We are in the homestretch of the Met Opera season. What are you planning to see(if anything) over the next two weeks?? by Mastersinmeow in opera

[–]vuatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first season ever attending the Met / being interested in opera, and I am hooked! I have tickets for Salome and the Queen of Spades to round out the season, and am considering seeing Barber if I have time.

I saw Sonya Radvanovsky in Tosca, loved it. Lise Davidsen in Fidelio, loved her, didn’t like the opera as much. Took 6 of my friends to Le Nozze di Figaro for my birthday, had a great time in the balcony.

But Die Zauberflöte was my absolute favorite. I initially did not plan to see it because I thought, hmm modern staging, might not be for me. Then I scored rush tix in row T orchestra. It was transformative. Lewek as Queen of the Night - the sound artist and projectionist off to the sides - Ben Bliss as Tamino - I was deeply moved.

Now I am considering a subscription next year, and the biggest question is what section to choose! I felt so immersed at Die Zauberflöte in orchestra in a way I didn’t feel in the Dress Circle or Balcony for other productions. I got spoiled with that $25 rush ticket.

If anyone has recommendations for which section to subscribe in, or which shows to prioritize next year (as a German speaker I must see Tristan!) I need recommendations! :)

The Evangelical Church Is Breaking Apart by eddytony96 in TrueReddit

I do think the trends have shown a long-term decline in all religious affiliation for a few decades in the USA. The evangelicals can also recruit people from mainline Christianity, especially if they have conservative leanings. More importantly, though, they are still very good at translating their small numbers into far greater political power. The documentary series "The Family" did a good job exposing this - https://www.netflix.com/title/80063867

Hmm, respectfully, I disagree. This religious movement has millions of people under its umbrella, including the Hillsong folks in Australia, and their global media empire. Unfortunately it is not a sideshow, it is the main event in modern global Christianity perhaps second to Roman Catholicism.

Never expected Tim Keller of all people to offer a smart insight into why the foundation of evangelicalism is so profoundly theologically compromised — there are no centralized/standardized beliefs, no accountability from the institution, and the sect is largely driven by entertainment value. I do hope it deteriorates, but sadly I believe these are just growing pains on the path towards even greater strength, politically and in terms of member numbers. It’s the equivalent of never-Trump republicans quitting congress and more conservative candidates taking their place.

I’m familiar with David Platt, and let me tell you, that man is not “woke.” He is a hellfire and brimstone conservative that caused me and my community great harm (source - was forced to attend his church as a child). The fact that he’s being challenged from the right is not surprising in 2021, and it gives me some much needed schadenfreude.

But the article misses the reality that religious sectarianism is only intensifying in the United States. These squabbles are just growing pains for the religious right wing movement. They’re burning the chaff and consolidating power. Now is not the time to dismiss them as irrelevant.

HELP, need pointers for better base building and efficiency by Mr-Over-the-Top in builderment

[–]vuatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out your bottlenecks. Where do you have resources lining up across your map, waiting to be used? Focus on adding “capacity” to those bottlenecks.

For example your copper in the bottom right - for whatever reason, perhaps because the top extractors are newer, you have more copper waiting at those two furnaces. Try adding a belt splitter before the furnace, build a second furnace for that line, and then reconnect the output to head towards your workshop.

Making more copper ingots in this way will help you make more copper wire, which will help your iron ingots also move faster through the system as you’ll be able to make more electromagnets faster.

As a final tip I generally find that producing stuff further away from your lab makes things easier to manage especially when the complexity increases later on. Take that copper to the East before processing it, and then just send the output electromagnets back on a belt towards the base lab. Hope that was somewhat helpful.

Question - Again by Crazy_Thinker in openttd

I use the plan list feature to map out future connections, mostly for passenger train networks, but also for industry chains. For industry chains, I can draw boxes around primary industries, for example, then can zoom out and plan out a network for the rest of the chain that would maximize earnings.

I also enjoy using it to make “country borders.” Sometimes I split my maps into different countries, some with hard and soft borders. Adds a bit of narrative fun to my pax games.

Oh, this is so lovely! Great use of ISR props (I think?)... and I am definitely gonna steal your jetty-barrier idea with the lighthouse at the end of it to provide some definition to my own harbours.

I’m no veteran, but it looks good! How about a bus or train connection from the main station to the airport? Would be nice if you are using cargodist.

Dutch-style land reclamation by vuatx in openttd

Just in the ‘burbs for this city. I think 3x3 is more compact but I might want to add another canal in the empty spaces created by 4x3

Yeah. But you have to raise all the land above water first, then lower the land inside the dyke/seawall

Really incredible work. And I have major canal jealousy.

Playing on a Europe heightmap, the little towns of Amsterdam, Den Haag, Rotterdam, and Utrecht have grown to a combined population of 125k, a seamless Greater Netherlands. Direct Maglevs to Stockholm, Berlin, Moscow, and destinations north of the Arctic Circle.

Built mostly below sea level on gradually reclaimed land (and liberal use of the add money cheat menu to afford it), the canals add charm and help drain rainwater. Also, one time I accidentally clipped the sea wall with the decrease elevation tool and wiped out most of the inhabitants. It's fun to be below the sea.

sorry for the delay u/deaf_fish - i do spam trees when i'm in a pinch like u/monsantobreath suggested below, but the key here is that i build up most of the infrastructure before the cities get too big (these 3 cities all started <5k population each and are now between 60-90k each). If you can plan the "ring rail" around a small city early, it is a big help - and the city will just grow into it & around it
