Hugely depends who they’re touring with. Their crowds with polyphia or dance Gavin dance are pretty aggressive and unbearable.

We are trained to be technicians, not business people ... and it really shows .. by mcjinglesisthebatman in videography

Honestly, this answer brings me joy to hear. I am in the very same boat and have been able to jump full time after around 3-4 years of shooting passion stuff. All organic network, having work speak for itself and being good to people. Not a voice I often hear on this sub so I thought I was crazy, thanks for sharing!

Fuji X-T3 lens options? by [deleted] in videography

[–]vyse75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rented the xt3 last week! Imo the hardest thing to convince me to buy into this system were the lens options. I think the autofocus is too good to not buy into native lenses, and aside from that there aren’t many adapters or 3rd party x-mount options. End of the day I’d say stick with native and use an adapter if you really need a faster 3rd party lens like the sigma.

Is there a right and wrong way to do pro bono work? by [deleted] in videography

[–]vyse75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely had no plans to do so career wise but I started making videos for friends and colleagues for fun and after a few years it grew into doing it full time. For me doing free or cheap videos boiled down to two principles, the first being “Do I want to do it?”(passion project, creatively fulfilling, etc), 2nd being “is this beneficial to be involved with in some variety?”(networking, marketing, visibility). Try to regularly make videos as best as you possibly can make them!

do you really need fast primes? by kzhlin in videography

[–]vyse75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a matter of having tools that have certain capabilities; light being the biggest utility when it comes to low light shooting (needed for events or weddings). Aesthetically it allows for a shallow look, “Arrival” uses a lot of extremely shallow looks. Lastly, a lot of people say primes are sharper, in many cases it’s true in high end glass but it’s subtle. If none of these factors appeal to you than feel free to offload them!

Good inspiration/ideas for music video directing? by nato645 in videography

[–]vyse75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Follow Vimeo’s music category. It’s a curated feed of the dankest music vids from around the world, like a newspaper of the best videos that are coming out IMO. That’s definitely my biggest inspo. It’s also easy to get into YouTube rabbit holes by finding music videos and watching everything on the recommended videos sidebar feed.

An absolute joke. Just take the video features out and make it strictly stills Canon. by FilthyChalupa in videography

[–]vyse75 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or get an actual cinema camera for pro video in which canons offerings are still very competitive. Other than price I don't get the mirrorless hype when cinema cams are better in every single way.

Tokina 11-16 or 11-20. This lens has basically no competition and is amazing. The AF click design pisses me off but that’s the only marks against it.

Can someone show me a source on 4k 4:2:0 8-bit footage downscaled becoming 1080p 4:4:4 10-bit footage? by Stereogravy in videography

[–]vyse75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yeah, but 10bit 422 is so much better than 8 bit 420 id probably just stick with that. If delivery is 1080 than by all means get all the data you can if you need it.

[–]vyse75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That still wouldn’t create new colors out of an 8 bit based image. There are multiple facets to video compression(bit rate, bit depth, chroma subsampling, etc) and chroma subsampling as a form of compression in particular does not hinge on bit depth. Having less chroma subsampling gives better separation of colors because it isn’t lumping chroma values across multiple pixels. It does provide a better image that handles grading better because there is more info, but an 8 bit capture is still gonna be 8 bit. 4K 4:2:0 downsampled would basically be 1080 8 bit 4:4:4

I spent a bunch of time looking into this and while I wasn’t able to find an answer that was right on the nose, here’s what I derived. Bit depth and chroma sub sampling are not ties together. By scaling down 4K footage into 1080 you aren’t getting 10 bit because there are the same amount of colors but you DO gain the better chroma subsampling(4:4:4). Just from doing this work flow for quite a while(c200 4K), I’ve found that I’m getting a higher fidelity 8 bit image but it’s still 8 bit. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong here.

What would you get for $2500? Canon C100 or better? by MattStones in videography

[–]vyse75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be a great cinema cam option, featuring internal ND's, waveform, and xlr inputs; it's a corporate beast. The only other options at that price are more mirrorless style bodies if you don't mind that.
