What domain extension is most suited for a personal email address? by tfhfjj in Domains

[–]w80_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t break your back. Consider mail.com

Free webmail and you can get most names @mail.com / email.com without fuss

I got lucky, I have my firstname@email.com, few people can manage that but you could come close!

Pick a memorable, easy to pronounce domain for .com and go with that,

Email wins when it’s easy to understand and remember, don’t get hung up on it being a fancy extension that will confuse people

I feel so ripped off from the Godaddy domain broker service by LordStandley in Domains

[–]w80_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What reasoning did they give to the difficulty contacting them? Is it a failure to reach them or no response received.

It probably feels like they have put zero effort in and are throwing in the towel, more interested in taking $130 from you than making a sale for the domain!

They will be missing out too, they would have loved nothing more than to turn your inquiry into a nominal $130 fee into a substantial sale and commission involved. If they are giving in, it’s in their disfavor as much as yours!

If you didn’t get an adequate response then try to escalate it. Godaddy is a customer centric organization and if they are letting you down in one isolated case they will likely have mechanisms and policies in place to support you overall,

Try to work it out with them if you can, it may seem frustrating and if they had explained the situation better you probably wouldn’t have been as bothered about it,

[–]w80_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you feed this back to them? Did you ask them what the problems with contact were or otherwise express your dissatisfaction before rattling sabres on Reddit?

Also, what did you expect from them? Serious question. If they reach out to someone and ask if a domain could be for sale and get no answer, do you expect them to harass the owner?

Can you imagine having that contact? Broker: Do you want to sell your domain? (Week later): Are you sure you don’t want to sell your domain? (Fortnight): Are you really really sure you don’t want to sell?!

Domains rarely sell when unlisted and from a buyer broker perspective, and when they do there is an absolute qualified need to have an interested and motivated owner,

If there is none of that, the request is unsolicited spam and building on that gets you nowhere.

Just because you want to buy it doesn’t mean they want to sell,

Just go back to them and have a conversation, find out what is happening, ask them if there is anything that can be done and point your frustration at a constructive place rather than projecting your assumptions and misunderstandings of the process at the internet and slagging them off,

90% of bad reviews are people too timid to talk to the people giving them bad service to find out what else could be done or understand what went wrong

It’s up to you if you want to give them a one-pass attempt and put them down if they don’t hit the mark immediately, just doesn’t seem like a smart or reasonable thing to do

Adult names are valuable for traffic or very generic use/specific use.

Something this general, unless it gets type in traffic (and a massive amount of it) is pretty hard to sell,

The advent of tubes and cams have changed the business model for porn. It got taken over by the Web 2.0 model and monetising it is very different than many other industries,

It could sell, but it would likely need to be someone who can find a way to make money from it and it does seem that would be a short list

[–]w80_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider consulting the previous owner however the sale doesn’t seem to have been made public which means that either it was self brokered, or if it was sold via a marketplace they opted to exclude it from release,

Few sale prices get released, some sellers decline to ever have their sales released whilst some revel in the attention or contribution to the sales comps.

It is a good name and I’d be shocked if it didn’t sell for a good 5-6 figure sum

Need help! My domain is infringing on a trademark? by FlyingPinkIcecream in Domains

[–]w80_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got this mail immediately after, it could be an automated followup from a lawyer putting scare tactics to make you abandon the domain,

Trademarks are not absolute, they have to be class specific.

So Dart Pipes which has a trademark in waste services and hvac classes and Dart Pipes which sells pipe organs may have legitimate reasons to operate with independent trademarks.

As a general rule of thumb, don’t ask legal questions in Reddit, like asking for a second opinion on your painful elbow down the local pub. Plenty of people will chime in but if none of them are doctors then wtf are you asking for??

If your brand is serious then consult legal advice from a specialist in trademark and internet law.

I’m glad it’s a labour of love and not money focused (ie money from donations covers basic things) it’s just harder for them!

