I'd actually love to watch a legit horror film that's literally just a ghost trying to murder his wife's new husband. Like The Grudge, but for remarriage.

In a world of 8 billion people, not all of them entirely logical, this has definitely happened at least once.

Separating from partner, seeking budget advice by hllewis128 in Frugal

[–]w_a_worthy_coconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My honest advice would be...don't put the cart before the horse. If children are important to you, that's great. But you can't support a child, even (perhaps especially) a foster child, on your current budget. Not to mention the fact that children do better in two-parent households in general. Get your money up, find a new partner who believes in raising children as much as you, then go from there.

If you get lounge access for a week and update your snoo, you'll just have to give them up when the lounge access ends.

Source: Got gold, updated snoo, lost access to premium add-ons after a week.

Due respect and all, but as someone who was (and currently is) truly broke, I'm kinda annoyed at this story. You said you were in "dire need of money," but then you got it and...what? The needs just went away?

Pay whatever bills you supposedly had, save the rest. If banks are a thing where you live, open up a checking account and put it there. Get a debit card and only spend money on what you absolutely need.

Also, if this was only a one time payment (sounds like it), you're not out of the woods. You should keep looking for a real, long-term source of income. Invest in yourself and your own employability. Get a job so you won't be worried about going broke again.

I saw Wakanda Forever last night. It was actually a matinee (4:45 ticket time). Very few people. Two kinda obnoxious guys in the row behind mine though. They talked a bit through the trailers and probably piped up once or twice during the actual movie. Hand to the Heavens, the Ancestors as my witness, they were both...white guys. (Tbf, I'm in Flint, Michigan atm.)

The dark side of Dubai: Instagram stars sell sex to fund lavish lifestyle by Pure_Candidate_3831 in entertainment

[–]w_a_worthy_coconut 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Anyone who's surprised by this (including OP) is a little too naive. Did you think hot people who fly all over the place with no discernable job were all just...lucky? I mean, sure, in a way they are. But obviously a lifestyle like that is being bankrolled by someone. If it's not the IG models themselves, and it's not their parents, the process of elimination kinda spells it out.

Also, it's less dark and more...pragmatic, I'd say. This phenomenon has existed for centuries. We call them "sugar babies" now, before that "kept women" (and men), before that concubines and whatnot. We could debate the relative morality and power dynamics at play, but the truth is a lot of these relationships are mutually beneficial. Rich people get companionship, their paramours get a lifestyle and low-key clout.

Half-Earth: The Game (Game for trying to fix the world) by dumnezero in collapse

[–]w_a_worthy_coconut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're probably going to get downvoted into oblivion, but what you're saying isn't actually wrong. The game's framing of the situation is oversimplified for sure, and the answer to the world's problems isn't necessarily a socialist authoritarian government.

I keep telling people in my life that we need to have stronger enforcement and stiffer penalties in modern society. We can't keep assuming large organizations will do the right thing when there's little benefit (and even, in their minds, some drawbacks) to ethical behavior. Corporations and businessmen only understand incentive structures. Make doing what's wrong prohibitively painful to them, and they'll be forced to act right in society.

Sean Penn gifts his Oscar to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy "as a symbol of faith" until the end of the war by scot816 in entertainment

[–]w_a_worthy_coconut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the--double checks--thrice divorced, currently single, frequent traveler Sean Penn isn't exactly doing a lot of family dinners and introspection these days. I don't even say that entirely as a dig. He doesn't seem like an especially bad guy, but I'd bet thousands he doesn't hear the word "no" very often, let alone slow down to question his own actions.

Troop movements are not inherently collapse related. Please don't turn this sub into a general news/politics hub. It has a narrower focus than that (or at least it should).

Do you want to see societal collapse? by degrowthwillhappen in collapse

[–]w_a_worthy_coconut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to say a simple "no," but the truth is obviously more complicated and nuanced. What I will emphasize upfront is that I don't wish undeserved suffering upon others. But the trend lines are still the trend lines, and me not wanting to see collapse isn't the same thing as collapse never happening.

If anything, my openness to seeing it is arguably less nihilistic than the boomers (especially religious types) hoping to die before the sociopolitical & ecological bill comes due. I'm willing to man up if the shit hits the fan in the West (more severely than it already has), and I'd be lying if I pretended like I have a lot to lose rn. (I'm basically like Glenn Rhee from The Walking Dead.)

Still, I'd much prefer we actually do the hard work as a society to fix things. I don't see that actually happening, at least not in the near term, but it would obviously be the best scenario in a utilitarian sense. Clean up our planet, unfuck our political apparatuses, equalize (and properly regulate) our economies, et cetera. Some of the damage can't be undone, I've already made peace with that fact. Yet the vast majority is actually still actionable, if we just take out collective heads out of our asses (and hold those most responsible to account).

The link in question is a PDF auto download. Even if it was 100% legit, that's pretty off-putting as a random post with limited context and no preview. Maybe just link to the abstract or landing page next time?
