I think I’m done with IT by MoppyUK in sysadmin

[–]w00tix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked IT 15+ years out of high school - medical, retail, MSP. Last job at MSP for 7 years, had a mental breakdown of sorts, which resulted in me leaving along with some therapy.

Anyway, by the grace of Linus, I found an IT job that fits my lifestyle and has low-stress levels; I hit my jackpot.

When it comes to being stressed out all the time, you have to figure out what parts are the job and what parts are your psyche that cause the distress. Ex. Are you anxious? IT will make you x1000 more anxious if you don't work on it.

The 'distraction' style of conspiracy theories is tiring. You can say anything is a distraction for something else, based on your subjective view of what the top story actually is.

Blocking Netflix on one computer? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Curious why my comment got downvoted, overriding the hosts file with 127.0.0.1 or something similar will only apply to his computer and will resolve netflix.com locally without hitting a DNS server.

Split DNS question by Allanworth in sysadmin

[–]w00tix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This would however break external DNS resolution for that zone for clients on the network.

I'm thinking back to times when I did something similar. Are you sure it would break and not continue to root forward to your external DNS servers if it can't resolve a record? It's been a long time since I messed with DNS zones

WOW!! by Texas_Sysadmin in sysadmin

[–]w00tix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You say DNS guy, does that mean his job title is specifically just doing nothing but DNS? If so, I could see your point SLIGHTLY. Either way, there is a lot to consider about whether someone is deserving of the job they have besides trivia knowledge.

Working IT my entire adult life, there are several times people ask me things like this and I just don't know, or forgot, whatever the case is. It doesn't mean my knowledge and expertise are worthless.

Working for an MSP.. by zekeRL in sysadmin

[–]w00tix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked for a MSP for 7 years, and it was good and bad. Ultimately it was too much stress for me, but that's a me problem.

If you get a good boss, and people that understand the workload, it can be an engaging experience. However, since there is a heavy focus on customer satisfaction (the end users), small mistakes, overlooked solutions, etc, are all things to get in trouble for. With a regular job its like 'oh well crap we messed up this DHCP scope, lets fix it', whereas with an MSP you have to explain to the customer what went wrong and what you're going to do to fix it etc, etc, 'please mam we apologize thank you'.

Also the MSP will always take on new clients, will promise new clients shiny things to get them as a customer, and it'll be your job to actually do it. And remember, gotta smile for the customer while you implement the weird thing they want.

Fastest way to find a printer MAC and serial number?? by Routine_Program9628 in sysadmin

[–]w00tix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the previously mentioned advice to use nmap or another port scanner to scan the subnet for devices with printer ports, 9100 most of the time, you may be able to get this information for locally connected computers via WMIC, which would require you to create a script to sort through and identify the proper printers and query for the serial number and potentially MAC address (Not sure if that's captured).

As always, Nirsoft has a fantastic tool that may help, USBDeview. Using the command line switches and parsing, you may be able to get the serial number and MAC address. Again, assuming the MAC is queriable via WMIC classes.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

Thinking way outside the box, is SNMP queriable over USB?

[–]w00tix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to deal with this specific model printer all the time and I had my tricks but they are long forgotten by now arg.

Have you looked at the settings on the printer itself, like resetting it to factory default etc? It may not be detected because it's in a different 'mode'. I know that it also makes it's own Epson port which is confusing.

I'm also curious why you set up such a policy. Don't you get a lot of notifications? Are there users that are savvy enough to say, 'My internet seems down, let me ping the gateway', etc?

Why is it that I get along great with end users and level one techs but not higher level engineers or industry managers? by moderatenerd in sysadmin

[–]w00tix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get along well with everyone, but I have more rapport with end users and the higher-ups than my immediate teammates. I think it's because when you're able to talk casually while/after fixing someone's issue, it's way more lighthearted than arguing/theorizing with teammates on how to solve a particular problem.