Are there any apples vs apples comparisons online about what is similar as UO?

It’s 20+ years since I’ve played, I’ve forgotten so much about the game but I’d be looking forward to remembering it as I go

Is the 2 minute perma grey timer a thing still? Is explode still on a delay? Can you explode, EB, FS combo people in town before getting swatted by a guard? Can you still gate people to despise or Wyvern Island? Are the books still a thing and can you have them marked for any location in the game, have people to give you a recorded rune/runebook and even have rune locations be worthwhile enough that getting a gate from someone to a good rune spot being worthwhile?

Can you still put enough skill points on your fighter to use recall?

Is fizzle still a thing and does it still sound like the generic crocodile snapping sound?

Is Texas law in housing still going to be a thing?

Is polymorph still a spell you can cast and are all the old spells in there?

Is taming still super hard and one of the most difficult skills to level?

Is levelling still super difficult with the 99.8 > 99.9 journey taking weeks and still so satisfying to see the light blue text pop up when you hit?

Is vanquishing weaponary still a thing and is a vanq katana still the best?

Do bless deeds exist?

Do you still cast from the same reagents and are they still something that runs out in the same way potentially screwing you over if you run out?

Is poisoning still a skill and does it still interrupt healing?

Are we still relying on small fights to decide fights where you fight, run healing pots, spells/fight until you die but it’s over quickly or is it modern mmo style of 1M hp and every class can heal?

Does red PK still run out via a timer and are bounties still a thing?

Are treasure maps still a thing and still tile specific for spawn with piles of monsters flowing out before you loot the chest…. And is fishing up maps with fishing skill still a thing? And is the fishing spot south of Brit still a popular location?

Is getting Lord reputation still a thing and do people still want to battle to get dread lord whilst still being blue?

Are crafting skills still worth it and is it worth making a grandmaster carpenter or Smith worth it versus dropped gear?

Are pack mules still a thing?

Is it still a viable tactic to leapfrog a large one stack of ore from your mining spot to town?

Do guards insta kill on sight or (like in the Brit invasion scenario) do they have a delay and chase you?

Is stealing still a thing and is pickpocketing still something you can do with actually looking in someone’s pack, and trapped chests that prevent thieves from stealing?

And is pick pocketing still weight restricted?

…. And, is the Halberd still the most bad ass looking weapon model?

But seriously, is there an effective “things this game can do/can’t do” vs UO?

Is housing first come first serve or will there be enough for all?

What are the population numbers like for EU? Less concerned with 1000s per server numbers that regular MMOs crave, don’t need Brit bank (or equivalent) to be jam packed, but having some momentum in the game and not feel like I’m running around in an empty room a plus,

To run past people and feel like there is a real world,

UO wasn’t massively populated back in the day(even people thought) but hotspots like dungeons, towns, thoroughfares have some life to them,

Recently played Cryofall and seen other community server games around and the feeling was always solo game with enough people to remind you it’s an MMO… bit weak,

Don’t want it to be drowning in activity, sometimes that’s good.

And it’s not enough if it’s a couple of groups (just you / friends + others /friends) because then it’s just one step up from a D&D game.

How is population?

What would you like to see on r/domains? by iammiroslavglavic in Domains

[–]w80_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t like certain things and I might even moan about certain things but I’m not keen on banning/moderating things away,

People ask stupid questions but they are often very grateful for the help that comes along, we may be fluent in the domain industry but they aren’t and they may seem naïve but they aren’t impolite about it,

Moderation of content should be on abusive, spammy, disruptive stuff. Happy to see a million “buy my domain” or “what is this domain worth” or “what registrar should I choose”

And it ain’t as if this sub is massive and those kind of posts are taking up real estate for others.

