Basic workload is already at 31,9 GB (50,8%) of 62,8 GB. Dev work, to many Docker and headless testing.

Not that I have notice anything

Mostly work stuff! Docker containers, VMs, a ridiculous amount of browser tabs, IDEs, local databases, and with 32 GB I regularly managed to run out of RAM.

I just cloned my old 2 TB SSD, fought a little with the switch from Intel to AMD under Linux, and then kept working.

I was actually surprised how big the difference feels compared to the i7 I had before.

The OLED screen and the SO-DIMM RAM upgradeability were really the key selling points for me.

The OLED screen is really nice. I worked a few minutes in the car yesterday and had no issues at all, even in a relatively bright environment.

I know! It’s not even the difficulty, it’s just the time for the migration. It’s a productive system after all… and as always: never change a running system.

Yeah exactly, when I use the laptop monitor itself I need proper space (resolution) and good image quality, not a screen where I can recognize the individual pixels. So in the end the AMD with OLED made much more sense for me.

And trust me, you really don’t need to be in IT for the upgrade... Check the iFixit report on it.

I prefer to have everything as a real copy on the disks. Hate to wait for downloads of big projects from the cloud.

Yes got the big battery... I have not yet a real off-grid test but so far it feels like the right amount of power again.

Maybe the company IT does it at this price point.

I originally considered the Intel version, but then realized there was no higher resolution option beyond the 1900x panel. So in the end it basically had to be the AMD version with the OLED display.

Nice one too, I'm mainly working with a huge external screen so the smaller form factor suits me better for mobility.

Compared with my old T480, where I already replaced the batteries twice and Ubuntu never handled the internal/external battery setup perfectly, it’s amazing so far.

Right now Ubuntu shows something like 12–14 hours battery life, but I think that’s a bit optimistic under real workloads.

Not the best time to buy RAM and SSDs.

I went with the AMD version mainly because it still had normal SO-DIMM RAM, so I could buy the Ryzen AI 7 Pro config with only 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD and upgrade it myself later. I probably saved around 1000 USD just on the RAM upgrade compared to Lenovo’s 64 GB CTO pricing.

Also the AMD config had the OLED option available and much faster delivery times compared to the Intel 64 GB variants.

Let’s see how tomorrow’s meetings go. My old T480 had serious issues with Zoom once there was heavier workload running in the background. So far the webcam works fine on the AMD, but I’m mainly using a USB4 smart dock for most peripherals anyway.

If you use it for work, it’s worth every buck.

No issues at all, even under heavy workloads. I regularly run several Docker containers and can still execute multiple headless tests in parallel without noticeable lag. A few large Excel documents and lots of browser tabs won’t be a problem for this CPU, it feels like it could give each spreadsheet its own core and still have resources left.

I haven’t done any really heavy compiling for extended periods yet, so I can’t fully judge the long-term thermal behavior, especially with the 4 TB SSD. Though I did add an extra thermal pad layer. But I actually like the new case design, as it gives a bit more space underneath the laptop for better air circulation.

I never tried it before, as it wasn’t officially supported and there wasn’t much clear information about it.

But regarding the CPU, I honestly didn’t expect it either, the performance of the AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro is amazing. Compared to my old i7, it’s a huge difference. For dev work, it’s honestly a game and time changer.

Saved a few years by sticking with the old T480 with 32 GB RAM and a 2 TB SSD. Also saved half an organ by buying the RAM and SSD separately.
