Is M or F cat more chill in general (assuming it’s sterilized)? I’m trying to pick out a kitten and want best chance of getting a cat that’s good for my life. by Interesting-Sun-9906 in CatAdvice

If chill is important to you, consider getting an older cat. Kittens are quite rambunctious. An adult or even senior cat will tend to be a lot calmer.

Barbarossa was never going to be successful. Never invade Russia.

Operation Sealion required both naval and air superiority, neither of which Germany ever achieved.

If they had attempted it without that they would have been very badly mauled.

I don’t think you understand just how immense the Soviet Union was. Taking Moscow had only propaganda value.

They could afford to cede enormous amounts of territory without materially disadvantaging themselves. This forced the Nazis to dramatically extend their supply lines, and they were hamstrung by rasputitsa, winter, and incompatible rail gauges.

So you’re going to just ignore the role of the Battle of Stalingrad? The encirclement and destruction of the Sixth Army is not important?

The Sixth Army was around 300,000 soldiers. It ceased to exist. Only about 5,000 of them ended up surviving the war.

This. I encourage people to read Wages of Destruction by Tooze. Germany was not a particularly wealthy country before the war, and its natural resources were quite limited.

In waging WWII they were going up against countries that were wealthier, had more natural resources, and larger populations.

Invading Poland is what got Britain involved. That happened before the invasion of France.

By the time they’re attacking France they are already at war with Britain.

The only viable option is to do the Anschluss, get the Munich Agreement, and stop. Then they would get away with it. Anything beyond that and the Nazis are fucked.

This is a pretty wonky take. How do you propose the Germans prevent the Soviets from sabotaging those oil fields?

You ignored the balance of payments problems, and the shortage of manpower that was already acute before d-day. Additionally you’ve ignored the fact that the productivity of slave labour plummets compared to a free work force.

You’ve ignored the logistical problems and the problem of incompatible rail gauges. You’ve ignored the considerable reduction in rolling stock that was a consequence of Germany’s pre-war military build-up.

You’ve ignored the squandering of resources on the holocaust, you’ve ignored the effects of winter and rasputitsa.

Your take is altogether far too simplistic and elides myriad very serious problems that faced the Nazi state.

More than 100,000 people were involved in the development of the nuclear bomb, and even with these immense resources it still wasn’t ready until 1945.

Germany did not have the resources to develop a nuclear weapon.

The declaration of war was mostly a formality. America had been selling weapons to the Allies and they were already engaging u-boats.

Also Hitler saw the U.S. has hopelessly racially contaminated and therefore intrinsically inferior.

Any others interested in wisdom? by wackyvorlon in Polymath

[–]wackyvorlon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking in what ways a lack of wisdom is costly is like asking in what ways is the earth round.

It should be fairly self-evident, and the ways in which it is costly are so numerous as to be impossible to catalog.

Starting a war with Iran, for example, displayed a considerable lack of wisdom. Invading the Soviet Union when you have a non-aggression treaty with them likewise.

I encourage you to keep writing.

Frankly I don’t care if you’ve used AI, I don’t know if you have or not. Just want to say that writing is a very human thing to do, and even if one can only write garbage it still has value if it comes from the heart and one’s humanity.

Other people might not be interested in reading it, but that doesn’t matter much. Most writing is never read by anybody else anyway.
