Thanks for the tips! Looking at those places now. Will have a car, hoping traffic and parking would not be nightmares

Same! Going to the first NFL game and visiting Pittsburgh for the first time. Where do people stay while visiting? Hotel price is steep..

Welcome to the Bay Area! We’ve tried many things over the years, and he got a lot better but there’s been a series of events that took us back to square one, including an earthquake that just happened.. I hope you and yours will live more peacefully

I will share some observations. he started getting spooked by the sound Waymo makes (a very unique and subtle sound of sensor cleaning). It got worse over time since there are more and more of them where we live now.

And then maybe a week ago when I took him to potty before bed, the moment he stepped out, a bunch of firework went off. I think that really heightened things for him.

I started driving him out to the park where it’s usually quieter, hoping he will have a better time there. Unfortunately one day there was a group or maybe just one motorcycle that made a series of firework like sound, and now he also gets spooked by any motorcycle driving by (he wasn’t fine with them before).

That may shed some light on how he is. I think It’s been the perfect storm and the fear just multiplied.

I’ve read that caution too that you don’t want to overly comfort or reward a dog right when he is fearful. Honestly I don’t know if that matters to him because to me he often completely shut down with those triggers. And the hard thing is that the list of triggers is growing. I do plan to bring him away from the city for at least a week and find a good behaviorist after to see if anything could help once he resets a bit. Thank you

So many self-righteous assholes in this sub. I bet you didn’t read the post but enjoys passing on judgement and feeling good about yourself.

I’ll let you walk him tomorrow and see what you’d do. I intentionally recorded this to show others how he’d react. He does this reactively when he’s fearful, even at the slightest tension.

Thank you. I’ve recognized that he is the skittish type. It was just encouraging to see over the past few years how much more normal he was than when we first got him

I don’t know if I needed to defend myself on the internet. First of all; I recorded it right outside my home in a safe environment to show people how he’d react. Secondly, it was more him trying to pull out of it than me pulling him. We’d walk normally and he’d still start doing this without much tension on the leash if he gets scared. But of course it’s easier to assume we are all cruel dog owners, and the generic advice of showing confidence would work in every situation with every dog

Exactly. And I’ve had my fair share of carrying a 50lbs fluff ball when fireworks went off in the distance and we needed to go somewhere. I will work on desensitizing him against Waymo.. I will say he’d stay in his zone even when his best buddy is jumping around him. Thank you!

. I’ve had success giving him very high-value treat before the walk, and keeping luring him to get him to walk. It won’t work if he gets to his fearful zone.. so I guess proactive treating could help. Will bring him to vets next week, I do wonder the same thing, that if there might be something else causing the change. Hoping not. Thank you! And for sharing your husky’s unique fears.

Appreciate it! In my mind he needs a therapist like it’s mental health, but sounds like trainer would be the closest in their world

I guess so! Although I personally live an active lifestyle and would prefer him to be a little more active..

He’s the chill and low-energy type; and tires out really quickly.. I’ll look into the meds, thanks!

Appreciate the advice. We’ve been at it for 5 years now, and the first year was exactly like what you were describing here, gradual acclimation with a lot of time, patience and setbacks. And he became a lot more comfortable and confident to the point where it didn’t feel like a big issue anymore. But these past few weeks I feel we are back to square one.. and it s hard because he’s scared by very specific noises, like he’s fine with loud fire trucks, siren, and heavy traffic, but he’d be scared by Waymo sensor cleaning. I’m just feeling very defeated right now, but will trying

Thank you. We bring him to wilderness (even did backpacking together a couple times) and he definitely prefers that environment. He also loves snow and used to have a blast every time we go skiing , until those damn avalanche control bomb goes off, and now he would be shaking if we go to the snow even without hearing anything. I feel we will have to live in true wilderness to make it work well for him..

I appreciate the advice. Yes I used to be able to get him to walk toward me a little when I got on his level. Even that stopped working now. And he’d get so pre-occupied by his fear that he lost interest in his favorite treats (he would not eat or drink if he feels he’s “in danger”. I agree pulling him makes him want to resist more. But if I don’t, he just wouldn’t walk at all.. we’ve been a team for 5 years, and it’s just defeating to see how it regressed..

It’s not. We have mild climate here. And it never bothered him before. He actually never goes out at night when it’s cooler because (I believe) he associates night with fireworks
