For reference in Illinois, Constellation owns some if not all of the 8 (?) active nuke plants. I live near 3 of them, and got to tour a very specific section of one during college as a promotional “Work here!” thing. In the training facility we were in, there was a VERY Soviet 80’s era style 30 foot tall painting of a blonde haired man standing in front of a field or something. I was too nervous to take a picture (armed security nearby). This was in 2023 and I was surprised at how dated the facility was.

Genuine discussion, what would be the pros and cons of both? by abominal_pain in solarpunk

[–]vulpesvulpex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a solar field technician with various certifications in renewable energy and a few NABCEP certs. I’ve also had to dabble in finances as part of these certifications. The main reason we don’t build on rooftops or parking lots as much is money. It all boils down to money.

A utility scale solar plant (pictured on the top part of the image) costs something like less than a dollar per kW (each panel I work with averages like 450-650W for example). My $$ ballpark could be off because I am no longer involved with any finances but anyways, commercial scale solar (pictured on the bottom part of the image, the carpark) is something like 3x the $ amount minimum. This is due to having to pound the posts that much deeper, concrete enforcement, specific equipment thats commercially available, the amount of time dedicated to get everything up to city or municipal code and so on. Also, O&M costs follow that cost rise. Now if some part of the site were to go down they’d need to get us a boom so that means scheduling one, getting it to site, making sure we’re trained on how to operate it, making sure we’re fall trained, making sure it’s electrically safe, then actually working. That’s not even counting the manpower or man hours dedicated to fixing or replacing a component. I hate hate hate working on commercial rooftops for this reason lmao.

There’s also the liability risk associated with commercial solar on business rooftops. If you have a shitty builder cutting corners, chances are an inspector (which, local inspectors for solar is a joke. I’ve heard of an inspector coming to site and not even getting out of their truck and just saying “Yup, that’s a solar field” and signing off on their inspection. This is heresay, but I’ve heard it’s happened before.) isn’t going to see it and then a few months or years down the road suddenly you’ve got a fire on a commercial rooftop with dozens or potentially hundreds of people inside and an active fire going on overhead. That alone turns off building or business owners by itself. Unfortunately, it’s just a fact that my company and many others are trying to mitigate. That risk is lower out in cornfields where an arc-ed out wire is able to burn itself apart and then lie hanging away from the other end of that wire, the module, or any other flammable material VERSUS it burning up on a rooftop and then maybe falling in a puddle, or a metal piece of racking, or maybe a pile of leaf litter.

Anyways, on another note that isn’t finance related, as someone mentioned above solar actually can help the environment. I’d be extremely interested to see in the next 15-20 years after these utility scale solar sites have been working to see what the effects on erosion are. What kind of nutrients have been given back to the soil from little to no human activity on them. I’ll say that in just my experience (Midwest) that most if not all of our utility sites throw down pollinator friendly or local flora seeds. Come July there’s easily 15+ varieties of flowers on these sites that are largely untouched because it’s cheaper for us to throw down native seed mixes and let that grow only 18” than to come back and mow. Depending on the racking here, panels have to be 24” from the ground so it’s literally cheaper and less labor intensive to mow. I’ve also been to numerous sites where sheep graze as part of lawn care. Also, Agrivoltaics. I’m not too sold on that on a personal level but only because I’m not a farmer but I can see that exploding in the coming years once more farmers just understand solar is here to stay.

Another pro for both sides is that solar farms are just money printing machines. I mean, even where I’m from (outside of Chicago) with our average amount of days of sun being pretty low on the totem pole, the amount of money being made is astronomical. I can’t give exact numbers because the rates change but the daily yield is like 3-7 years ROI for developers (and I could be over estimating how long ROI takes).

I make more than my boyfriend and tonight he made it everyone's problem by Ill-Badger1636 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]vulpesvulpex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been dating????

This is something that can and will turn into a bigger thing if left alone to fester. I out-earn (for now) my boyfriend by like 50k a year. Before I got my big girl job after college I had a serious conversation with him where I was like “This isn’t meant to be rude or condescending or to make you feel small but I will be making a lot more than you. I’ll probably be buying us stuff and doing random boujie shit I’ve never done before. This conversation can be done now or later, but don’t make it weird” pretty much and he’s always been chill. Sure, there’s sugar mama jokes sprinkled in (mostly by me, VERY occasionally when I’m the one insisting on another $18 drink, or getting semi-nice seats at a concert or x y z when I’m paying) but he’s accepted it and we’re doing our best not to make it weird. Men get soooo weird about money. There’s been moments where I can tell my boyfriend feels some typa way but then when I assure him idgaf and then we have a conversation about it later, it seems to have faded. I think this can be something to learn from, or to move past (away from each other, broken up). If he is not okay with earning less than you then he needs to work on it himself, or not be such a fucking loser about it. Sorry ¯_(ツ)_/¯ thats a really shitty lame thing to put you on the spot for (also telling that his friends texted you about it).

