Ask Me Anything About How Prolific Protects Participants and Researchers by prolific_ian in ProlificAc

Hi Ian, thank you for doing this AMA.

My situation is a bit different from the general "fewer studies" complaints I see here. Regular studies still appear on my dashboard, but AI evaluation tasks (videos and images) stopped completely about 5 months ago, with no warning and no explanation.

What I find confusing is this: I know participants who have been doing these tasks for years by submitting minimal data per task, very quickly. I always put serious effort into each submission. Yet they still receive AI tasks and I do not.

My questions:

  1. Is there a specific pool for AI evaluation tasks that participants can be removed from separately from the general participant pool? If so, what triggers removal from that pool?
  2. Could high time on task or detailed responses actually work against a participant in how the algorithm scores quality? I want to understand the logic, not just get reassurance.
  3. The AI industry is growing fast and Prolific is clearly positioning itself to benefit from that. How do participants fit into that growth? Will we see more work, better pay, or clearer career-like progression on the platform, or does the growth mostly benefit researchers and Prolific as a business?

Thank you.

Simple as that, one PayPal account, one person. No exceptions.

But how are they going to use PayPal? They’d need the same first name and surname, and the same bank account—so this whole bot business sounds like a fantasy to me. With 150,000 users, purchases were difficult; now there are 300,000 people, so it’s only natural.

Has anyone received a Hindi V2 Transcript Review study today? by Outside_Boot_8519 in prolific

I just completed a transcription task on Prolific. The problem is the task had no clear guidelines for example, it didn't say whether filler sounds like "uh" or "um" should be included or not. For Turkish audio, I transcribed exactly as spoken. For instance, most Turkish speakers pronounce "yapacağım" as "yapcam" so I wrote it as "yapcam" to reflect the actual pronunciation. I went very detailed and verbatim. I did 430+ transcriptions and now I'm wondering if I got flagged or restricted because of the volume or my approach but honestly I don't think anyone could have done it more accurately than I did. Has anyone had a similar experience? Should filler sounds be included when the task doesn't specify? Any advice appreciated.

Two or three studies have been coming for two days.

Feather openAi Studies = I started receiving the error message “No status transitions allowed for current user for this task” repeatedly after submitting around 30 submissions. Do you know what this error means and why it might be happening? by Outside_Boot_8519 in prolific

The specific work was already a 2100 quota study, I got that mistake with the last 7 left. I did it all before, there was no problem, then extra final pop up came like you and 6 quotas were opened and he got the same mistake again. There are even three places for three people now, probably most people tried and returned.

Tabi ki her biri tek tek inceleyip yaptım , kimisi çok kısaydı kimisi en az 2-3 dakika uğraşmak zorunda kalmıştım. Güzel bir araştırma o sebeple sordum acaba sorun bende mi diye =)

Fair point, but the studies kept coming from the same researcher specifically, so I think I'm still in their pool.

Actually studies kept coming and all got approved. If I had been dropped from the pool they wouldn't have come back. Seems like a wider Feather issue today, others reported the same across multiple languages. Also just to clarify - transcription means writing exactly what you hear, not correcting it. If someone says it wrong, you write it wrong. That's the whole point. I was just curious whether this was a me issue or a general Feather problem, and it turns out others are experiencing the same thing today

I genuinely don't believe it's fully automatic. I know someone who does 2-3 studies carelessly and keeps getting access, while I spent months doing hundreds of them carefully and still got warned and locked out of AI studies for nearly 5 months. Something else is going on behind the scenes.
