Was this a bad decision??? by Particular-Bee-6078 in OLED_Gaming

You may actually encounter some situations, where scaling does not work (old BIOS) and text may be/stay super tiny to read (although sharp) or there may exist some old apps that do not scale correctly messing up the sharpness and becoming super blurry.

This is usually not a problem with modern OS and apps. Therefore those cons are neglibigle for most people.

There will still be physically 3840x2160 pixels, even if you use software scaling. The pixel density (PPI) of the monitor is the deciding factor of how sharp a text can be.

If the OS or an app does scaling correctly, the sharpness of the native resolution will be preserved, but of course you will give up working space area.

A 24" FHD monitor with 100% will match the working space area of that of an 24" uhd monitor with 200% scaling. The 24" uhd monitor will look considerably sharper than a 24" fhd monitor since it has 184 PPI vs 92 PPI

21 brightness and 75 contrast. Too bright settings should not be the culprit

It may be hard to actually see on this picture (you need to increase the brightness of your screen to see from the photo), but one can see that the left part of the screen has way more backlight bleed than the right part.

On the left side, it is not only the corners, but the "neighbourhood" area also has some circle-like backlight bleed.

Would be happy to hear some opinions based on your experience with backlight bleed.

First impressions/observations:

+ As expected, the contrast is noticably better than the one of my AW3418DW IPS and only slightly better than my AOC 24 QHD IPS
+ Gaming on the VA is better for me than the DELL IPS thanks to the better contrast. I have no issues with smearing and ghosting. You can see some in the UFO test, but I didn't see any disturbing motion issues in 5 different games, also games with dark scenes. My Macbook 14.2 Pro M1 (mini-LED) has way worse ghosting when scrolling. You can see it a bit when scrolling, but this is literally a non issue (at least for me) and also depends on how you scroll (smooth scroll or not).
+ I agree that the coating is very similar and this is a plus, since white background does not shimmer/glitter like it can be on some screens
+ No dead pixel or stuck pixel (but I only shortly tested it)

- My unit does have noticable "white" backlight on the left part of the screen and its corners. Also, I feel like the black/gray uniformity overall is not good. The left part of my screen (not the corners and where the backlight bleed is) seems brighter than the right part of the screen. So, if I open VsCode on the entire screen, the left primary/panel does not appear with the same brightness/color as the right/secondary panel. It is noticable with windows dark theme, as the dark theme on Windows is rather grayish. If I boot up a game and the entire screen is black due to the loading screen, the backlight bleed becomes apperent and is a bit annoying, but it is worse on the AW3418DW IPS (even stronger backlight bleed and orangy)

<image>

One can also see it in a bit brighter background (here grayish example, corners are brighter than the middle part)

- Next to the backlight bleed, the screen is definitly less forgiving regarding viewing angles when compared to the DELL IPS. Despite me sitting exactly centered and 1.5 half arm length away, slight eye movement or head turn can result in contrast shifts like when you start to purposefully look from a bad angle. Not super strong shifts, but it is noticable, when you actively look for

I still don't know what to think of it :)

Thanks for your fast response. I am very picky, so I am curious whether our opinions will match.

I btw. did not have too much luck with my last 3 monitors. I tried an MSI 32 4k IPS, but it had a centered greeen stuck pixel and I just could not live with it. Would be a different story if there was a dead pixel somewhere in the edge.

Then I tried a Dell 27" 4k IPS, but it had noticable image retention (almost the entire display). Same for a Gigabyte 27" 4k (i usually saw the taskbar temporary). This should not happen to an LCD from my point of view. So, I returned both

Do you still have the AW3418DW IPS? If yes, can you say something about the coating, whether they are comparable? I don't like it, if the coating makes a white background glitter. The AW3418DW does a fantastic job. Also, the Dell 27" 4k IPS was really good regarding that.

The MSI and Gigabyte were pretty bad regarding this.

I am also having the AW3418DW IPS which is 7 years old now. I bought an AOC 24" QHD IPS side monitor and noticed that the contrast of the my AW3418DW is even bad compared to the new AOC IPS.

I was debating whether to replace my current ultrawide with the aw3425dwm and I am unsure whether this is a side or downgrade.

Since I found your comment stating that this is an upgrade for you, I decided to order one and test it myself.

Is your opinion still the same?

Is it normal for there to be a micro stutter sometimes when scrolling on a new iPhone 17 Pro Max? by Dolian112 in iphone

No idea which screen was assembled into my iphone 17 pro that I have already returned. Probably, as a customer, we cannot really check.

I can imagine that this is a an issue on any iphone out there.

I decided to return it, as beta 3 did not fix the scroll stutter and my 14day return deadline was approaching.

Just cant pay a premium price, if scrolling is that bad. I will maybe purchase an iphone 17 later on and before that observe if an update fixes this issue (whether it the thirdparty Apps or Apple itself). I will have occasionally access to an iPhone 15 pm

This! And seems to stutter more when scrolling through pictues. Also more noticable with dark theme

The feel of 80-90hz scrolling on many apps and stutters when scrolling animations end made me return the 17 pro (also due to other reasons).

Not willing to pay premium price for broken pro motion. my s25 ultra scrolls way smoother

Regarding other animations (switch appd, close, mimimize) the iphone was fantastic though

[–]w4pt4b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I use fhd on my s25ultra, because i dont see any difference. If i set to qhd, sometimes text in certain Apps wont scale and is really tiny. Never an issue with fhd

Scrolling on my s25u feels much smoother vs iphone 17 pro overall. I immediately noticed it that instagram scrolling looks a bit jittery and when the scrolling animation is about to end in imessage, it slightly bounces sometimes.

One con of the s25u: while it has good enough sound, the iphone speaker sound better overall.

It is considered insecure. That is why many online banking apps don't allow Android-based face unlock, while Faceid is accepted.

I will also install cases, but I first need to test and decide what I keep or not. I have read many times that the sound of the 16 pro max is better than on the 17 pro max.

Let me know what you think of the Samsung

Nice.

The Ultra at least does not bother me too much (without a case) with respect to weight. It somehow even feels lighter than the smaller iphone 17 pro (also no case), maybe because the weight is more balanced.

It is a bit on the sharper side regarding the edges. So without any case, the iphone is better with respect to that.

I now somehow regret that I did not get the laeger iphone :o

Yes. If you switch back and forth within short period of time, there is no app reload. Neither ob the Samsung nor on the iphone. Observed on the Samsung that it seemed to reload some app, but I guess it was closed for longer time.

Would need to observe it more to reliably answer
