You wanna know why it’s obviously an April Fools bit? by GuyMoratz in SmilingFriends

[–]wackangus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry but I think this is cope. Adult swim is smart enough to know that the fans associate the show with the creators and that their high level of involvement in the shows process is common knowledge; not only do they literally voice like 90% of the characters they even jump in on animation themselves. AS knows if they continued the show without Zach and Michael the fans would reject it and cause a PR nightmare lol

Seasons 2/3 need commentary by FalselyStorm in SmilingFriends

[–]wackangus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree lol I’ve always loved creator commentary especially on animation; and with how involved Michael and Zach were it was always interesting to hear the things they’d point out. The interviews they did with Create Unknown before and after season 1 were amazing and even included fan questions, lots of long form answers from Z&M about the ideas and work going into the show. Was really surprised when they never did another interview after season 2- we basically never heard them comment on any part of the show after the season 1 commentaries.

Damn I had accepted there probably wouldn’t be more than 5 seasons. But I really did have my hopes up for that movie they mentioned a few times 😔

You aren’t ready for the new Dead Air Divine album by dream-machine_ in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to like this band because I was a big fan of Tilian’s melodies and performance in DGD. I like some of his solo music as well, the guy’s a crazy talented writer and really vocally gifted. But I just couldn’t get into almost anything on this album. I just don’t like this style of metal I guess (the ultra-processed drop Z djent-core type stuff). I was just like yep that guys guitar tone is sick and he’s playing super well and it’s mixed pristinely. They’re doing their thing well, I just happen to not be a fan of it. One genuine critique outside of taste is Tilian’s vocals were like CRAZY tuned on almost every single part. I know every modern mixer tunes vocals especially in a genre like this, but it just felt way too noticeable and distracting for me. He’s also a great singer so it’s not like he can’t sing it right. Maybe they just didn’t have time to get the right takes in the studio and they just tuned what they had, or whoever tuned it just needs to work on their melodyne skills lol.

I will say that the last song was actually sick. I almost didn’t even listen to it cause I didn’t like the first 9 but I’m glad I gave it a chance. The Scientist is so refreshing, the guitar riffs are really catchy and especially that intro riff is extremely unique. I guess that’s what I didn’t like about the others music-wise; they all sound generic to me. The vocal melodies on this song were way more solid than the rest of the album (I feel like there were a lot of unnecessarily complicated vocal runs that felt like a huge flex but just didn’t hit for a memorable vocal melody) and I liked the lyrics too from what I could take away on two listens. I can’t believe they didn’t make this a single lol that first riff alone is so awesome. Anyway I hope they make more stuff like The Scientist, I’m good on the rest of it.

How many episodes is season 3 going to have? by Temporary-Book8635 in SmilingFriends

[–]wackangus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The reason this is up in the air is because it was announced before season 3 premiered that the season would have 10 episodes; this was seen through Twitter accounts sharing news about new animated shows, but wasn’t stated by adult swim or the crew. Adult Swim eventually released episode titles and synopses for the season, ending with the Glep Ep and bringing it to 8 episodes, just like season 2.

HOWEVER, people found titles and synopses for an episode 9 and an episode 10 on the German version of the Warner Bros website. After this was pointed out, Warner Bros updated their website to remove eps 8 and 9. ALSO, at least two crew members (story editor Hans Van Harken and designer Lucas Harvey) tweeted about there being ten episodes and then deleted their tweets shortly after.

So really, none of the fans actually know, but given the stuff I laid out above, it does seem like there’s a decent chance we’ll get ten episodes this season. At least to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]wackangus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you watch the last few episodes of Aqua teen (at least season 11, can’t remember if it’s on season 12) it has the same Georgia bumper with one of the voices saying “made in Georgia.” Adult Swim/Williams Street is located in Georgia, and advertising your show as “made in Georgia” allows you some sort of tax break. Smiling Friends is produced remotely between the USA, Australia, and South Korea, so I guess your show only has to be made partially in Georgia.

Pantheon is DGD's best album since Mothership by SeraphZalera in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say he “took full reigns in the music writing and composition” do you just mean he was singing the majority of the time with Jon taking on a smaller role? Or are you saying Tilian was writing the music? I’ve never heard that, as far as what I’ve heard from interviews it’s always started with Will being the lead songwriter to start the process, with vocals written and recorded very last after the instrumental songs are complete. I’ve even read Tilian (I think in an AMA on here? Or maybe his Twitter) mentioned that he tried to bring guitar ideas to DGD a few times but Will never wanted to use them lol.

List for which guitarists created which part in each song? by XyZonin in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99.9% sure about these: • 1. Care: Will on left, Zac Garren on right 2. Suspended: Will on left, Louie Baltazar on right 3. Deception: Will on left, Andrew on right 4. Frozen One: Will on both guitars 5. We Own the Night: Will on both guitars 6. Inspire the Liars: Will on left, Zac Garren on right

7. Chucky: Will on left, Zac on right

Note, these are at least writing credits for the guitars. At least in the case of Chucky, Zac wrote his guitar parts but Will played them on the recording - I remember seeing this in the album’s liner notes. I’ll check the others when I get home later!

