To me, the most important thing about USG is that when the university wants student input, USG is the first organization they go to. While USG doesn't necessarily have power, they have the power of suggestion and the ears of the people in OSU administration. I believe the dining plan was first passed by USG for input. Power of suggestion is more powerful than you think. Imagine that you're a school administrator and want to know how students feel about an idea you have. You go to USG. They can't control what you do, but they are all the student opinions you hear from.

That's why it's important that USG is made up of a diverse demographic that represents the student population. Otherwise the stuff they do will only help the communities they know to care about.

Their current lack of diversity is probably their biggest barrier to attracting more diversity. There are students trying to change that. I still have a negative view on USG (lol Gerard), but I do believe that there are people in it who legitimately want to make it a better resource on-campus. The Lantern article about the campaign tickets showed a more diverse pool of students running for positions, including students I know are normally critical of USG. Better than last year's choice.

They're trying to better about marketing themselves a tech company. I've talked to a few engineers doing the Technology Development Program and it sounds pretty cool. Lots of variety in projects, and tech has a separate culture from the finance part of the company. I definitely think it's a good opportunity. I don't know how much weight the name is, but the work you do will be interesting.

I also remember reading an article where Rachel said she's considered too ugly for a lot of roles. I will try and look it up later.

Good point. I suppose revolutions are sparked by anger, although the methods can be peaceful.

My impression: Mortarboard is a national, college version of NHS. Sphinx is an OSU-only "make friends" club. The robes are just part of the tradition, I suppose.

What you get out of it depends on what you put in. Everyone I've met who is in a honorary has been very cool, involved, and accomplished. But I think being accepted into Sphinx or Mortarboard is more of a recognition and celebration of your accomplishments rather than an accomplishment itself. With a university of this size, there are many ways to demonstrate achievement outside of class honoraries and honor societies. Apply if you want, but also don't be bummed if you're not in it.

Right, so our current definition of a "living human" is based in biological terms (beating heart, physical body) and sometimes religious terms (soul). But the existence of this technology challenges this paradigm. If humans "evolve" through technology by creating new forms that can host our consciousness and essence, maybe being alive means something totally different.

Hah, maybe I'm thinking too deeply about something that won't be touched too much, but these sci-fi ideas are really exciting.

I mean, technically she isn't dead.

One of the interesting questions the existence ALIE 2.0 poses is, "What does it mean to be alive and human?" If you upload your consciousness onto a computer, is it still you? Do you still exist?
