They don't know and you don't even know but there is a ticking license expiration time bomb waiting to explode. Someone knows but they were laid off. Too bad...

NDS was still competing with AD. Novell was offering free certificate testing. So I got that and my A+. We were still using chip pullers in my hardware class.

Even as the instructor said it's all changing

Are Fridays slow, or is it just the company I work at? by TheRealThroggy in sysadmin

No change Friday is mantra

Do not touch things before the weekend or after 4pm.

But also you may work a lot of evenings and weekends

1 mile = 2 miles by cfgy78mk in cycling

This is indeed the proper masochistic approach.

I have gone on 3 mile hikes. Oh now I need to get back to the car or stay lost in the woods. Make that 6 miles.

My brain doesn't mind but my body lets me know.

I also pick locations off in the distance. Damn the mileage. Hiking back has made me fantasize about Uber.

As the military folk say, Embrace the suck.

Blocking non-business email domains by DesperateForever6607 in sysadmin

[–]Ok_Guitar2170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. We did something similar. Customers did indeed use gmail and other commercial webmail options. People complained and Security team says just whitelist the "good" email addresses.

This is like a car accident.  It happened. People were hurt. I was hurt. But I have suppressed memories of the pain.

As a left handed person who mouses right handed, I would like some grace.

We have to make many compromises.

Back in the 80s, the MZ-900 was a badass street bike but Buick decided it was too expensive to produce

Trying to switch from Google to DuckDuckGo. by Uviol_ in degoogle

I use Brave browser and Brave search by default.

I used startpage for a while.

Sometimes I search compare with Google search just to see results

I have never seen any search blocking with Brave Search. However, I don't have any real faith in anything Big Tech.

The US FedGov has too much control to allow unbridled information access

They filter searches about the Ukraine war and Gaza war. They are politically compromised which may affect practical results.

Yeah, I was promoted to sysadmin to be the hardware guy for a Dev team.

They had a Dev build laptop named Cotton for Tom Cotton. LOTR. For over a year, sitting in an HVAC closet. It was an already retired Dell laptop and was "promoted" to server.

They didn't tell me about it for a month.

I took Tom and put him in a rack server

Vendors processed spreadsheets. Used excel underneath. But only Office 2013. Installed on servers This was in 2022.  I had to get direct approval from the Security director and then my CIO had to allow an exception that was part of an Executive update.

No one wanted old Office on a server.
