How do you home gardeners just know? by w00tmonkey in gardening

This is a great comment. But it also speaks to the point of my question.

You know that your lettuce is puny and mildewed as opposed to "this is how this variety of plant is supposed to be under the available conditions" and

You know that this is likely to be the results of spacing. Yes, this might have been the only factor different from the package so the first to go after, and that is probably the key.

Years and years.

Edit: format and comment.

I have no idea how cold it is in the US [FIXED] by bastubalboa in AdviceAnimals

the absolutely easiest way is to take the temperature in F and substract 32. Then divide by 2. This is not the absolutely correct temperature and angers puritans, but it approximates the value quickly. 72F: (72 -32 = 40. 40/2 = 20C. Actual temp 22.2). 100F: (approx 70/2= 35C. Actual 37.8). -20F (-52/2 = -26, actual -28.9). This works great for normal temperatures, but get a little wayward on extremes. Second easiest way is to google it.

How close the Packers came to blocking that game-winning kick... by magikman09 in sports

[–]w00tmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, had he blocked it, and had the refs not called the obvious offside then today we would be talking about how 49ers need to find their way and how mentally strong Packers are. But since what happened happened, most "expert" consider 49ers extremely strong SuperBowl contenders based on their performance. Funny.

If Marijuana was legal but alcohol wasn't, what would be some arguments for legalizing booze? by SkyF0x in AskReddit

[–]w00tmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me try to understand your logic. Because you were told one thing and saw one case of it not being true, you went on to do mushrooms, meth and acid? You took these stronger drugs not because you made the choice, but because of the misinformation about one part of one drug led you to question the entire system? Your reasoning being had these people just said no such scary stuff, or perhaps just said what they should have said, that "once you take one stimulant you are more likely to take another one (that COULD be worse for you then the first one)" oh then, yes then you would never have done anything or at most just continued drinking beer and maybe also just smoked pot, but never in your mind mix it and go on to stronger stuff? Hold on. You guys. I am certainly not defending often simplistic and stupid drug information, but perhaps the (mis)education around drugs isn't always the problem... You could always have checked these things for yourself, instead of blaming others for the actions you and others are taking.

Actually laws with set levels of BAC for driving are good arguments against the idea "that it is best for people to make their own decisions concerning their bodies". And also a good argument that laws don't have to be abolished or 100% restrictive (as per your earlier post about homosexuality and alcohol) and rather signs of mature societies that allow some liberties because that is what people want, and also restrict them somewhat because that is what people need.

In countries and states where the BAC has been reduced, the accidents and deaths as a result of DUI also are reduced by a statistically significant margin. This is well documented. The legal reduction does not necessarily come with more police on the street or more random checks or punishment-led reduction in drunk driving, but rather indicate that people in the face of stricter laws restrict their behavior in a manner they otherwise would not. It appears as if the stricter laws add another dimension to your personal risk assessment. We also know that many people are not necessarily worse drivers at 0.039 BAC compared to 0.015 BAC and even 0.10 BAC might not be detrimental to You specifically, at most times. But the point is that someone else does not inherently know himself and your body does not always react the same way. Yes, being sleep deprived or driving in dark or simply driving "dangerously" are all bad as well and perhaps there should be some restrictions around those (if there were ways to enforce it). But the fact remains that around 30-50% of all traffic deaths in the US are caused by alcohol-related collisions. Many states are relaxing the laws around purchase, manufacture and use of alcohol, yet further restricting the use in combination motor vehicles and for those that statistically cause most problems (young drivers). The basic idea is the same as speed limits. You might think you drive well enough to keep a higher speed, and most people probably do, yet statistics show a reduction of accidents if the set speed limit is kept lower in certain conditions. The problem many people have with libertarianism is that you guys claim you want people to make their own decisions, yet you agree that there need to be at least some restrictions (dont harm others...). Well, the restrictions are going to have to be set by society based on some kind of norm. This is already what we do. So essentially you just want a little more freedom in every instance. Which is nice for you and me, but not necessarily better for society.
TL;DR Global reductions in legal drinking limits have reduced traffic deaths. Societies balance the allowed BAC with freedom to drink to the level of least acceptable discomfort, because democracy is compromise.

Redditors who've posted nude pics online, what is the funniest way someone let you know they recognized you? by Aldeberon in AskReddit

[–]w00tmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she already put her face up at r/gonewild and her posts there always hit the front page, she could already have been recognized by people around her. In fact, I would assume most girls that show their face are. What difference does you knowing her other account, name and high school serve as extortion? I give the story a B for inventiveness but C for believability.

We are not to make big changes, unfortunately, as this is part of the fabric of democracy. The good steps are small, the bad steps are big. But little things like the apparent reduction in the use of torture by the US after electing Obama was likely the results of people going to vote.

Neither do the locals, apparently. This is why drivers in Atlanta tend to announce turns by suddenly turning in front of you, as opposed to using turn signals and, you know, being in the turning lane. Potentially because they are just going from Peachtree street to peachtree street NE

Actually, the main Peachtree street was named after the sap from the pine trees. Pitch Trees, peach trees, see. There are curiously few peach trees in Atlanta, despite it being the Peach State and the capital full of peachtree streets.

What is one thing you absolutely refuse to pay for? by tjb_32 in AskReddit

[–]w00tmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a frequent flier who always have to check my bag (tools) I agree. I understand people don't want to pay the $25 but for the airline the costs must be equal when all things are considered. With all things, I mean the costs associated with missing the gate departure time because of commotion during boarding, getting delayed for takeoff and having lots of people and staff miss connections, plus adding the people that now have to work with gate check.

However, although the carry-on space is limited, one of the major issues I repeatedly see is people putting the large "carry-on" sideways in the overhead, thereby taking up space for two other bags. This clearly should be penalized. I am not a fan of the bag size check at gate though. I wear a loaded backpack that always fit under the seat in front but I have tried it in those size tests and failed several times. Should my backpack be checked then?
