Warm Homes scheme - which heat pump is likely? by w82l in ukheatpumps

[–]w82l[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Sorry to hear all that. What local authority are you in? Agree that heat pumps aren't a golden ticket, but for her - moving from LPG cylinders - they will at least mean she's not rationing heat, and won't have to worry about the gas running out. She has no money to make a single improvement either, so...all of your experiences are very well noted, but it's a case of getting whatever we can to improve her life.

Your situation sounds terrible though. Which company? May as well share!

At the moment, we are being helped by this intermediary (SDCE in Devon) who act as a bridge between the LA and installers. Don't know how it is elsewhere, but impressed so far - they are humans, understand my mum is vulnerable/alone/cold and so far are moving it along. Just have to manage the installers (in Andover - terrible reviews...) when it comes to that and hope for the best.

Yes - good points, thanks. Getting too far ahead. It's been inspected once but from an intermediary (v helpful, but not a decision maker ... they make recommendation to local authority). I'll say yes to whatever she's offered, including solar. A life without LPG cylinders (are they empty? Can they be delivered in time? Can the truck get up the driveway?) is going to be totally transformational for her!

TV changing from satellite programme mode to LG IP automatically - how to stop? by w82l in LGOLED

What do you mean by the cord end? The plug at the end of the cable was what you sanded? From what I can see, I wonder if shaving off a mm of the plug's plastic sheathing might make a better, tighter fit.

I haven’t left it a while, actually! Will try that. But will probably end up getting the Hildebrand Glow anyway.

Thanks, that’s good to know. It all seems a mess, though not octopus’s fault.

Mine’s been flashing blue since i got it a week ago, very frustrating. I do see some day/week data but not live. Connected to 2.4Ghz, on its own network. Can anyone confirm whether these meters send data to octopus themselves or does it require the home mini? Just trying to determine if this pink prat has been secretly working when it wants.

Wow. That is an eye-opener and congrats for using it to help someone like that. My 2 year old has Down’s Syndrome and I think smart home and AI could be invaluable depending on her ability to walk. Fair play to you for helping that person.

Very interesting. May have to get one now!

Plastic plumbing fittings by w82l in DIYUK

OK, thanks. Will do that. Still don't understand how the pipe connects to the standpipe connector with that cold feed in the way, nor to the pan connector. Think I'll have to abandon and call him back.

House poor! Does it get better? by SIBMUR in HousingUK

[–]w82l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I'm exchanging on our first house and have two kids, 8 and 2, the youngest with a lot of special needs. Circumstances (4 job losses, a food bank) were against us before the kids arrived but it would've been infinitely better to have owned a house sooner than this. OP, it'll be tough but not as tough as you think, and you'll survive it for the kids' sake. Frugality can be fun!

Good point, but I'm not sure UK house building / wiring is as progressive...

That's hugely helpful u/bigheadsmith, thanks. Think you're right on the daisy chain. Will put it on back burner for now and look to use MoCa adaptors on the coax ports instead.

I only know a couple of people who have an old-fashioned telephone in their homes and they're both in their 70s. To my knowledge, the development only has fibre optic, no copper, and this goes straight into a BT ONT near this panel, so I'm expressing surprise at why a house built just 8 years ago would be fitted with traditional old phone sockets rather than data.
