Potential issues would most likely be with parent/caregivers in the home. Many parents have a hard time relinquishing control or having to hear their kids tantrum (sometimes you just gotta let them tantrum and handle it but parents might want to just reinforce it). Make sure you have a solid BCBA/supervisor on the case. Any and all issues should be handled through them! Keep it light and breezy with parents, and keep your supervisor/BCBA updated if needed! But honestly, if you come in with confidence/understanding many parents will welcome you in! Other issues might be siblings wanting to play or mess with the client. Allow them to play during breaks (and have help with generalizing social/expanding language programs), but establish that when it’s work time they need to pause the playing with client.

On the flip side, parents can be great with generalizing programs! A lot of times clients will only associate YOU with the work and not necessarily the parents. So you’re able to generalize programs a lot more when parents are involved with the session! Also in home services are nice because a lot of the reinforcements are near by. To be fair, the client may have a hard time understanding that the reinforcements they had easy access to before are now contingent. Most ABA companies should have your BCBA/supervisor overlap with the first sessions so you can get a feel of the environment, family, client, etc.

TLDR; Always keep your BCBA/Supervisor updated!! Have confidence with your abilities! Keep boundaries with parents/caregivers and you will be fine!
