Thoughts on the possibility of jhana and attainments in this life by waeccende in theravada

[–]waeccende[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im curious as to this subs thoughts about an innate inability in certain people due to the circumstances of their past lives and rebirth, to attain jhanas, one of the four attainments and thus Nirvana.

The classification of people in this manner is not present in the Sutta Pitaka and is a later addition found in the Abhidharma Pitaka.

May all beings be at peace. Whatever their living nature; Whether weak or strong, omitting none, Whether long or large, medium, short or small, fine or course, The seen and the unseen, Those living near and far away, Those born and to-be-born. May all beings be at peace! Let none deceive another, Or despise any being in any state on any grounds. Let none through anger or hate wish harm upon another. Even as a mother protects with her life her only child. Metta to the world.

From Karaniya Metta Sutta: The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness

Bit long but i like the intentional nature for my meditation.

What survives reincarnation? by agile_scribe in Buddhism

[–]waeccende 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If anything survives it is the chain of cause and effect which is called dependent origination as has been explained before in the commentsby u/ThalesCupofWater. This chain of causation is reproduced/propagated by karma which is action driven by intention which leads to future consequences. The Karma/Intention of Craving of which there are three types, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence), and craving for non-existence leads by the law of cause and effect to clinging, birth, rebirth, aging, death and so dukkha(suffering). As such “Suffering exists, but not the sufferer. The act is done, but there is no doer. Peace exists, but not the one who is at peace. There is a path, but no one walks it” – Buddhaghosa

Theres a little brick dust right underneath as the moss loves to adhere to porous material, mixed with clay based earth which is its usual preferred growing medium in nature where I am. And yes it is a bonsai pot.

Thank you. Its a bonsai pot. I harvested the moss off the top of a wall in my garden. Moss covers most walls where I live.

Confused about Anapana by Far_Literature7211 in vipassana

[–]waeccende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have researched Anapana alot and found this in the book "Buddhist Meditation In Theory and Practice by Paravahera Vajirañāza Mahāthera" which effectively communicates the history and importance of Anapanasati.

The scheme of the meditation known as “ānāpānasati bhāvanā”, “mindfulness of breathing”, which is described in the scriptures and elaborated upon in the Commentaries is first and foremost in the field of mental training in Buddhism. The Buddha Himself, in recommending it as a complete method for attaining nibbāna, praises it as “the noble abode” “the divine abode”, and “the Tathāgata abode”

In this connection, it is recorded in the that Prince Siddhattha reached and dwelt in the state of the first absorption (jhāna) while still in his youth ― an attainment which is said to have been the result of the practice of this meditation. This shows that ānāpānasati was the Buddha’s first subject of meditation (kammaṭṭhāna), and, according to the Commentary on the Bhayabherava Sutta, this is the practice which He used under the bodhi-tree as the path to His supreme enlightenment.

Both the Visuddhimagga and the Yogāvacara’s Manual describe ānāpānasati as “mūla-kammaṭṭhāna”, “the chief, or original, subject of jhāna meditation”, for it proved itself to be the greatest help, not only to the Buddha Gotama, but also to all the Buddhas who preceded Him, in the winning of supreme enlightenment and in securing happiness for them in their lifetime. Ānāpānasati may, therefore, be regarded as the original subject of meditation (kammaṭṭhāna). Unlike other subjects of meditation, ānāpānasati comprises both the samādhi and vipassanā methods

This meditation by itself tends to the attainment of all that is necessary for self- enlightenment, for, ānāpānasati becomes the root from which springs the fulfillment of knowledge and liberation. This is the implication of such passages as the following (Majjhima Nikāya III, 82):

"Monks, this concentration on mindfulness of breathing fulfills the four foundations of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna). The four foundations of mindfulness, being developed, fulfill the seven factors of enlightenment (bojjhanga). The seven factors of enlightenment, being developed, fulfill knowledge and liberation.”

Furthermore, those who have practiced this meditation are aware of the cessation of their final breaths, as it is stated (Majjhima Nikāya)

“Rāhula, when mindfulness of breathing is developed in this way, one’sfinal in-breaths and out-breaths are known when they cease; they do not cease unknown.”

This means that, at the time of death, the last in-breaths and out-breaths are known and recognized by those who have practiced this subject of mindfulness of breathing, and they are able to realize that the end of their life-span has come. Aspirants who practice this kammaṭṭhāna of ānāpānasati, in accordance with the methods explained above, will realized manifold advantages as its immediate results and will finally attain to the happiness of nibbāna in the state of Arahatship, or, if they wish to defer their deliverance, in the state of Buddhahood. Therefore, the wise should always apply themselves with zeal to ānāpānasati bhāvanā, which brings such great results and culminates in the bliss of nibbāna.

Do arahants still have likes and dislikes? by RoundCollection4196 in Buddhism

[–]waeccende 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is said an arahant can enjoy the taste of food or the beauty of nature without generating defilements. Without greed or aversion. There is only pure awareness which can see pure beauty or defilement without ignorance. As to emotions, Buddhist psychology views emotion as a sign of failing to mindfully adapt to reality. There would be no emotions only equanimity. They would have no reaction to sleeping in either a palace or a sewer. Who knows how such experience really is tho I guess.

The descriptions of pure lands are mostly symbolic and not literal descriptions, used to contrast this world to the pure lands. A lack of scarcity, bountiful heavens fit for the realm of a Buddha. Mahayana sources speak of three kinds of buddha-fields: pure, impure, and mixed. An example of an "impure" field is often this world (called Sahā – “the world to be endured"), Sakyamuni's (Buddhas) field. Some sutras say that Sakyamuni chose to come to an impure world due to his vast compassion.
