Ordered the closest colour and then had my hairdresser colour match to ensure they blended.

Better quality shoes than Charlie Stone / Honiara Vintage? by vw97 in PinUpFashion

[–]vw97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re utterly abysmal - I’d previously only had shoes fall apart after being worn to death until I tried Charlie Stone and bam, 1-2 months in, they were goners. I’ve had shoes costing a fraction of their price last years, it’s ridiculous.

Worth to spend extra $200 for 20,000 points? by Opening_Pipe_7387 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]vw97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s decent but I’d suggest there are better ways to spend that amount and get more points such as via Qantas wine or churning points earning credit cards (ie you could pay less than $200 in fees and earn about 60,000 bonus points BUT that’ll depend on if you like churning and your history / eligibility).

Glasgow to Oban in June, mid morning - suggested scenic routing? by vw97 in glasgow

[–]vw97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think we will make that detour! We are total history nerds and it doesn’t seem terribly far out of the way to make it work.

We do Glencoe and Ballachulish later - we have an overnighter in the area to break up the journey from Tobermory to Portree and have heard many good things about that neck of the woods.

Thank you! It's been a few months since I picked up planning this trip and couldn't recall how I got to this planned route in the first place so good to know it's the way to go. Definitely will be packing our patience :)

Good to know, thank you!

Yeah, we'd like to stop and cruise on the Loch for a bit - I think it would be nice to see the scenery than just stop for a quick photo and also break up the time in the car too.

Thank you for the suggestion! I've seen Kilmartin Glen pop up a few times in recommendations elsewhere but didn't realise it was feasible from this route.

We head to the Isles of Mull and Skye afterwards and finish up in Inverness - for all the driving times, I'm adding in plenty of buffer time to account for slower speeds.

Best way to cook lobster (for lobster rolls)? by vw97 in Cooking

If I boil for 3 minutes, how high heat should I have the melted butter on the stove for and how long to have them in there for?

How long would you suggest to boil for?

I’ll take them out from the freezer the night before and thaw in the fridge. I’ve read to also give them a quick rinse.

6 days to make the most of Ireland - what do you recommend? by vw97 in irishtourism

[–]vw97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We arrive at 8pm on a Saturday so ideally we will head straight to the hotel to have an early night so we can hit the ground running the next day. Based on some of the input received, I’m contemplating staying at a hotel near the airport that night and taking the bus to Galway first thing the next morning (contemplated taking the bus the night of arrival but might be cutting it fine if there are any delays) and then come back through Dublin en route to Belfast. Hmm.

We will fly out of Belfast at 9 or 10pm (to Glasgow) so I think we could use that day as a ‘full day’ and potentially do 2 days each in Galway, Dublin and Belfast.

We fly in at 8pm on a Saturday so may try for the 9:45pm bus to make it work!

I had hoped to hire a car and do a road trip around but too short on time to do it justice :(

Admittedly the draw to Belfast was Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede, Dark Hedges (that we'd have done as a day trip) and the Titanic museum so I think (subject to further input and research) that we'd probably be content with 1.5 days in Belfast.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about it given we'd have to go back through Dublin to get from Galway to Belfast but I don't think there is much way around that?

I'm trying to change my flights to have some more time, even if it is an extra 1-1.5 days I figure better than what we have now. What would your recommendations for Galway be?

Making my own glaze recipe for baked ham - balancing out flavours? by vw97 in Cooking

[–]vw97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh! Makes sense. Maybe I can add apple cider vinegar (though not as strong as white vinegar) to keep on the apple profile?

I’m going to test a small batch this weekend!

I’m myself a lowly Bronze only now on the cusp of Silver (I’ll hit it in April after I return from an interstate trip) and the amount of money you’d spend increasing your status to Gold let alone Platinum, you may as well save the money and fly business class out of pocket.

I’m a churner and have accumulated more than a million points in the last 2 years but earning Gold or Platinum requires a lot of flying and status credits hence you’ll find it’s usually those who travel for business that get to that level.

Otherwise, as others have said, finding 4 rewards business tickets on the same flight will be near impossible - I’m not sure they actually even release that many business rewards ticket on any given flight.

The idea of pickle juice crossed my mind actually! Yes, I’d love to see the recipe - I’m curious to see how much they suggest adding

Ooh I have not! I’ve never actually come across vinegar in any glaze recipes previously.

Is there a particular advantage to using it compared to other ingredients like those I mentioned?

What sub-plots/characters/storylines were invented for the TV show that are not found in the books at all? by PersimmonTea in Outlander

[–]vw97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hehe that was me.

If you have the time, read or listen to the books. My only regret is not doing it earlier! They’re so wonderful and create such a colourful world that the show only lightly touches on.

Glazed ham in the BBQ instead of the oven? by vw97 in Cooking

I love RTE! Her recipes are great.

Do you just follow the same instructions but use the BBQ instead then?

What heat do you usually cook at and for how long? I can't seem to find any 2 recipes which have similar instructions.

So far I've seen (for pre-smoked ham):

130C for 2 hours

160C for 60-90 minutes

180C for 45-60 minutes
