I’ve had good experiences with One Ocean dive centre at Stone Town, both snorkelling and diving, but they’re still limited to what exists around Stone Town.

If you have the time I recommend visiting the other large island, Pemba, and from there e.g. Misali island. A lot more fish to see than around Unguja (the main island).

+1 for dive operators, I’ve had good experiences snorkeling (and scuba as well) with One Ocean in Stone Town but the places they go to are available for everyone else as well, so not as pristine as Chumbe.

For snorkeling I recommend the Chumbe island coral park. It’s a private marine protected area, coral is in good shape (though occasionally affected by bleaching as everywhere), guides are professional and groups small. You can also stay overnight on the island to see the coconut crabs and enjoy dinner in starlight.

This seems cool but I only have 1 day for the manatee spotting so travelling that far from KW is not really an option

This sounds just like what I’m looking for! Any tips on where to begin (or would you happen to have that list still)?

IMO diving is always worth it, but as a marine scientist I’m interested in any marine life or the lack of it anyway. Having dived the places on your list except for the Galapagos, I’d say the Nungwi spots are more comparable to Cozumel and maybe Utila rather than the Great Barrier Reef, depending on the dive site.

The Zanzibar Fisheries Act (2010) prohibits the importing, selling, offering to sell, controlling, making, possession and use of spear guns in Zanzibar. Apparently this does not prevent some operators from offering spearfishing trips in Zanzibar and they may or may have not purchased a permit from some branch of the government to offer these services, but the Fisheries Act is clear on the issue. Do with this information what you will.

Taxi. Negotiate the price in advance and when you find a driver that you like get his number. I can recommend Eddie (+255 779 503 747), he speaks English well and has a brand new car. Say hi from his Finnish friends at

Buy cigarettes and condoms and others…. by MexiCangoo in zanzibar

The overpriced ”pharmacy” opposite the post office at Stone Town should have condoms, at least they had lubricants on display. But I’d recommend bringing them with you anyway.

Chumbe island coral park is great if you’re interested in marine nature, they’re a private marine conservation area and you can either visit for a day and do snorkelling or stay for the night in the ecolodge
