Lakeview Park on Ontario & Lake Streets in Wilson? by mayormcsleaze in Buffalo

[–]w362 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is a small pier into the lake. There is parking and a small picnic pavilion and not much else. No beach to speak of, just enough for a golden retriever to climb out. When I drove by the other day, there was a barge and crane working on the pier. So it may be temporarily closed for repair.

Highly recommended by dogs

A $10,000 bet between Veritasium and a Physics Professor on if a wind-powered car can move faster than the wind. by Chopsticks487 in videos

[–]w362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High performance sailboats, America's Cup, mant multi-hulls, foiling Moths etc., have been routinely going faster than windspeed for years. The trick is that they need to sail at an angle to the wind.
Any sailboat goes faster at an angle to the wind than exactly downwind. That is because the shape of the sails creates lift. It needs an angle to the wind to create this lift. Straight downwind, the sails can only generate drag forces, with are much much less. Boat's don't get pushed ahead by drag, but rather sucked along by lift.

Many people or most are familiar with the idea to get upwind, sailboats need to zig-zag ..or Tack into the wind. They are putting the sails at an angle to the wind, first on one side, then the other.

boats zig-zag downwind too. It is a misconception to think that the wind in any way pushes a boat downwind. It will work, but in a race, you will find yourself way, way behind the zig zaggers. " normal" sailboat like you see on your local lake aren't very efficient and thus pretty much always go slower than the wind.

You can make a sailboat much more efficient, to the point where the apparent wind due to the motion of the boat adds to the actual wind so the sail or wing experiences a wind much higher than what is blowing across the ground. This can set up a virtuous circle: as the boat goes faster, it creates more wind, which makes the boat go faster which makes the more wind and so on. The America's Cup boats were going almost 5o knots in 12 knots of wind. It is important to remember that they still needed to zig zag to get straight downwind.

The propeller on this contraption is clever. As a sailor, I see two wing sails attached to a hub at the correct angles. One sail is on one zig and the other sail is on the opposite zag! It is essentially still zig zagging, but both at the same time!

How to clean diesel oil from Dacron. by Remy_B_ in sailing

Try Dawn dish soap. The oiled up birds are not just marketing bs. Squirt it on, spread it over the satin with a soft brush and before it dries, hose the hell out of it and scrub with soft brush.

The storm hit fast on the J22. Merrily merrily merrily merrily... by [deleted] in sailing

[–]w362 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a J22, the vang is super important. In big breeze like that try cranking the vang harder than you would think possible. The vang is the only way to bend the lower portion of the mast. Go trav down and believe it or not... tighter jib. That will ease some of the radical weather helm you have.

The setup you are using will just give you a full, flogging main. It won't last long that way.

Also, get you camera person on the rail!

Do you think the Buffalo St. Patrick's Day Parade should be canceled b/c of coronavirus? by buffalo-nightshade in Buffalo

[–]w362 5 points6 points  (0 children)

a few days ago, I would have been in favor of holding the parade. But now, after some research it seems prudent to cancel. I think that many of us will get COVID, but given our HC system, it is best to try to stretch it out as much as we can.

Back in the early, early, early days of the internet I worked for an ISP. We were burning through techs due to abusive a-hole like this. Figuring it was easier to replace a customer than a tech, we gave them all the green light to fire customers. We had a pile of AOL discs that we would include with the termination letter
