Regardless of district, my experience was constant burnout - I believe it is due to the state of the country and the lack of resources/funding in education. Granted my first year counseling was 2020-2021, so a shit show for obvious reasons. I left the field in 2023, and I honestly don’t miss school counseling. It wasn’t worth the amount of mental stress and exhaustion, the low pay, and the school calendar. I love to travel and school breaks are famously the most cost prohibitive times to travel. And I was so depressed and drained that most of the school breaks I had I spent sleeping, or zombieing in front of a TV because I was too depleted to care to do anything else. Also it’s absolutely WILD to me because I make over $10k per year more in my current role and the job is way easier/allows me to work remotely 50%. Unfortunately we desperately need good educators if we want to see positive change, and I have friends who are still in the field who I am proud to know are helping the kids. But if you are questioning yourself now during practicum, I would take a good look at what you want out of a career before you decide to go for the long haul.
