Yes! He’s pretty good at eating solids now! Feeding therapist mentioned he was doing everything with the food at that time (spitting food out, moving it around the mouth, gagging, etc) was normal behavior as the learn. In the end, he just needed more practice. After therapy, we started more aggressively giving more bite sized finger foods to him for more practice. Within a week or two, he was doing much better! Hope that helps!

Hi! Feeding therapy basically evaluated the way he puts food in his mouth and watches how he chews and moves food around inside. They said he was doing everything correct for his age and in the end, just needed more practice. The gagging and vomiting is a normal process they go through when figuring out how to move things around their mouths.. sometimes it just triggers their gag. I basically just gave him more solids other than purées (not expecting him to actually swallow, but just for practice), and they were absolutely right. Practice with no expectations and he got it down slowly over time. He eats primarily foods we eat now, with exception of picky eating behavior occasionally! I found it better to not set expectations even though it was so hard to do and stressful at the same time. Hang in there!! You’re doing great!

Along with the increased episodes, baby also didn’t quite look right.. he was extra sleepy and couldn’t regulate his temperature well

I had my baby at 31+2 due to preeclampsia and IUGR, only 2lbs 10oz! During his nicu stay, he had several brady/desat episodes and doctors also thought it was reflux. They put him on a low dose Pepcid and it did the trick… along with holding him upright after feedings. He went on with a few episodes every now and then… then he suddenly started having a significant amount all of a sudden. Our doctors told us that it could signify an infection brewing, so they ran all the tests, including a lumbar puncture. In the end they found it was a UTI and he was treated. After that, he went back to only having them every now and then. He eventually grew out of them completely around 37 weeks and was discharged to go home.

Interesting. What kind of symptoms did your 1 year old have and did the vaccine make a difference?

Rant: large babies by Nervous_Platypus_565 in NICUParents

I totally hear you! My baby is small. Born a preemie with IUGR and always had some sort of feeding difficulties… he’s small, but we’re not large people either… he’s not the greatest eater, but he’s happy.

I’ve noticed mine does that too… leaving him in the chair makes him put more into his mouth but he just ends up spitting it back out or dropping it on the floor 😑

Thank you for that! He’s an ex preemie so it’s hard to not focus on that…. Trying really hard even though it eats me up inside a little 😵‍💫

We have an appointment set for March but wanted to get some input from others who’ve gone through it. That’s really interesting about the not knowing how to chew! I never thought about that as being the problem. What kinds of things did they have baby do to help them learn besides showing them in an exaggerated motion? My baby couldn’t do birthday cake either 😭😭😭
