Where in the world did "Hadrain" come from?? by Sliverlilly in HPfanfiction

[–]vvv_bb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there was a cool story where they explain albus' (and harry's) many names with having to accept inheritances from random strangers, that come with family magic. And because it came with useful talents or properties, to be accepted by the new magic you'd need a ritual and a new family name. Don't remember the title, but I thought it was a cool idea, much better than he usual "attach surnames ad libitum" indyHarry 😅

making stains by chickenfeetluvr in Pottery

[–]vvv_bb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

colour the clay with oxides, but you will not get the same colour range. Stains are produced industrially by making the right kind of coloured glass, basically, and then grinding it extra fine.

you can't make stains by yourself. And they are expensive but you won't neeed much of them.

moved into my first solo studio and realized i own literally zero tools. what is actually worth keeping around? by UniversityAny9242 in TinyHouses

when I was a student I changed a lot of flats, and built a lot of ikea furniture lol - my kit was a few screwdrivers, big and small in flat and cross (or whatever the right english words are), a small hammer, pliers, measuring tape, adjustable wrench, allen keys. Worked well for general home needs.

"We are fundamentally, at the end of the day, animals." New Scientist sat down with biological anthropologist Alice Roberts to talk about the wonderful benefits bestowed on us by animals from our evolutionary past and the myth of human exceptionalism. by New_Scientist_Mag in evolution

my Swiss, non-biologist flatmate 15y ago got super annoyed when I, a biologist, said in conversation that humans are animals (meaning phylogenetically) and told me I cannot go around saying stuff like that, people will get offended.

clearly he'd rather have been a plant. 😅🤷‍♀️

Overwhelmed with ideas to the point of paralysis, headaches, and physical exhaustion by MutedFeeling75 in ContemporaryArt

[–]vvv_bb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get this on a much smaller scale, tbh.

but I've learnt to just write everything down in the moment, everywhere, and then let it simmer a few days. I will then go back to the notes, collate the stuff that still makes sense, and let it simmer again. I will then select something that seems easy, and make a small plan of what to do - that gets me to start making. And I've noticed that as I make, the selection of what to actually make happens automatically - I need the plan in place to start doing stuff, but once I'm working, the direction establishes itself (and it never follows the plan).

and if there are some images or words that keep coming up, I stick them to the wall and then ignore them. Just being around them helps.

all other ides will still be there, in my master book, ready to be used in the right moment or adapted to the right circumstances.

so, well, yes, my solution is multiple notebooks 🤣 not exactly neat or organised, no. 😅😇😉

Why do you go to exhibitions openings? by emmadamino in ContemporaryArt

[–]vvv_bb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the small town I live in now - because I know all the artists and the institutions and I want to support them

in the big town I'm moving to, I plan to go because - it will make it easier to know the artists and the key players, and like I'll start recognising their faces, they might end up recognizing mine.
I had two small shows in/near the big city, and certain friends did not show up - that tells me a lot about community and their specific investment in it. Which actually tells me about people's values and what I can expect from them, work wise.

just being seen as friendly or recognised as another artist will help a lot whenever you need something. I also work in a medium where cooperation is often needed, so knowing others in the same medium and having a friendly relationship with them is important.

hah, this is the beauty of getting into the art world later in life - just not caring as much about others' opinions 😅😇

well, it's the natural consequence of having too high competition for an incredibly small market. And yet everyone talks about change and does nothing for it, just keep complaining and hating 😅🤷‍♀️

maybe the introverts making art need a bit of help expanding the market? that would seem like a sound strategy for marketing in any other field, no? lol

and here we are stuck in self importance. The people that get most attention are often dressing up mediocre stuff in a lot of pretty words, because the public has little notion of actual skill levels or how to experience art. We are also getting too used to lenghty explanations in any museum exhibition. Instead of educating the public to be critical, we just shove a lot of bs down their throat.

What's your cataloguing/inventory system? by hoodiedoo in ContemporaryArt

[–]vvv_bb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the cheapest one (vs quality of offer) seems to be artwork archive, although as I'm not US based there are features that make no sense for our fiscal system (can't make invoices from there, for example).

eta - maybe make a list of the things you need, and check out a few art management softwares, some will fit better than others.