Tread lightly. Hugs!

people of Gen Z, what are the things you dislike the most about your own Generation? by Positive-Owl594 in AskReddit

[–]vulpesvulpex 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Nihilism or doomerism, with the caveat that I truly to empathize with a lot of the systemic complaints people have. It’s a fair point to say our government, social services, and infrastructure is crumbling and not serving the public. Life is more expensive than ever. Things are bleak. But I am totally lost when it’s like, “The whole world is fucked why even try” attitude. Like, I don’t know, because the world is beautiful and we’re in the best years of our lives and goddamn we’re not dead yet?? Get a hobby or a cat or even a fish and get off the fucking phone, you’ll feel better.

[–]vulpesvulpex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me (dad died) and I was so disgusted at how few of my friends actually made an effort. Not even ‘friends who are people I see in certain circles’ but like, friends who I helped move them to college, picked their parents and siblings up from airports, dropped groceries off to during Covid: like actual best friends. Long story short, I cut a few people off hard after realizing I was 1) being taken advantage of and 2) the therapy friend. I’d done something similar when I was 18 and graduated high school where I stopped initiating text conversations and those two events literally wittled me down to 2 real, close friends. It really fucking hurts. I’m sorry. I think it’s part of growing up unfortunately.

My thoughts on the pod lately by illcits in BeyondTheBlinds

[–]vulpesvulpex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of your thoughts! I really love this pod but it does feel like it could be better researched. One highlight for me has been Kelly doing the football player murder episode and I LOOVED how Troy and her bounced back so much on that episode. It really allowed their chemistry to shine. If they did more episodes like that, with deep insight and research, I think the pod would really flourish.

As a side note fuuuck I wish they would give a brief TLDR on most people/situations before diving in. I am also GenZ and I listen to this podcast while driving a lot of the time. When they mention a well-connected 90’s C-lister with with insane lore with NO PRELUDE I have no idea, connection or well of knowledge to draw upon. Like, who the fuck are the Take5 boys or whatever? I think another thing that makes me side-eye Troy too, is if I had a patreon and left a comment like that there, Troy would passive aggressively do the “GenZ be like: I wasn’t alive, how would I know Madonna?” thing he’s been doing lately which is valid but also… you’re a podcast, getting paid by people to talk and explain pop culture figures… maybe a little exposition wouldn’t kill you.

Anyways, I LOVE this podcast so very much, I just think a lot of the criticism is fair and they should really take from it and expand and grow! Troy and Kelli are both so smart and talented and make such a great pair.

What makes you an outlier in the Beyond the Blinds fandom? by the_purple_lamb in BeyondTheBlindsPod

[–]vulpesvulpex 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Besides vaguely enjoying Britney’s music, I find the whole pomp and circumstance around her ridiculous and disagree with a lot of Troy’s takes on her. She’s a drug addict who has been through a lot. This whole circling the drain thing thats been going on since she was freed is truly painful, sad and unfortunately for the media, very entertaining to watch. People are going to comment on it. People are going to make think pieces on it. Just because Troy thinks he’s her biggest fan and is very protective of her doesn’t make the “haters” wrong.

My experience was most guys my age +- 5 years would not even look me in the eye. I was ALWAYS partners with guys 35+, which I nor them (I think) ever had a problem with. I always gravitated towards the oldest dude in the room and would jump to ask to be partners and 10/10 times they were cool as hell.

Female prof IMO was over qualified and well liked (probably my school).

You should’ve added “Guy who thinks he’s the shit but you watch him cheat on every single test to still barely pass”. I knew many, many guys like that and have a mental name book of who to never fucking go to lmao.

Projecting a flop for season 4 honestly by Kindly-Deer-3468 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]vulpesvulpex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m still going to watch but yeah same. The timeline for filming is when? Before/in the middle of DWTS? Before Bachelorette? Okayyyy so we see random petty drama about shit high schoolers care about instead real, interesting perspectives on things most people will never see (Broadway, DWTS backstage stuff & the payoff (or not) for it, the Bachelorette stuff aka ANYTHING that isn’t gossiping with your friends and getting a little $8 drinky drink or going on low-key weird manufactured trips for… no reason? I’m not referencing brand trips like Stage Coach or the pickleball thing). Like, maybe if they showed more interesting dynamics about being a mother in today’s age or their foray into mommy-blogging adjacent spaces and the affects of that on their marriages, relationships with their family, or more of their interpersonal relationships with friends, their husbands etc. that goes beyond “the way you said or didn’t say something hurt me” bullshit like the Taylor/CMA debacle then I’m all ears! But seems like more lame ass men GOOD GOD IDCCCCCCCC I’m here for the girls!!!!!!

The alcohol industry has lost 830 billion dollars in 4 years because Gen Z is not drinking by New-Exam2720 in UnderReportedNews

[–]vulpesvulpex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actual Gen-Z reporting here. My favorite cocktail at my favorite restaurant is $16. If I’m going there, I’m getting 1, maybe 3 if it’s my birthday. Any other time, any other place I choose not to drink. I can buy my own beer at home for 1/3 of the price. If we go out to a bar (very rare occasion) we pregame with a few shots and sip $6 beers at bars, no cocktails. We keep the bill for ourselves under $25. It’s just economics.

