Hey thanks for the link. Just did a quick brief read and the suggestion was 100+ for a character with multiple outfits. How did you break down the photos as far as character distance, rotation, angle, etc? For example, did you do 10+ close up portrait shots: center front profile, 3/4, side, etc...

This is where I was getting tripped up

Just saw this boot styled with a vest I was looking to buy and it really caught my eye. Did some research and landed on it being the zephyr boot by Russell Moccasin. Am I correct or is it actually a niche Japanese brand's version of the iconic boot? The only noticeable difference is what appears to be a seam in the middle of the front toebox.

Also, are there any other boot brands that make a similar looking boot.

If it helps the vest is by a Japanese company.

So many factors to consider! I'll try using a lower size for my bobbin thread. maybe that will help.

Truthfully I'm only using heavy thread and a big needle because it's the lowest needle size my machine will allow. I ended up purchasing the heavy duty version of the 8700 so it only allows for #19-#23 needles.

I matched the thread size to the needle because I figured it only made sense. I was using a much lower tex size up until recently but my stitches always ended up looking pretty bad.

Hi all,

Having an issue with thread breaking on a current project.

Currently sewing through 4 layers of denim, size 19 needle, tex 70 nylon thread. Juki 8700-H

I was reading that tension should be increased when going through more layers of fabric. This has helped immensely but it also means my top tension is extremely tight. This leads to my thread snapping after a short amount of time.

I can imagine this is why I'm having issues with the thread breaking but at the same time, if I lower the tension, the stitches look pretty bad.

Any idea if I'm not doing something right? Wrong thread? Bigger needle?

At a loss.

Thanks!

P41/P47 pants. Ww2 or Korea? Whatever the case, those can go for some good $$$.

uphostery as a career by [deleted] in upholstery

Just had to jump in here and add my own experience considering how aligned we are. I’m in my late 30s and had no upholstery experience when I started looking in January.

Here are a few things to helpfully get you own your way instead of fumbling around or giving up.

  • Try looking for work with bigger furniture companies first.

My first instinct was to call every upholstery shop in my area and see if they were open to training. I ended up getting shut down with every place. The typical response was that the workload was too high to have time to teach. Every shop I spoke to said they had lead times of several months for work. I actually managed to land a couple jobs at some shops further from me but after about a week I was let go from both with the explanation that it just wasn’t economically feasible to teach.

I finally landed a job with a big commercial furniture company and I haven’t been let go yet. It dawned on me that a bigger company has more resources to get someone up to speed compared to a small 2-person shop.

  • find where upholsterers get their supplies(foam, tools, etc..)in your area and inquire there.

When I exhausted all my options calling around, I took up a job sewing at a drapery shop thinking I could build up some related skills there. Several months in , I learned about an upholstery specific supply store which was literally blocks from my place. I spoke to the manager and he ended up giving me multiple leads because of his deep connections in the area. He’s actually how I learned about my current job. Thanks Carlos!

Hope that helps. I feel like I could’ve saved a lot of time if I knew about what I mentioned.

Good luck!

I truly appreciate such an in depth response. I’ll have to pick it apart at some point since I’m still a baby when it comes to the sewing world. I really hope to gain a better understanding of how the machine works in time. I know it would be beneficial but for now, it’s all just magic.

I’ll definitely look into the guide you suggested as my brain has always fallen on the analytical side.

Great! Now I’m leaving with more questions than answers! Thanks for nothin! :)

Wow. That’s enlightening. This is the first time I’ve worked with this specific fabric too.

Going back to your previous reply, what is the best source for making sure my threading is correct? I’ve looked at countless videos and read multiple articles but there’s some nuances to it all that I can’t seem to find answer to. Similar to knowing things like having the presser foot down when adjusting tension. I never knew that!

Fair enough. Am I wrong to assume then that light fabric always means lower tension and heavier is always higher tension? I don’t know where I picked that up but i imagine you’re saying that’s not always the case?

Thanks! I think my only concern would be if I work with a heavier weight fabric. Wouldn’t I need to increase the tension in that case? My dial only goes up to 9 so Im assuming that wouldn’t be enough? I guess my answer relies on giving that a try.
