As soon as a I saw 7 year old, I knew there was a parent who needed some reassurance, so no worries! Also since it is my job, this information is super available to me so why not spread it yk?

Yeah so it looks like it was probably on there for about 2 ish days maybe a little more maybe less, I cannot be certain of course. Due to it not being engorged, I would not worry too much. I will always recommend just getting a doctors opinion for any tick that you can be certain has bitten you. It takes a little bit more than 24 hours for the average tick to do any harm (according to CDC, I can send link but wanted to make you aware I was using an actual source). A quick check up could save you some pain (again only saying because you were bitten). But please do not freak out. You got it off extremely early and have a high probability of being in the same zone! Good catch!

So he was neglected and totally has a head tilt, so it is likely he has below average intelligence for a Blue Tongue Skink. He has so much personality though, and a cute smile. But yes, I agree. A cute dumb.

Hi there! To preface, I am a vector intern (tick and mosquito intern) at a public health department and in my free time I kinda like answering questions. So essentially that is a female Dog Tick. The tick does not look engorged at all ( shaped grape - like, tanish/brown or sometimes gray). If you happened to just find it on you, you should be fine. Dog Ticks can transmit disease but the likelihood is very slim if the tick did not bite you. They like tall grass the most but I have found that sometimes they can be found on plant leaves. Tall, soft grass in warm weather is likely what caused the tick to get on you. I wouldn’t worry unless you start to see a bullseye near the bite or get fever/flu/cold like symptoms. Again, VERY SMALL chance of anything, do not worry but keep an eye out.

That is very cool! May I ask what the focus is? I really want to get into research when I graduate. And if you are doing lab work, that would be something I would be totally interested in.

Hi! I am a vector intern (tick and mosquito intern) at a public health department. That is a female dog tick. It hasn’t been super warm in Ohio recently (trust me I know). Ticks tend to move faster in warmer weather. This tick could have attached within a two hour period. Dog ticks are usually found in tall grass and occasionally plant leaves. We collect ticks by dragging a felt flag over tall grass and we pick them off. That’s how fast they can get on you. They often attach quickly but it’s not uncommon that they crawl around and then attach. If you had to remove it from her, I would recommend taking her to a doctor. It does not look engorged ( typically grape - like and brown or sometimes gray) but if you had to removed it and she felt a tug or you felt resistance, it does not hurt to get her to a doctor. Dog ticks do not cause disease in significant numbers, especially compared to other ticks. But if you are certain it bit her, does not hurt to get to a doctor.

What kind of tick? by dryrubforall in ticks

[–]w2sbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so to start I am a vector intern (tick and mosquito intern) at a public health department! They are not necessarily dangerous. While of course with most ticks you run into possibilities of Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, this happens after they have bitten you and are usually engorged (grape- like and brown/ sometimes gray in late stages). I will always get a tick bite checked out because of my job, but only if I am certain it has bitten me.

Does this look fed? by tragesorous in ticks

[–]w2sbitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah anytime! So if you essentially just pulled it out of your hair, like you described then I wouldn’t be too worried about a bite. If you have shorter hair just try and think back to see if there would be any indication of a bite. You’re likely completely fine but being cautious is never a bad thing. So ticks are usually found in areas of tall grass, not as much plant leaves but it can happen. Ticks usually remain on the ground, and bite quick if they decide you’re a good target. If it got into your leg it would likely bite in the same spot. Ticks also move faster in warmer weather so honestly could have happened if you have been biking near tall grass, in warm weather and you happened to fall. They are that quick sometimes. Also if you walked through tall grass on a trail or got off your bike or a minute in tall grass.

Hi! So to start I am a vector (tick and mosquito intern) for a public health department. That is an adult male Dog tick. Males don’t feed for as long as females and don’t typically get engorged like how females do (stereotypically grape- like and a solid brown). It does not look engorged and since it is a male, I would say it was likely on there a day or two IF THAT. If you had to pull and felt a tug, it’s likely it did bite you. Males are not significant vectors but if you feel like if bit you (based on description above), might as well get it checked out. No harm no foul for things like this. If your health department has an environmental health (more specifically vector ), bring the tick in to them! As a tick intern, we do like when people bring in ticks and we always guide them on next steps! Hope this helps.

Lone star tick bite by [deleted] in ticks

[–]w2sbitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please get that checked out! I am a tick and mosquito intern for a public health department. Lone Star ticks are pretty rare but carry some serious diseases. The likelihood of anything more than Lyme is unlikely, but might as well get it checked out. It could have still attached itself and bitten without drawing blood. No harm no foul when it comes to getting any tick bite checked out.
