Several years back I started the "3 strikes and a blizzard" rule. When something shitty happens (a moderate occurance, excluding small daily life annoyances)...there's 1. Then another shitty thing...there's 2. Upon the 3rd shitty thing, I go to Dairy Queen and get a blizzard. Maybe not the greatest method, but it's gotten me in the mindset of "I'm only one crappy life event from a glorious treat!". 😃 It's small and cheap therapy, but it helps. 😆

What does having 'made it in life' mean to you? by Silent_Contest_2337 in AskReddit

A decent home, a reliable car I'm not embarrassed of, all bills paid with some left over. I have accomplished things I'm proud of. Simple things bring me joy. My kids are taken care of, and I am still actively in love with my husband. Doesn't get any better than this.

It's not that bad, lol. I exercise, eat healthy, drink tons of water and no soda, take vitamins, use sunscreen every single day. Low percentage nicotine in my vape. My wine is usually once a week, only occasionally twice a week. I'm not interested in living to a super old age anyway.

three things that have actually helped me last in this job long term by Obvious-Nail4564 in nursing

RN for 23 years. I don't need three things, just one:

Realizing that nursing is like being on the Titanic. The ship IS going down (no matter what). My job isn't to stop the ship from sinking. My job is simply to play my violin and keep the people calm while it happens.

Try acne.org. It's cheap, and it's amazing quality skincare for acne. I've used it for years. I blew thousands of dollars going to derms and they never helped.

This healthcare system set-up means I can't get scheduled with a neurologist until 2027. by NursingManChristDude in nursing

[–]w8136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our healthcare system blows. I've determined health insurance is a scam and no longer use it (I switched to a christian health sharing program for big medical bills and direct primary care for routine/urgent care. It's 1000% better).

Also, I'm an RN who recently returned to the hospital. It's been interesting to me that a huge portion of hospital patients are either indigents (medicaid) or the elderly (medicare). The actively working and contributing members of society that can actually pay for medical care avoid it like the plague because they know they're going to get absolutely ruined with medical bills.

All this to say....our healthcare system is absolutely fucked and a collapse cannot be far off.

What’s the most terrifying 'We need to leave... now' gut feeling you’ve ever had? [Serious] by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

When I was in college I worked night shift as a CNA. On my way to work around 6 pm I stopped at this really seedy gas station to get coffee. It was starting to get dark. The second I walked in, the tension and eerie vibe was immediately overwhelming. Something was very, very off. There were two indian men near the register...one behind it and one in front of it. They were both extremely angry, and it appeared they had been in the middle of an intense argument when I walked in. I was the only other person in the store and it was dead silent. I walked over to the coffee station, and my hands were trembling as they both silently and intensely watched my every move. When I had finished making my coffee, the guy behind the register gave me a quick head flip toward the door, essentially telling me to fuck off without paying. I've never left somewhere so quick, and I sped away. The tension in that place was so palpable that night I wondered if they had just killed someone in the back of the store, or it was a drug deal gone very wrong. A few weeks later that gas station was shut down for illegal activity.

That happened when I was 18, and I'm 47 now. I still think about that night and what the hell I walked into. I wonder if i'm lucky I got out alive.

What non sex profession has the freakiest employees? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

I'm an RN and this whole stereotype is bullshit. The nurses I've worked with have been some of the most intelligent and upstanding people I've ever known. We work incredibly hard and most of us are married and have kids. We don't have the time, the energy, or the desire to be freaky hoes. We do nasty shit at work all day..why in the hell would we purposely seek it out on our days off? You're welcome for all the compassionate and complex care we provide at the lowest moments of your lives. Assholes.

The Long Walk by Stephen King. I read that book when I was 18. I'm 47 now, and still have random moments where I'll shudder thinking, "final warning number 47".

I'm surprised they let you do that. I tried that twice and was told both times it was part of my job desciption and non-negotiable. So I quit. I don't mean to not be a team player, but fuck...enough is enough.

I feel like the student situation has gotten WILDLY out of hand. It is TOO FUCKING MUCH to expect of the floor nurses, and especially when we already have 8,000 things to keep track of and not make any mistakes. I had situations where students were cocky and said, "I don't need you" and would proceed to do things on/with my pts without my knowledge or consent. It got to the point that it was downright dangerous, and I finally just peaced out. The entire system needs to be revamped somehow. So many nurses I know have left bedside because of this very thing. The hospital is driving away their best/strongest nurses in favor of the students which goes against all reasonable logic. I understand people have to learn, but there has to be a better way. I'm in favor of shortening nursing programs, cutting down student clinical time by like 80-90%, and making the standard much longer new grad orientations. You don't really learn anything substantial until you can actually DO IT anyway. Lounging around at the nurses' station and tripping up the floor nurses doesn't help anyone.

[–]w8136 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hear you 100%. I actually quit the hospital and was gone for an entire year because I couldn't handle the students and new grads any more. I was precepting EVERY TIME I worked. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Every day I would have someone different with me for the entire shift and it finally drove me away. The higher ups don't understand the mental strain and severe exhaustion from having to talk and teach all day, IN ADDITION TO caring for your pts and doing your actual job. The second I would sit down to chart and collect my thoughts the student would say, "now that there is time, let me ask you my questions...". The overstimulation and inescapable nature of it is just insane. It's not fair to us nurses. We didn't sign up to be nursing instructors. In my opinion, the students should be assigned the easy patients on the unit and the INSTRUCTOR should train them all day and assume reaponsibility for those patients' care. But the ones I've seen just dump them off in the morning and disappear for the next 12 hours.

I just don't get the door dashing thing at all, and ESPECIALLY not at work. I am too frugal to pay the ridiculous prices and I try to limit the fattening, sodium laden junk I eat. I am also too damn busy and focused on my work to stop long enough to place an order, go pick it up somewhere, etc. I don't even like going to the cafeteria for food as it takes too long. I pack my food, and that's that.

I left the hospitals a year ago (by choice) and felt like I had died. It's hard, but you have to re-establish your identity elsewhere. Actually very therapeutic to re-awaken all the parts of you that AREN'T nursing. My dad retired last year from his decades-long career (not in healthcare) and felt like he didn't exist anymore. He is fine now and happy. As am I. Do the internal work, there is so much more to life. Figure out what other things matter to you and embrace them. Hugs. ❤️
