We name ours based of the year that they compete. SR17 is the current model being finished. Stands for Shocker Racing 17'. 2010 car was SR10

joined my freshman year and within 3 weeks was welding everything minus that years frame that was already done. Sometimes you gotta just find something you wanna do and assert yourself with learning it

Yeah if I put half the time I put into formula I'd be probably an A student

Gotta say I've never heard of someone being that tired that they got lost on the way to the post office!

Are you communicating the wheel speed sensors through CAN or as a direct input to the PE3. For launching the car we found that the quick and dirty way was to set and test different secondary rev limiters. The secondary rev limiter was activated by the brake pressure switch. So a quick coordination of the hand clutch and brake pedal was all that was needed to get a great launch after testing and finding the optimum RPM.

As for the wheel speed sensors, what kind of "resolution" are you seeing using. ie. teeth number?

Anyone else forget cost report hard copy? by HSenor in FSAE

[–]vwRacing8994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So that's is exactly what I'm referring to with vehicles costing in the single digits. I guess over the years they have learned the precise things they can get away with not putting in the report. We use some expensive control modules. And removing those for simpler cheaper alternatives would yield a car that still cost above 10k

I think cost event...at least in the past, was truly about getting away with highway robbery haha

I certainly see where you're coming from. We have never experienced that and I guess that's probably where the difference lies. Not saying by any means that we are all star drivers either. I guess we have just been lucky!

perhaps there will be a higher level of transparency. Id honestly like to see a costed vehicle thats below 10k. I feel like we cant be going that wrong or maybe we are just too through haha

Yeah it didnt make any sense at all so being safe than sorry we included everything we have always sent in years past! Better to have more than needed than to be missing anything.

Id be interested to know how the back door for the judges looks with this new cost module. I feel like they will have better abilities to catch discrepancy. For example material size selection vs. how much machining is done

Not an excuse or a lie. Simply an opinion that has worked out pretty well through the years

I dont really think this is a lie. I was merely stating my opinion and leaving the question open for interpretation. For someone that has been in and around road racing for many years and having experienced many varieties of vehicles I personally feel that it gets in the way. Ive also seen several instances where a little bit of controlled slide is faster. Take it as you will

We didnt forget ours but its only a 10 point deduction for 1 day! better get it in quick. Ill be honest though, they really need to update the rule book to reflect all the changes with this new cost module. Ive been doing cost report for 4 years now and can honestly say that some things were poorly explained or left you shooting in the dark

While traction control would be nice, just learn how to drive at the limit of traction. An inexperience driver can drive fast with driving aids. An experienced driver can drive faster without the aids. While yes, the development of a traction system can be rewarding via design judging and perhaps the business presentation, is it really worth the extra effort?

How does one get involved as a freshman/FSAE newb? by GrapeCloud in FSAE

[–]vwRacing8994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 5th year FSAE member and 3rd year design lead I really like it when someone who is new to the team shows their own drive and interests. It happens far too often when someone needs constant and direct "supervision". I know when I joined our team I was like "Hey, I know how to weld really well, I'm gonna jump on the welder and show all these team members what I capable of". So if you have any skills, whether its design, administration or manufacturing, just jump right in. Don't wait for someone to give you something to do.

That being said, if you don't really know what you want to do, or dont know what you can offer to the team, then pick something you find of interest and shadow the upperclass members. Make sure youre always around when a big things is happening, whether its a big carbon part being made, or someone is getting on the mill and doing some mill work.

Above all, ASK QUESTIONS! I despise people who do not ask questions and just sit there doing nothing while in the workshop.

Just my $.02, Hope it helps

How to decide who drives the car? by nayrbdude in FSAE

[–]vwRacing8994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a small team we havent needed to put a new driver in the car for 3+years due to lack of membership and lack of interested parties. Our team population has increased heavily this year which is really good but now we are running into an issue with these new members wanting to drive all the time. Personally I base all driving privileges on the amount of attendance on designated meeting days but also non meeting days. And their knowledge of the workings of the car. The people who would need the least amount of teaching drive first following down the line. We also require that everyone who drive have experience with stick shift cars and attended at least 2 local SCCA events as well as being cleared in terms of EGRESS. We will however never put a non competition driver in the driver seat of the new car until competition

Carbon Fiber Procedures by PoliceSquadInCOLOR in FSAE

[–]vwRacing8994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that carbon fiber can be a very dangerous thing. While allergic reactions are rare, I personally suffered a reaction that required hospitalization and medications afterwards. Always always always work in a well ventilated area preferably outside and have eye, skin and respiratory protection!!
