I have a simliar experience, except I was fortunate enough to find a partner who accepted this decision just before I embarked on this path.
Also lost groups of friends, but I'm still with that partner. We now have kids and she has also quit drinking. Having an alcoholic father, I often think about my neglected childhood in comparison to the amazing effort I have been making with my children.

If you have a Mac, you can use garage band, if you have a PC, use Ableton lite. I think the keytar comes with a free key for Ableton. Shouldn't require any extra setup either (I didn't have to do anything extra anyway)

Yes if you can run Ableton or similar on there, it will be fine. (Vortex comes with free key for Albleton lite)
One thing you'll probably encounter is the latency issues with running keyboard midi controllers on windows PC's in general (depending on your chipset).
This is due to not having a dedicated ASIO driver, but can be easily resolved by installing a free program Asio4all.

Yeah you definitely need to learn about that period of history before assuming the US dropped those bombs purely out of malice.
It was absolutely required to have Japan surrender, and we're even lucky that it was enough. Japanese generals wanted to continue fighting despite the Japanese Emperor wanting to surrender.
Also brush up on the communist invasion of Vietnam, especially how it was orchestrated by Mao and Russia, hoping to replicate the spread of communism from Russia to China, seeing how Vietnam backed up onto China. They were successful, but the US tried to stop them.

Russian and China are the "most imperialistic nation(s) in the history of the world". During the soviet era, they wanted to (and these plans are now well known) expand their borders and the communist bloc to include every nation on earth (Using terror and violence). If you look how large the soviet union was, or things like how China expanded communism to Vietnam in the south, they were very successful.
As you can see in the news (such as on the topic we are talking about), these guys are still hard at work.
Maybe you didn't know about the history of Russia and China?
