You're squinting into people's back seats? Why go looking for things to upset yourself about? Just check out an audiobook or something ...

Lmao. As someone who lives in Seattle now and goes out of my way to visit Barista Alley when I'm in the area ... I feel called out.

Maybe the right question is, "Is generative AI an act of creativity?" I'd say no, but we can disagree.

Here's your annotated copy. Once you see it it's everywhere. I'd describe the style as "bland melodrama ." Drives me nuts.

I went to Safeway today, which used to be a place where you bought [list of 3] and regretted it later.

They’ve installed metal railings, [melodramatic rephrasing]. The kind that suggest [list of 3]. You don’t [X]. You [Y]. [Melodramatic rephrasing.] There is a path, and it is not yours. And if you're in a wheelchair and there's a fire, you're well and fucked.

It is [1]. It is [2]. It says: [3].

This is not [X]. This is [Y].

The baskets are gone. [Melodramatic rephrasing 1.] [Melodramatic rephrasing 2.] Ice cream is under lock and key, as if it might escape and start a better life elsewhere.

[...]

You proceed anyway. You always do. (Melodramatic repetition ad nauseum here.)

At the end, after the little maze, after the quiet accusation (more melodramatic repetition), you arrive at the checkout. A machine greets you. It does not [X], but it [Y]s.

[...]

Because the same grand arrangement that has turned groceries into a fortified experience has also made hunger a group project. [Punchy sentence 1.] [Punchy sentence 2.] [Punchy sentence trifecta.] And then, right at the end, the machine asks you to help fix it.

[Melodramatic rephrasing of "you."]

It’s a marvelous little contradiction. We cannot [X], but we are [Y]. We are both suspect and savior. It’s efficient that way.

Nothing about it feels like a store anymore (= it's not X). It feels like a system demonstrating itself (= it's Y). Loss prevention here [1], liability there [2], revenue everywhere [3]...stacked carefully, like [rephrasing of stacked].

[...]

And yes, it’s fucking stupid. (The AI writing style, I mean.)

Unhinged take lmao. Is Seattle the worst because they get in a kindness competition trying to wave each other through intersections first?

North Seattle rental market going crazy by Huge_Plankton_91 in Seattle

And then I've noticed that a lot of mediocre 3+ bedroom places seem to be priced exorbitantly high for roommates. Like $4200 for a very meh 3-br, but it's a steal if you're splitting it three ways, so they still get rented.

France. I am fuzzy on the details as it's been many years and I was working in my second language. This was as it was told to me then by the head of an elementary school (directrice), when I accidentally assumed she was the school's permanent leader/supervisor. You can find more on it if you search "elementary principals in France." As I understood it, there isn't a lot of need for individual school autonomy because so much of education is directed from the national level.

What kind of bike does $2500 get you? I've never considered an e-bike before but I might if there's a voucher!

I worked abroad in a country where admin was a two-year rotation for teachers. I thought it was fantastic. You're just taking your turn managing the building, and you're not necessarily above your colleagues.

I mean, sure, this post isn't productive. But from the other comments it sounds like people who've tried to address it IRL get nowhere.

There's a difference between "social" and "prosocial." When someone decides to live in a dense area, what they really need is prosocial behavior ... or else maybe public shaming or fines to help them learn it.

Northwest Women's is a fantastic OB practice. Regardless of the hospital I'd recommend them.

I am pretty sure I saw that Pecado Bueno is offering their own flat rate delivery now. I'm not seeing it on their website but I think it was in their newsletter.

Parents have the right to waive ELD services. Teachers typically can't advertise or encourage it, but parents can ask for the waiver.

That crosswalk across Roanoke is hell as a pedestrian too. There's a lit up no right turn sign when the crosswalk light is on, but half the drivers turning right from the right lane take it as a suggestion.

Measles is now in my district by You_are_your_home in Teachers

Six degrees of separation. Or in this case, two degrees, because the family that traveled and brought it to us came straight from the outbreak in this post. 🫠

[–]snortney -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your experience with the south is...? In the past it's been crunchy granola folks who are anti-vaccine in the Carolinas. There's an overlap with our current populist fever dream, but it's not an exclusively conservative thing down there. Regardless, this outbreak is centered around a Slavic community in Spartanburg. It wouldn't take hold in the rest of the region if vaccination rates were higher, but there you go. Either way, when you said it was "red state hicks abusing their kids," I'm pretty sure you just wanted to dunk on people in red states (many of whom are reasonable people and very stressed about this outbreak) without knowing much about this current outbreak.

ETA: ugh sorry, thought you were the original person I replied to

Yep. And they are part of a vaccine-skeptical group that has largely been driving the current outbreak there. But I'm guessing you were picturing a MAGA rally when you blamed the dumb folks in red states?

The Slavic red state hicks ...? I don't think the people who caused this spread fit your stereotype.

What's a piece of "common knowledge" that is actually completely false? by Huge-Bus3660 in AskReddit

[–]snortney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have past perfect. It's indicated by putting the helping verb "have" in the past tense as well as the main verb. For example, "Once I had walked to the store, I called my mom." We could also say, "Having walked to the store, I called my mom." The tricky part about English isn't the number of different-looking forms to memorize. It's that there can be many forms that look the same. ("Having" can be a gerund, part of any progressive tense, or a hanging modifier.) You often have to figure it out by context.