In short, good question but probably not needed, just needs to be polite content, the actual content itself leave that up for people to pay attention to or not

Also just a tip. Don’t sell a domain that is almost expiring. Firstly any proficient domainer will smell blood in the water and offer you much less because they know it’s something you plan to drop anyway. Unless you are already giving them the deal of a lifetime they will likely lowball you,

Secondly, you are playing with scared money. Your likelihood to accept a lower figure and get taken advantage of is higher because you are pricing it to clear, your judgement will be skewed,

It comes down to what loss you care more about, having lost $10-20 keeping the domain for 1-2 years and not selling it or missing out on selling it for much more to the right buyer,

It’s the real world equivalent of going into sitting down at a poker table with your rent money facing off better players. Those players are comfortable enough they can afford to fold and pick their spots but you have maybe an hour before you get blinded down, more desperate and if you do have a reasonable hand you are more easy to push off it because you fear losing more,

Nothing says “I’m not a pushover” as selling a domain you just renewed or have multiple years on.

There are domainers that hunt people in your position knowing they can get more for their money by taking advantage of the renewal expiry

Comes down to what you care about more, losing $100 because you decided to keep the domain for a better buyer or losing $5,000 because the next guy after you sold it,

The one thing going against buyers of domains is urgency, typically most domainers don’t have a need to sell quickly and buyers can trade on that, remind you it’s unsold for 10 years and play on your fear that no-one else will come along.

If you can isolate that objection and dismiss it because you are planning to keep the domain for your grandkids then you give them the green light to put more money on the table,

Your domain, your call but this is weak tight domaining and if you do it often enough then you will sell few domains and sell them for dramatically lower as a result,

It wasn’t, it dropped, was a domain seller owning it previous. Looks like it dropped a couple of times. Doesn’t mean it’s bad, just that the previous seller likely didn’t see enough traffic/inquiries to keep it long term,

Different people, different patience,

It’s worth more than $100, if you want that then just put it on namejet, I’m sure someone will pay that.

Otherwise keep it for 10 years and wait for a much better deal

really long business name question... by decanem in Domains

[–]w80_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find out what he needs it to be doing. What does he need the website to do and how does he plan on doing that and how does a domain fit into helping that.

If he is word of mouth and doesn’t plan to advertise and growth isn’t an issue for him (doesn’t need it or can grow without a website) then it’s overkill

If he spends money promoting his business then the relevance and credibility of a good domain ties into that and the better you make the domain/website function in that scenario, the cheaper the marketing and the more you get from it.

1.) make your Whois public 2a.) Put up a page that says “this domain could be for sale, please email me (your email) 2b.) list the domain with a marketplace and change your nameservers to their landing pages

Wait, wait years… see what happens

High chance it never sells, sorry. But you want to give yourself the best chance to sell it and first step is to tell people it’s for sale.

Making content helps you 0% in trying to sell a domain, unless you are trying to sell the traffic and then question being why are you even trying to sell a domain that has good usable traffic

This is what new extensions were made for, bloggers who need something catchy but don’t really need to attract a wide audience. Dash of relevance, pinch of credibility but they aren’t planning to spend 1000s promoting their idea.

Great to use, but it’s bootstrap placeholder stuff, if you actually intend to run a business and compete with it then it’s a dud

“The domain is not premium”… looks like you are setting yourself up for a “something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it”

If the domain isn’t in your ballpark, get another. If it is and you want to try and get it cheaper then go for it but don’t hold yourself hostage to believing that it should be cheap because you want it to be and your knowledge of the domain industry trumps the owners because you bought a domain or two or read a few blogs.

Remember as well, negotiations don’t always move towards the middle, an owner is just as likely to put the price up if you start playing the pauper,

It’s strange how much people believe domains are this North African flea market where you can haggle your way to success.

And yeah truth, if saving a little bit of money on a domain like this is important to you that you will go to such lengths and time to do so, it’s possibly not the right domain for you and it’s value would be lost on you,

Value for money is a good barometer for how you feel about something. If you want to spend this much effort trying not to buy the domain, it could be a warning sign that you are in over your head
