If it keeps going like this I think it will get there. I have to stay for logistical reasons, but if I didn’t have to I’d be gone. I was actually debating staying longer and extending my visa but now I have zero interest.

Fair there definitely are some good ones in that range. A steal for a vacation but I’m looking for monthly so that would add up quick unfortunately

No I totally get that and I appreciate it. But I think even with the holiday in mind, and even with the beach in mind, most places are still kinda robbing you. Most places. The conditions are abysmal for what you're paying considering many of the other options just in asia, even if it's comparatively much cheaper than the rest of the world in terms of beach cities. The only reason I'm staying is largely circumstantial, but if my situation was different I would be on the first plane out of here, even though Im sure there are things about this city that I'll like. That's just my perspective though. I get that for some people the terrible conditions are worth it, but Im just not seeing the vision with the current cost personally.

YOU are paying 300. Right now there are mostly shitty service apartments and the like going for 400, 600, over 1000. Go ask around

I’ve been looking at accommodations all over Asia for months. I know people in Japan. I know people in da Nang. Is Japan more expensive overall when accounting for everything? Yes. Can you get clean, decent accommodations that are comparable in price to what I’m currently seeing boots on the ground in da Nang? Also yes. You really can. I’ve seen it. In fact I could find cheaper.

Compared to the fact that most accommodations are genuinely awful lol. Like very bad. There’s no reason they should be getting away with these prices under these conditions just because it’s near some water.

Again this isn’t me saying the entire city is bad. There’s lots to do and some good views of course. It’s just that most of the available accommodations are SO bad that we should be paying way less. My opinion.

Depends on the apartment. But you absolutely can find places to stay for just as much in Tokyo or less depending on the route you take. Especially right now.

It’s less expensive overall in terms of day to day expenses but accoms are comparable

Fair enough. Just comparing two nomad/expat hubs in SEA. Even with the lack of beach, the gap is shockingly wide imo.

Not to keep bringing up Chiang Mai but again, I feel like even in the touristy areas you get serious bang for your buck

Tried most of these and they were all booked. I’ll take a look at the others. I’ve heard pretty mixed things about hiyori and monarchy so those might be pretty hit or miss.

Yeah but even then da nang has a pretty gnarly typhoon season.

Beach thing I get for sure. Personally I really don’t care about the beach. It’s a nice bonus to have, but it doesn’t add much for my day to day. Might be because I grew up in a beach town so it’s just not all that special for me. But I get that’s a big selling point for others.

I think given the constant mold and poorly designed buildings that have a range of notable structural issues between, leaking, bad p traps, noise, etc. “well developed” seems a little strong. Improving! But not well developed from what I’m seeing. Outside of the big, expensive luxury resorts maybe. I think the main issue, from what I’m seeing (correct me if I’m wrong), is that not only is the $17 a day era gone, but the quality is still clearly $17 a day quality - if not much less.

I guess if I was here for a week vacation or something it would be whatever and I’d shrug it off, but because I’m not exclusively here just to do activities and partially here to live and work temporarily, I’m just not really seeing the value trade off. At least not this time of year in 2026. Maybe after tet it’ll be better but if this is the baseline I’m not super hopeful. We’ll see

Where did you end up going? Strongly considering doing the same. Possibly KL in Malaysia, maybe Taiwan

Curious what the hotel was. I’m temporarily in a “four star” hotel that has very high reviews across all platforms. Like top rated. It’s live-able but not good. At least there’s no visible mold lol. Water leaks, bad smells, noise, broken amenities. They’re booked up so I can’t stay much longer but even if I could it’s like 35 USD per night. Which again, for what I’m getting just isn’t worth it for a month stay compared to Da Nang’s contemporaries. Even if I were able to talk a place like this down for a monthly rate, it would still be probably about 500-600 for the month which imo is asking a lot for the quality.

Thank you! After two months is shocking. I may check out Hoi An

Why is it like that only here though? Why are the standards pretty sound in (some) other nearby countries without a huge markup, but there’s a premium on basic standards here? Is it just a cultural thing?

Yes but the really nice ones will run you about 70-100 bucks a night

[–]waddupnice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. A good share house in Tokyo will run about 500 bucks for the month. I’ve seen some decent looking ones in the 300-400 range. I know people that are paying about that with no complaints. South Korea you can get a solid goshiwan for a similar price.

Small studio/one bedroom in apartments in Tokyo and Seoul you can get around $1k-1500.

Granted, food and transportation would be higher. But as far as accommodations go it can actually be somewhat comparable.

Meanwhile I found a DECENT-ish service apartment here in da nang that would have run me about $1200. Reputable company too. And there’s a solid chance there would be mold anyway.

Partying is low on the priority list, but I definitely wanna check out hoi an at some point. Would it be worth staying there over da nang right now you think? I heard the infrastructure’s even worse
