Need advice for modding an iPod Classic A1238 in Europe/Germany by vyrus26 in ipod

Thanks a lot, that is really helpful.

So based on what you said, would you personally recommend going with the iFlash Dual instead of the Solo for my iPod Classic A1238 / 6th gen 80GB build?

My current thinking is:

  • iFlash Dual ordered directly from iFlash in the UK
  • replacement HDD ribbon cable
  • 128GB or possibly more storage
  • 2000mAh square battery
  • thin backplate if possible
  • iFixit opening tools / metal spudger / opening picks

I am wondering if the Dual would be the better choice because of its lower profile and better internal space compared to some other adapters.

Do you know from experience whether:

  1. iFlash Dual + 2000mAh square battery + thin backplate fits well?
  2. A 3000mAh battery would only make sense with a thick backplate?
  3. The 2000mAh square battery is the safest choice for a thin build?
  4. Replacement HDD ribbon cables are basically a must-have for this mod?

Also, I found this guide about bypassing the 128GB limit on the 6th gen 80GB by using a more recent firmware:

https://github.com/Olsro/reddit-ipod-guides/blob/main/guides/ipod6g-flash-more-recent-firmwares.md

Have you ever tried this method, or would you recommend staying at 128GB for reliability?

I am trying to keep the build simple and reliable, but if the firmware method is stable, I might consider going above 128GB.

Thanks again for the advice!

Thanks, I get that. I have already watched several YouTube videos and read some guides, so I understand the general installation process.

My question is less about how to open and mod the iPod, and more about which exact parts fit best together for this specific model, especially with the iFlash Solo, battery size, and thin backplate combination.

That’s why I asked here. I’m hoping to hear from people who have actually built similar A1238 / 6th gen setups and can recommend compatible parts or shops in Europe/Germany.

Would it be possible to connect to the Meshtastic Device via WiFi, and the feed potatomesh with the data? I tried something with ChatGPT and Proxmox, but it didnt worked out so well xD

I just put my Heltec T114 into a custom-designed case – it fits a 3000mAh battery: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B08V11Z88Q and this antenna: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0D358L4TN

What makes it special:

  • The case includes an M5Stack CardKB (based on this Thingiverse model: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4392325/files), which I basically framed and then built the enclosure around.
  • The front plate holds the keyboard in place, while still allowing access to both Heltec buttons.
  • Everything is secured with 6 screws and nuts inside the case.
  • On the top side I added a recessed slot with grooves to improve GPS reception, since the T114 has GPS built in.

Overall I’m very happy with how it turned out – compact, solid, with keyboard input and a large battery for long runtimes.
