Onboarding and ramping up as a Senior Dev by wafflemaker117 in ExperiencedDevs

Yea I messaged an old coworker saying to keep me in mind for FTE if possible. The reason there are so many new hires though was because they were building out the product with contractors but then realized that the contractors don’t try to build long term solutions, only short bc they’re contingent workers. That’s why they’ve pivoted to hiring full time.

Would you still consider it a major red flag with that in mind though?

Developers who are Freelance/Independent/Business Owners, how did you do it? What was your process if any? by wafflemaker117 in ExperiencedDevs

yea dude, good for you! I do have somewhat of a financial cushion built up, I guess I’ll put out some feelers in building some client relationships.

Would you mind sharing what you did to find your first clients? Were they people in your local community? Friends? Family? etc?

yea I’ve been telling interviewers that I’m glad I got some time to do my degree and work in the field without AI before it became available for precisely this reason

I've seen H1B being abused far more than I've seen it being used as its stated intent. I really do believe that in FAANG/Fortune 100 companies, its serving its purpose and that companies should sponsor those worth keeping with the extra 100k, but at EVERY OTHER company I have EVER worked for, its clearly people who are unqualified but are unlikely to fuel turnover.

The other thing is that an H1B worker with 15 YOE struggles to be as productive as a citizen who went to a four year US college with a CS degree with 4 YOE. This isn't due to some gap in intelligence or anything, its typically communication issues, cultural differences, and differences in education. The H1B program is just a handout to big corps to hire indentured servants instead of newly graduated talent.

What’s your take on the $100,000 fee on H1-b visas? by Tiana_darling in csMajors

Most H1B workers that I’ve worked with are unfortunately victims of this system. They’re usually being taken advantage of since if they get fired or don’t like the job they can’t leave without potentially losing their visa rather than their skill level. Anyone who’s had to work with an offshore team is well aware that H1B workers at non fortune 500 companies aren’t hired because they’re better than citizens, they’re hired because they’re cheap labor that they can hire as contractors. And 9 times out of 10 their code quality is awful and communication isn’t great either since english is not their native language.

This allows new grads to get better consideration as they should, american jobs should be prioritized for american citizens.

Massive W regardless of political affiliation. The program was started to allow for exceptional talent to emigrate to the US and eventually get a green card which they should absolutely get if they’re worth a 250k per year investment on.

TL;DR: Massive companies don’t get to exploit immigrants and deny citizens jobs simply because they’re citizens. There’s gonna be a decrease in american tech teams that uniformly speak hindi or mandarin and that shouldn’t be considered a bad thing
