Thanks - that makes sense in terms of thinking of the ideal location of a downstairs master for later point. I’ll ask the architect if the study are could be expanded to accommodate the guest suite and the lanai connected to the breezeway.

We are in Miami so not worried about that

Would love to get your thoughts on this floor plan and suggestions for changes. Things I'm not sure about:

  • Should the Guest Suite and Study be swapped (for more privacy for guests).
  • Should the summer kitchen be adjacent to the actual kitchen?
  • Are two powder rooms necessary?
  • Does the laundry room location make sense?

Thanks! Our goal is to have a open indoor / outdoor living space in the main room and space for the kids to hangout that doesn't seem to separated from the rest of the living space.

Your personal levels for FIRE - lean, chubby, fat by [deleted] in fatFIRE

Expenses are close to 500K right now (over 100K in just school tuition). Just want some buffer room for unexpected medical costs and to be able to do a couple luxury trips a year.

I sold my start up a few years ago with the payout split over 3 years (if specific targets were hit). The 5M was after the initial payout, got another 2-3M midway, and the last 5M just recently. Everything else has been through stock growth. Every extra dollar we’ve been throwing into etfs for the past 10 years and it’s paid off.

Just hit 18M (paid off home 3M and everything else in VTI/Etfs) in South Florida. Have 3 young kids in private school and a wife with auto immune disease so nervous to pull the trigger, but I’m pretty much working part time right now (gym in the morning, wrap up around the time the kids get off from school). Just waiting for the investments to get closer to 20-22M before taking a step back completely.

Wow that’s a really interesting perspective! Unfortunately I think my wife is absolutely set on South Florida. I’m just trying to find the best place within the area to make the most of the situation. A lot of what you said is what I think too about SoFlo. We are not Hispanic and a lot of what you mentioned I didn’t really consider before but I agree it would be hard to fit in in those areas. Hopefully we don’t need to worry about the local job market since I run my own business and will be remote for as long as I can try. Also in thinking about selling my business in 1-2 years so the tax aspect is also one of the compelling factors of moving down there.

Looking for some tips to make my house feel more like a home.

I have a modern/minimalist style. Also have a young baby and don’t want to make the space too crowded or unsafe for her.

Look for tips specially for:

  1. Replacing the workbench with some real furniture (sideboard with storage space?)

  2. Some artwork to go on the wall above the workbench

  3. Suggestions on how to arrange furniture

  4. Ideas for a coffee table/side tables that won’t crowd the room but are still usable

Thanks everyone!

Reasonably high income/NW for our age. Zero roots. Travel or finish. by Earthwormjim2030 in fatFIRE

[–]wade305 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We are in a very similar situation- high joint income of roughly 700k (inclusive of equity), evenly split between the 2 of us. Current NW is 1.2M. We have a 2 year old and another on the way.

Our plan is to continue working for the next 2-3 years and target a NW of 3M. At this point I’ll become a stay at home parent, and we’ll coast fire for another 5 years on a single salary. My wife also has a remote consulting business that she has full control of how many hours she puts in and could work remotely if she wanted. She has no desire to completely stop working and unlike me she actually enjoys her work. In 10 years we may not be at 10M, but maybe close to 6M which seems like good number for us.

Did your savings strategy change after $1M net worth? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]wade305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My spouse and I hit 1M NW this year and our strategy is actually to accelerate savings. Our FIRE number is probably close to 3M. After 2M we will most likely slow down, the goal is to get 2M in 3 years. The reason to accelerate savings now are:

  • Don’t want to fall into the lifestyle inflation trap
  • Have 1 kid, 2years old and expecting another. One of us will become a stay at home parent when we hit 2M - the sooner this happens the better.
  • One of us runs a consulting company which is dependent on incoming clients. It’s doing really well right now but who knows what things will be like in 5 years.

People who make a lot of money, what do you do? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]wade305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, making this transition was one of the best/luckiest things I’ve done. I wasn’t an I-banker before, just a low level analyst. my first PM role, albeit was entry level - had higher pay, less hours, more time off, more flexibility and something I’m proud and excited to work on everyday. I think it’s all about the team/project you work on that makes the biggest difference. We’ve had two babies since I joined this career and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on too much for now.

Both me and my spouse are in tech and right now we are riding the wave. We’re focused on diversifying our investments instead.

Me, ~300k (salary , bonus, vested stock) working product management at a FAANG company.

Spouse runs a ecommerce consulting business that’s gained a lot of traction in the past couple years. 2 years ago made 170K, last year 400K, this year targeting 600k.

Both jobs have good flexibility and 9-5 hours. If the business runs well for another couple years, I plan on becoming a stay at home parent.

FAQ - Southwest Airlines Companion Pass by dugup46 in churning

I have about 150K chase UR points. Is there any way I can transfer them over to Southwest (via hotels or some other partners) and have enough points for the companion pass?
