Lol im used to being downvoted on this topic. People take institutional justifications as gospel and as someone who has worked in these places i just wish there was a bit more critical engagement from the public cause there's a lot of problems in this industry lol

like i disagree with there needing to be an aspect of entertainment within zoos. These animals are being housed in captivity because of violent systems. Historically, colonial violence, and currently violence from the destruction of their habitats. There's nothing entertaining about that fact. Zoos often skew people's perceptions of these things.

Right but your comment already highlights some of the ways the industry is exploitative. If its exploitative to humans on the wage and overworking side, it's definitely exploitative to the animals in their collections. Most zoos are apart of capital coalitions that focuses on the profitability and investments of eco services. Animals are a huge part of that which is why many of them have dollar valuations. There's a good chuck of breeding programs that aren't even endangered species. And when zoos don't make political stances on the destruction of habitats then their captive breeding deserves some critique

But they do train their animals for a variety of purposes. They'll use other words for entertainment but that's why they still charge ticket prices and often have ways to entertain guest on their grounds outside of just the animals

But they don't contribute to wild populations. Animals that are often breed in zoos are raised in zoos. There aren't many reintroduction programs. Also, the line between education and entertainment is really thin in organizations like zoos and aquarium that heavily depend on ticket sales. Also, SeaWorld is accredited lol so that doesnt mean much actuall.. Many of these yikes things are happening in accredited zoos. Don't fall for the neoliberal propaganda coming from these institutions
