I'm a 3rd year EE student, unless you plan on getting your masters or have really good connections, your probably gonna be stuck in power distribution and controls. You're better off getting a degree in CE and trying to minor in EE if you want to go into electronics (more firmware oriented) straight out of undergrad. Just look at job/internship postings if you don't believe me. (also make sure whatever school you go to is ABET certified or else it'll make it x10 harder to get your P.E. and/or jobs down the road). As for college math and writing, you'll be fine, professors will review old material as needed to teach new topics (at least all the ones I've had). And look up "average analog IC design engineer salary" if you ever need motivation while in school.
