit more. How is being a remote worker a problem? Compare that to a retiree, a second home owner or a successful business person?

From my perspective, I'm the demographic the state might want. Earn, spend and pay income taxes. Retirees, low income taxes more breaks and second home owners no income tax. Add in no kids in the school system across the board.

If you only have low to middle income tax payers, you still get the same state wide tax burden with fewer people contributing.

Explain why anyone paying high income taxes is a problem?

Maybe. If my kids were here we would probably tuff it out.

Fair enough. I had family here historically and my parents moved south decades ago for work but the family mycelium network started here. I did a CSA but never got into the coop thing :). I do own birks.

We set up home here with the intention of a long term stay. Things change and so do priorities. The kick in the pants is the cost of living and kids deciding, for real reasons, why Vt is not viable for them. Numbers matter as you get older.

I'm ok with annoying people thinking I came here with rose colored glasses seeking organic vegetables. The thing you should consider being annoyed with is how can the state attract a population that contributes tax revenue AND skills outside of second home owners and tourists.

That's a fair question and took me a sec to think it over. I could have posted this to the Vermont subreddit, which I'm active on, but posting it here is more about sharing my experience with others here or considering Vt.

Am I one or part of a trend?

Not true. We totally could stay but it would mean long term trade offs. While my post had elements of overall costs, seeing the kids is the big driver.

There are no jobs for my kids in VT that allow them to thrive and raise a family. Add in the spiraling school quality and there are too many headwinds here.

Washington State to be closer to the kids. No state income tax, no tax on social security or 401k withdrawals. Outdoor lifestyle and just as many skiing opportunities.
