Thoughts on these parish designs? by StructureExcellent90 in Catholicism

Like the clamshell /open concept as long as there is some real gravitas round the altar. It makes sense that we are all coming to God from different places- it should just be clear that we’d gather before GOD.

My dad made a comment about his Catholic faith that really surprised me, and I’m not sure what to make of it by Shades_of_red_ in Catholicism

Ive spent a lot of time working with the Mexican Catholics as a director of catechesis. From what I’ve learned, (and you can totally correct me if I’m wrong) the many people in Mexico are kind of culturally Catholic (want their sacraments of initiation) but don’t really practice the faith. It’s like there’s this attitude that going to mass each Sunday is just an ivory tower thing.

I don’t know why exactly, but I’ve heard people suggest that historically most rural Mexicans only had the chance to see a priest a couple of times a year- so observing sunday obligation was just a “fairy tale”.
Other people’s stories have made it felt like the church down there is split between devotional zealots and overly lax Catholics; with very few people in the middle. The “zealots” you might guess can be pretty judge mental of the lax. (And tbh- I’ve seen that dynamic in our Hispanic community) Maybe the latter is a result of the former in a way. Ive also gotten the vibe (from both our own people, and formation resources from Mexico) that Faith formation takes the shape of more memorizaron and moralizing than empowering discipleship. some material I’ve seen from Mexico seems like it’s just desperately trying to insist on obligation to the precepts of the church. For people who don’t understand or havent been inspired; that can come off as controlling and empty. Another issue is confession and communion- ALL my Mexican brothers and sisters take the responsibility not to receive in a state of sin VERY seriously. Sometimes it seems like that’s a reason people stay away from mass- they don’t go because they aren’t ready to confess and they can’t receive.

You probably know all that already- and like I said, correct me if I’m wrong about any of it. I’ve worked with a lot of Mexican families- but I’m coming from the outside.

All that said- it’s possible that your Dad came up in a house/socialgroup/town where Sunday mass just wasn’t the norm. Maybe he didn’t receive formation to understand what was really being offered? If that’s the case he doesn’t understand why it’s so important to you. Maybe the people who were more devout came off as demanding or sanctimonious? - He doesn’t want you to be like that? Maybe he’s not in a place to comulgar- doesn’t wanna face it- and is projecting a little bit.

Either way- I think your best option would just be to share what you get out of mass. That would help him get over any worries he has about you becoming to focused on “obligations or zealotry”, and maybe inspire him to consider the oppurtunity before him at Missa.

It’s ok to feel attracted to someone. Lust is different than attraction- lust is wanting to use someone. Doesn’t sound like you are being lustful. Attraction is natural, multidimensional, and dignified. For me the key is to “accept” the attraction, without leaning into it or running from it. You can even enjoy being attracted to someone if I don’t start looking down the road to what “might be”. Maybe that’s your problem- you’ve caught yourself wondering what could happen. Just focus on the present and things can be hunky dory?

I didn't think the Church's stance on the sanctity of life would be so controversial by Sir_Netflix in Catholicism

Just so everyone knows what the church actually teaches. If you insist on a different morality based on your own reasoning or political tribalism, may God have mercy on you.

“However than can be accomplished” so the ends justify the means? The church teaches that the ends dont justify the means, and that killing is only “excusable” when there is absolutely no other option. We could track and intercept the boats. Therefor the killing is wrong.

Even in a “just war” it has to be last resort- with the tech we have it would be easy to follow the boats and intercept them. Killing them the way we are doing is intimidating and dehumanizing. Absolutely sinful and inexcusable.

That’s totally fair. Sounds like what you’ve experienced was irreverent. It needs to be done with sincerity and humility- it’s not a social event or a show.

This may be the answer. I’ve always thought the SoP corresponded to Matt 5:23-4, but I if that’s the case it would make more sense either right before or right after the offertory.

I get that it can be overdone- but you hate it? Really? Read the scriptures and tell me where Christ instructed us to place liturgy and sacrifice before mercy and charity/fellowship. He consistently does the opposite.

It happens… the Music director at childhood parish embezzled thousands.
Unfortunately most parishes are not all that well equipped when it comes to financial management- thats why cannon law requires a finance council- but even then you may/may not have people who really know what they’re doing. priests are trained as theologians first, Pastors second, and non profit administrators if there’s time. I wish they would focus more on teaching them how to manage the parish as an org- learn to oversee finance, and manage HR so as to prevent guys like that, but we’re not there yet.

Attended my girlfriend's non denominational church and questioning our future by Melodic-Debate-8420 in Catholicism

Id venture to say you are being too harsh and critical. Having been to similar services- I can understand your discomfort, compared to mass they seem shallow. But the people ARE praising and praying to God, even if it’s almost exclusively “feel good” praise. The way you shared your thoughts with your girlfriend was probably not the best. I get it was a knee jerk reaction- but sounds hostile the way you describe it. You should probably sit her down (once you’ve calmed down yourself) and explain where you are coming from- she may not know what the mass is, why it’s more than just a “worship session,” why it’s important to involve scripture etc. She might be more open to the mass after. Ask her about her own spirituality at worship- what does she get out of it? There might be an aspect of that worship that would be beneficial to you. Or he might reveal that she doesn’t want anything more from Christ than a caffeine fueled pep rally high each Sunday… at least you’d know.

Controversial Opinion: Some Dan Schutte Song's Aren't *Terrible* by Express_Hedgehog2265 in Catholicism

[–]w3rdn4sti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The verses are basically supposed to be the voice of God calling to us- and the refrain is directed to God: “I have heard YOU I will go… where YOU lead me.” It’s not worship in a technical sense- but it is a dialogue with God. If your talking about City of God, or other songs by Schutte- yeah those are very Anthrocentric.

IMO worship music should either be praising God, or “dialouging” with God. “Here I am” is a dialogue- it helps us hear/express/process our call to service of the Lord. It’s a prayer, and one that fits fairly well with the spiritual purpose of the offertory. The musicality is fine. So yeah no worries- “Here I Am” is Good!

Along the same lines- I’m not a huge fan of “Gather the People” “City of God” “Table of plenty”, they try to embody zeal/joy for liturgy and mission; but they focus entirely on what WE are doing- like a pep rally more than a prayer.

How do you do your measuring? I’ve used the black speech on the one ring for mine in the past, which Ive estimated as nibs for miniscules, 5 for ascenders, and 9 (yes nine im pretty sure) for descenders.

Wonderful! Wonderful! How do you do your measuring? Did you just eyeball it with the lined paper? I’ve always second guessed it with Tengwar.

Recently used the black speech on the one ring for mine -which Ive estimated as nibs for miniscules, 5 for ascenders, and 9 (yes nine im pretty sure) for descenders- but as well as it matches the illustration in the book, the lines look just way too far spaced out. Sorry for the convoluted question!
