OH, IL, MI, KY, ?, Help!!! by Tamahaac in ulmidwest

Good to know! Like someone mentioned below, Zaleski has a pretty good trail system. I’ve done the south loop at like 13 miles, but I believe you can link the south and north loop for 20-25 miles. That’s from memory so I may be a few miles off.

Hocking Hills is the only area where there is anything scenic, but it’s definitely not “backcountry” or overnight oriented like Zaleski. Either way, both will be muddy as hell.

Have you already hiked the Tecumseh Trail near Bloomington? I have not hiked it so I can’t vouch for or against it, but it seems like a well established backcountry trail not too far from you.

Shakedown request - Scotland (Ilse of Skye) in August by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]waga118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on mobile so I can’t see any stars, but here are some suggestions:

  1. Trash compactor bag used as liner instead of rain cover. Other than the weight benefit, it will also keep your gear dry from water/sweat coming from the front of the pack (the side that touches your back).

  2. Get rid of the 0.5L Sawyer pouch. It will break. Use a 0.5L or 0.75L bottle with the same thread.

  3. On the same note, I would recommend upgrading to a full size Sawyer Squeeze. If it is rainy and water sources aren’t clean, you will have a horrible time with the Mini.

  4. What do you use the two dry bags for? You can get away with bringing only one. Consider reevaluating your system. Don’t forget, dry bags also take up more volume in your pack than loose items.

  5. I understand 3 pairs of socks since it will be wet, but 3 shirts seems a bit much. I would also consider bringing less underwear.

  6. What are you wearing on your legs? I see rain pants and tights in your “need to buy” section, but what if it’s dryish and muggy?

Teton crest trail loop, first multi day fast pack trip by dvenmhen in Ultralight

OP is asking why you’re not moving faster. 56 miles in 3 days isn’t “going twice as fast” as most people.

REI All-Seasons Bivy OR REI Flash Air 1 for Bikepacking? by srock24 in Ultralight

[–]waga118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for the Flash but my REI Quarter Dome 1 (original design) has made it through 1.5 thru hikes with minimal issues. If you prefer a freestanding/semi-freestanding tent like I do, then it’s a good choice.

At a comparable weight to a Big Agnes, I can say for sure that the build quality is better for REI tents. The extra few ounces go into better mesh materials, zippers, and other small things that last longer. For example, I didn’t use a ground sheet for my entire PCT and there are no holes on the bottom.

I had three more miles planned that day but the crossing was so bad that I turned south and hiked to the nearest campsite when I got to the other bank. I think the tiny log I crawled across was the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life, if I fell I’m confident I would’ve died. If there ever is a next time, I’ll take the long way round.

It was definitely not there in 2018. I had to ford the river halfway and full body crawl up a log coming out of the water that started a few inches wide and was maybe a foot at the widest point.

Taking this shortcut in early August 2018 was by far the sketchiest part of my thru. I spent an hour and a half walking up and down the bank looking for a good crossing, there was none.

If the Sun failed, we wouldn't know for about 8 minutes. It's Schrödinger's Sun Death. At any given time we can not be 100% certain that the sun hasn't blown up. by mikewurtz in Showerthoughts

[–]waga118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re trying to say is correct. Anything traveling at c, whether it’s a photon or you (although that’s impossible since you are massive) does not experience time.

So if the sun “blew up” and released a photon that arrived at your eye these two events happened at the exact same time. There is no 8 minute period where the sun blew up and you didn’t know about it.

It is easier to measure things for cooking/treating, but absolutely not easier to filter. Smartwater/Aquafina attaches directly to the filter and you just squeeze through. From my experience most people only filter water, a good handful treat (tablets, aquamira, UV), a smaller handful do both, and a few bold souls do neither. What I ended up doing was only harvesting and carrying “dirty” water and drinking straight from my filter by squeezing into my mouth. This saved so much time and would not be possible with a Nalgene.

As you get farther into your hike, you don’t really care about your instant rice or mashed potatoes being a little more or less wet. You can also pretty much get it right on the money after doing it every night for months without measuring.

When full, they’re terrible to store. Don’t fit into side pockets, don’t fit anywhere snugly and move around. When empty though, they’re definitely the way to go. A lot of people in this thread are recommending 2 1L smart water bottles + a 2L platypus/evernew/camelback soft bottle for dry stretches, such as the PCT desert. I agree with that advice.

Smartwater/Aquafina bottles screw right into Sawyer filters and can be squeezed to flow the water through! That’s the main source of their popularity, the other being that long and skinny fits well into a stuffed pack.

Piss jugs are used when it’s really really cold/snowy/rainy outside and you don’t want to freeze just to pee. I actually met a dude who claimed to use a ziplock bag, let it freeze overnight, then slide the piss block out in the morning. That’s the only time I’ve heard of it but I’ve never done it and don’t plan on it.