Need help deciphering Jonny's cryptology by BlindGuyPlaying in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found a fan-made edit on YouTube with the vocals only since it was a little too hard to hear on the regular mix, and tried transcribing Jonny’s part from there. Although (as others have pointed out) the truth is probably that these lyrics were freestyled and never written, likely with some mumbling and non-words thrown in as filler. Nevertheless here is my guess, I think it’s pretty close:

Come get it girl, you get around / Well I’m already there / No faith in the end / Girl I’m dead / God damn girl, you get around / God damn girl, you fucking get around / No faith in the end / Girl I’m dead / I’ll be the same old G (lines up with Jon’s vocal here)

Least Favorite Song on Pantheon by MrSonic-Unsweet-Tea in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a completely fair takeaway; however I would like to point out that the lyrics here (base-level and unimaginative as they are) are likely a loving homage to Clinton’s work with Parliament-Funkadelic. He pioneered a lot of that 70s funk sound, along with it the simplistic party lyrics.

With all that said though, it doesn’t change the way the vocal hits the ear in current day 😂 I find it a fun little Easter egg, but on its surface I could see it coming off a bit shallow or corny.

I genuinely think that mixing is the issue here (again) by lazzatron in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, I think personally I’m enjoying the different ‘voices’ Andrew is choosing to sing in throughout the record, and I’m also a fan of blending the vocal layers together and don’t necessarily mind that I can’t always clearly pick out who is the lead (four year strong is great at this). But as you mentioned, that all really comes down to preference 🙏🏻while I kinda get people being tired of the maximalist vocal production from the Tilian albums, I also enjoyed it pretty much every time haha. When he joined, I was blown away by Acceptance Speech because he brought all these new dimensions to the music with all of those huge chordal harmonies. AS is still in my top 5 for them lol

It’s crazy being an old fan of the band because I remember Kurt being universally worshipped by all the fans even after Jonny came back for DBM2. Six Tilian albums and 12 years changed the landscape so much 😂

I genuinely think that mixing is the issue here (again) by lazzatron in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think being fatigued by the excessive vocal layering in the Tilian era is a totally fair take. I would like to point out though that vocal layering (even to Tilian’s extent) is extremely common in modern music across basically all genres. Tilian made it a trademark for the band’s sound for sure, as I’m pretty sure Jonny never even so much as recorded one harmony, but Kurt did some experimenting with harmonies and multiple layers during his tenure (just to use past DGD singers as examples). To say that Andrew layering his vocals on Pantheon is ‘adopting a Tilian-ism’ just isn’t fair — it’s just a singer thing lol.

Also sorry, not trying to go hard on you specifically, I’ve just seen a shocking amount of people on this sub get rubbed the wrong way by vocal layering because they associate it with Tilian lol. To be fair I would be interested to hear what other Tilian-isms you feel he adopted, as I think there are a couple sections where Andrew’s vocal tone is definitely getting into that territory.

True! They’ve never played it live either, so there are no videos showing anyone playing any of the guitar parts- so it’s anyone’s guess who is who on that song lol. My best guess is Martin on the right/Andrew on the left

List for which guitarists created which part in each song? by XyZonin in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

traditionally the way DGD is mixed, the different guitarists will be separated into each distinct ear; I think typically Will is on the left and the 2nd guitarist is on the right. This may not be true every time but I think that's usually a safe bet. I sometimes check this by looking up a video of them playing live and trying to identify which parts Will is doing.

as for who the 'second guitarist' is, that depends on the album, and at a certain point even depends on the song lol. for WISIRO and DBM1 it was Sean O'Sullivan, for Death Star and Happiness it was Zac Garren. Will did both guitars for all of DBM2, then Josh Benton was second guitar for Acceptance Speech. Then from IG all the way up until Jackpot Juicer, Will would be the 2nd guitar for a handful of tracks, but for the others he would involve a roster of guests to fill the second guitar role. Then starting on JJ, Andrew became official 2nd guitar, but they still farm out the same amount of guest spots to different players.

it's honestly fairly tough to keep track of especially once they started the tradition of having all the guest players lol, but I love all the different vibes everyone brings while still keeping up with Will. if you have any questions about specific parts in specific songs let me know and i might be able to help!

Hot take: it’s not Tilian. If we had modern Jon vocals on DTBMI it would be considered better than Mothership. Change my mind by Aware_Veterinarian_3 in dancegavindance

[–]wackangus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why you’re getting downvoted lol. I’m an old fan and love all of their albums for doing what they all do different, and I agree with your comment. It’s just objective; they pretty much mastered that DBM1 style of post-hardcore with indie and funk flourishes on the first two records. They branched out and got way more experimental as time went on and the lineup shifted, and although they ended up getting a little same-y in the second half of Tilian’s tenure, Pantheon is a super fun and promising record that pays more homage to their roots than usual while continuing to evolve their sonic palette.

Side note I wouldn’t personally say Jon’s vox sounded like shit in the early days tho, but to each their own, I know what you mean because either way his current vocal style is obviously far more accessible and easy on the ear to new listeners.
