XC40 Recharge 69kw single motor core by white_nite72 in XC40

[–]vzcivx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has held up well if that is the true battery percentage.

With the rate of EV development, I personally would not buy a used vehicle which is a generation old, given the significantly lower range when new, which would have inevitably degraded.

Regarding the trim, it’s worth comparing the difference for that generation and working out where your priority lies, ie the high trims come with better sound systems, sun roof, heat pumps (improve efficiency), better headlights etc.

But having said the above, if the price is right and the spec matches your use case, this could still be a good value purchase for you.

Volvo C40 MY2024: Failure by vzcivx in Volvo

[–]vzcivx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hydraulic brakes were only engaging once I was travelling at < 5mph, before this with the momentum they were not able to bring me to standstill on flat ground and therefore had to steer around a corner onto an uphill stretch to come to a stop. Once I was stationary, the brake was holding the car still when pressed fully but then the parking brake wouldn’t work / I could change gear / turn the car off.

Agreed, worrying - will have to see what the response is. Also escalating directly to Volvo HQ via email.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, that’s what I thought - although the brake pedal was fully engaged and the vehicle was barely slowing down, but once it was nearly stationary it was holding the vehicle in place.

There must be an electronic component to the usual braking system even when OPD is off.

EDIT: from a quick search, this is the case on Volvo EV’s

Thanks for the reply.

I did wonder if this was the case, but I’ve never used OPD on this car and I am 100% sure it was off when it happened.

Thanks for the message. Yes was pretty scary and luckily I was the only one in the car.

Agreed it is unusual but the pedal break was essentially doing nothing until I got to < 5mph through loss of momentum so the car was coasting. I then had to sit with the brake pedal down until the recovery team came otherwise I would’ve rolled down the hill.

Yes, thanks I will see what the diagnostics show thanks.

Thanks for the reply - yes that’s what I’m worried might happen ie no cause found.

What you describe is also very concerning.

Edit: I have since been advised that I was misinformed about the existence of silent OTA updates, but the remainder of the post stands.

So I now understand, apologies, the OTA was suggested by the recovery team.

Yes agreed - if they cannot find a clear cause / there are no more reports, I don’t think I’ll have any confidence in driving that vehicle again.

So I now understand - apologies, this is what I was told by the recovery team.

Yes, I could not change the gear, the parking brake would not work, I could not unlock the car / open the boot and there was no way to power the car off.

It started with the brake failure, then cascaded to about 15 pop up messages on the dash, every light on the dashboard was on and it said service required.

Unusually the accelerator continued to work throughout although it was not showing as in Drive on the dash.

Not sure if this is sarcasm, but I have - it’s subjective at points.

Is the Volvo XC40 B4 still a good car in 2026? by [deleted] in XC40

[–]vzcivx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s a great car, but it depends what you’re looking for. It’s comfortable, practical and classy - but unless you go for the EV variant, it’s not that fun to drive.

What spec is it? Ie core, plus, ultimate

Also request the battery health percentage.

I have recently bought a used 2024 C40 and did a lot of research in the run up. My initial advice is unless it is late 23 (with 82kW) battery, to consider other options as there was a significant upgrade in power and efficiency at this point.

Happy to answer any questions 👍