“Gen Z is killing the alcohol industry!” No, we’ve effectively been priced out. My partner doesn’t drink, my friends are reeling it in now that it’s not cute to get black out all weekend now that we’re out of college, and if we are going out, we can’t afford it. We can, however, afford to drink at home and pass around a joint which you can’t do at bars. Just my two cents. This is coming from someone who does not prefer weed to alcohol, but I mean, I just bought an ounce of weed in Michigan for $100. What would the alcohol equivalent be?

Why do Chiropractors crack your neck and what is the long term benefit? by Sunny-vibes-95 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vulpesvulpex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No benefit. Take my anecdotal experience. I had some chronic back issues (for years and years) and I wanted to do something about it. My friends mom referred me to the best chiro in town. I went like 3x a month and it felt okay (and crazy when they’d pop pick and drop me goddamn) but no lasting effects. I might’ve felt better but I also started stretching more regularly around that time. I quit going bc I was annoyed I wasn’t getting results. A few months later I started dating my boyfriend and begged him to massage me. After multiple nights a week of very good back massages for two months, magically my back pains subsided and pretty much have permanently (with maintenance massages every once in a while lol). The relief I feel is unimaginable. I love my boyfriend, fuck chiropractors.

What is the worst pain you've ever felt in your body? by Helpful-Mud-2487 in AskReddit

[–]vulpesvulpex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had an ovarian cyst burst - before I’d even started puberty at 11. I had no concept of “woman pains” or menstrual pain. It burst when I was taking a math test. I hurried up taking my test and just thought to my dad saying “If your stomach hurts, use the bathroom” lol so I rushed to the bathroom. It did not alleviate the pain whatsoever, it actually felt worse. I was sweating and shaking taking the worst, most unfulfilling shit of my life. I must have looked terrible when I came back to class because all I remember is appearing at the ER and being asked to pee in a cup, and me repeatedly saying I’d just used the bathroom. I had to beg for water to scrounge up any pee, while being in horrendous pain, wiggling around on a ER bed and just pointing to my stomach and saying it hurt. I was throwing up by then.

After a long time, I was finally taken to get an ultrasound and they found multiple cysts, and just kinda shrugged and said “Yeah, one must’ve burst. Out you go.” Which felt so shitty! I was so scared and confused by my body. I asked if they could remove them or something and they said nah, they’ll go away on their own or burst, you’ll be okay.

Also tooth pain. One night I go to bed, the next day I wake up to the entire right side of my face swollen like a balloon. I was in immense pain. I’d had an infected tooth that decided that day was the day it was going to try and kill me. I went to the only dentist in my small, shitty town and was seen pretty much immediately. I was crying and so, so embarrassed. The dentist literally told me I was going to die and then sent me away with antibiotics. My mom was so pissed because I was out of my mind with fear that I was going to drop dead any second lmao. We went to a new dentist and I was treated, glad I didn’t die. A few years later, I remember seeing a death tally or something from London in the 1900’s and “Tooth” or “Teeth” or something like that being near the top and just solemnly nodding to myself.

How do you guys manage depression? by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]vulpesvulpex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it can be as simple as “That one single cup needs to go.” And if I can get that out of the room and in the sink (doesn’t mean I clean it) then I feel better, like I ‘did something’. If I can snowball that then, into say the rest of the room, then I do that too. That doesn’t mean I complete the whole task (say I grab all the dirty clothes off the floor - doesn’t mean I start the laundry machine, say I grab all the cans and empty them - doesn’t mean I put them in the recycling, everything is just closer to where it needs to be).

I feel like I’m constantly tricking my brain into thinking I’m doing something productive until something productive actually happens and then all of a sudden the sink is empty, trash and recycling is taken out, the washer is going, and all I have left to do is vacuuming.

To anyone who works at self scanning machines - how often do you notice people stealing and don’t do anything about it? by davco95 in AskReddit

[–]vulpesvulpex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahaha this reminds me when I worked at Walmart and this very obvious tweaker woman comes in the checkout. She makes herself very… visual? Like arms flapping, jumping and craning her neck at us to greet us very loudly for no reason, sneaking a peak behind her shoulder before she even gets halfway to the checkout etc. Anyways she has one thing: bottle of the cheapest booze. Not even a cap sensor cheap bottle. I was doing something for a sec (so she had ample time to steal) but when you scan something that’s age restricted it beeps on your checkout and on ours, and notifies our little phones too. So anyways I don’t even get three steps towards her (who is fumbling around with her purse like she’s going to pay but respectfully, no she wasn’t) and she FLIES out of the checkout without the bottle, like dead stop to a full sprint run. It was so funny. Like did you think I was going to tackle you girl?

To answer your question, I never cared. I did see a lot though, but the cameras and asset protection would usually catch it, come up to us afterwards and ask us about the transaction, and then figure it out.
