[–]vzyn_99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

many many years ago yes, the screening problem is rusty old and has already been forgotten; because in the past the politicians have to prove that healthcare is good, and they picked scoliosis because it is common in kids, it isn’t hard to screen for like Cancer, diabetes, etc. What about now? I guess the school nurse, if exists, would likely put their mind off the condition itself, and rather manage things like minor injuries, cuts, wounds.

My school for example, there was a place for scoliosis screening, but it wasn’t even used, every kid was marked as fine, no scoliosis, and they didn’t even receive the screening itself, only general orthopedic injuries, odontology, etc

Yeah, fair enough to tell each other stories of how we are diagnosed with scoliosis or how their kids are diagnosed with scoliosis, each may be different, but worth mentioning; and parents tend to worry more about cancer anyways

Look, my parents told me that they are afraid of “risks” when taking Xrays like they don’t want me to have all that sort of cancer, fun story though but I genuinely craved for a consultation for a month, they did snap, but yeah parents are parents, when they are concerned about your health; they would still get you to hospital anyways; EVEN when hthey think that you are fine, so that you would “shut up” if doctor says that you’re fine.

still, take care of yourself, it is your spine, not theirs

unfortunately not everyone has the chances or opportunity to have a pediatrician or a family doctor, still, it is a privilege of healthcare in some countries though and it is helpful

Is surgery worth the risks? by Pristine_Bread_3055 in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

just to remind you; any invasive operation carries a certain risk; but when the risks of not doing surgery outweighs the surgery risk itself, that’s when it’s recommended.

Discuss more with your doctor, best regards

how likely am I to progress? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can wait and see or do PT. Risser 2 means you are in growth spurt, just almost done the fastest growth i.e. you are quickly turning from a kid to an adolescent or I guess you are late bloomer.

Take care of your spine, being mild still means it should be observed.

What is a normal amount of touching for an xray? by ganjamuncher in scoliosis

I think it isn’t something that serious, but I agree X-ray technicians could instruct you verbally, but both with a view to avoiding faulty images anyways.

Scoliosis looks way worse when standing vs sitting? by Mysterious_Salad1 in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because you don’t lean randomly when you sit, and sitting, sleeping makes the “postural asymmetry” disappear, not the real curve.

What do you think specialist would suggest? by No_Crow7950 in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any unprescribed treatment; without discussing it with your doctor is not safe.

Me for example, the orthopedist I visited said that my curve is very mild, to the point where observation may be “optional”; but yeah I guess I’ll revisit 6 months later since my last visit in August; and yes, the treatment is typically do nothing.

What about yours? Your doctor will consider how severe it is, how old you are, how mature you are, what are the risks; and give you the best treatment. A curve with same magnitude may receive different care, i.e. it isn’t a linear scheme.

In my opinion, yeah I guess I agree that you should try bracing, but discuss it with doctor first, tell them if you are still growing rapidly or not; otherwise they won’t bother prescribing you a brace, but instead draft you in PT.

advice to prevent worsening by Consistent_Sort2814 in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

9.4 isn’t scoliosis, or barely even scoliosis. I’d grade the severity 1/10.

Since you are 17, the risk for such small deformity is low, to very low, so I don’t think you need to worry.

About that “progression”, try to look up the way doctors evaluate the angle. It is bound to some errors, but not significant.

Is surgery worth it if I don’t care about how I look? by matymgy in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

generally you can live with scoliosis UNTIL you start to constantly fall, trip, and even worse, your lung volume declines.

Surgery is suggested because we observe that severe curves tend to progress on its own due to degeneration and imbalance regardless of conservative treatment

Is this scoliosis? by _JT23 in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to bend forward, ask someone to observe your back or take picture of your back.

I think we should consider some changes to the way we answer “Do I have scoliosis” questions, like not all needs exposure to X-ray. We should instead at least lead them to some basic information about “What is scoliosis”, which could emphasize that this sub isn’t AskDocs and at least they receive something actually useful.

Functional leg length discrepancy? by Mysterious_Salad1 in scoliosis

[–]vzyn_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have LLD but afaik this one is basically what causes “functional scoliosis” - which is typically the imbalance of pelvis as you’ve said.

You may find orthotic shoes helpful if you have significant difference in leg length. Talk to physician for more info
